This monograph about René Lévesque is part of a Penguin series called Extraordinary Canadians. The only surprise, and it is momentary, is to find Lévesque included in this list, but he was a Canadian, and he was extraordinary.René Lévesque, who with a small group of followers founded the Parti Québecois (PQ) in the late 1960s and led it to great heights, was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. This is interesting since New Brunswick has a high Francophone population and is to this day the only province in Canada that has two official languages, English and French. René grew up in the province of Québec, in a town settled by United Empire Loyalists called New Carlisle in the Gaspe Peninsula. As fate would have it, during much of his childhood he had to attend school in English, and this meant that the leader of a separatist party actually spoke much better English than many mainstream Québec politicians such as the Liberals. After the death in September, 1959 of longtime premier and strong man, Maurice Duplessis, who had wielded patriarchal power under the Union Nationale banner (a right-wing party established in 1935), the provincial Liberals, to which Lévesque had first belonged, became the party to beat. Lévesque's new party, which rather than advocating outright secession espoused a sovereignty association, did not become a force overnight, but they made steady inroads and were finally elected in 1976.This was quite a feat after the revolutionary Québec Liberation Front (FLQ) had inflicted violence and tragedy on prominent people as well as innocent bystanders. In the name of separatism, the FLQ kidnapped James Cross, British trade commissioner in Montreal, who was eventually released, and then the FLQ kidnapped Quebec Liberal Cabinet minister Pierre Laporte, who was not so lucky and died while in their hands. The year before,in 1969, the FLQ bombed the Montreal Stock Exchange, killing a couple of people, and inflicted other apparently random deeds in the name of their somewhat unfocused goals. The FLQ had seen the success (after a long hard struggle) of the Algerians in achieving independence from France, and they chose to go down a similar road. The leader of the PQ, himself a former Liberal Cabinet minister under Jean Lesage, who always felt he was a democrat first and foremost was bent on reform and not revolution. When his party was elected, Lévesque would provide a check on the more extreme elements of his party. And, in the beginning, the party was squeaky clean and became the model for fiscal accountability (especially in regard to electoral donations) as well as the public acquisition of Hydro Québec, the electric company, which turned out to be a great investment for the Québec taxpayer. In their enthusiasm to take over all the resources, the PQ were less fortunate with their stubborn acquisition of the asbestos industry. They had failed to see the writing on the wall about this soon-to-be banned product. But they paved the way for free public education up to and including high school (previously mainly only the English, who had their own school boards, had sent their children to the higher levels). Duplessis's regime had left education of the Catholic children (read French) up to the church, and the church was not swift to reform some of the feudal aspects of Québec society. So when the PQ said they stood for good government, it was easy to believe, since most of their reforms, although costly, were welcome and overdue. But they had run on a mandate to hold a referendum on independence. They wrestled long and hard with the phrasing of the loaded question: did Quebecers want to separate from Canada (in a sovereignty association) or did they want to keep the status quo? The PQ were victims of their own success. The nervous electorate voted no. Things were better. They were definitely well on the way to becoming what they called maîtres chez nous (masters of our own house). Many Québecers, although horrified with the FLQ's excesses, sympathized with their goal of independence. It had been a terrifying time for all Canadians, but especially Québec, and at the behest of the then-Liberal provincial government for federal help, Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act, a severe action that is still controversial. The rest of the book follows the gradual decline of Lévesque and his particular PQ government. Under Lévesque, the government had listened to immigrants, such as the Italians, who wanted their children educated in English. Now a new law, Bill 101, would impose what many English felt were draconian measures: new immigrants whose first language was not English would be educated in French. Signs in public places must be in French. There had been a huge exodus of English-speaking people and their money, starting a decade before. Stunned Anglophones would say, "We defeated them, after all." They referred to a closely contested battle 200 years before in Québec in which both the French and English leaders were mortally wounded. This battlefield victory was not going to erase what became known as "the French fact." The French had been in North America since the 1600s. But now the English-speaking Quebecers were getting a taste of their own medicine, whether deserved or not, and many were leaving. To maintain their gains, to keep Québec French, the government felt it had to make French education mandatory for foreign newcomers.Contextually, Québec was doing what many parts of the world were doing. Call it self actualization. In the United States, an unpopular war led to the rise of the hippie movement, and young men were urging one another to burn their draft cards and to live for the cause of peace. In France there was a violent student riot. People everywhere were questioning the old ways.Lévesque had resigned his party leadership in a huff, after a dispute with Pierre Trudeau about repatriating the constitution from Britain (purists said it is "patriating," since there was neither a constitution here nor in Britain in the first place). The departing head of the PQ began acting very childishly. He reverted to very public skirt-chasing, and sulking--not a happy denouement for his career, nor for his second marriage to a beautiful woman 20 years his junior. But he wrote his memoirs and achieved a degree of peace himself. He had never liked the provincial capital, Québec City, and he and his wife settled in Montreal, more or less contentedly. He bought a condo. Home ownership for the average Québecer had been another goal of the PQ, and Lévesque had heretofore been a renter.Author Daniel Poliquin, himself a journalist of note, has written a gripping summary, all too brief, of this magnificent politician, but as Poliquin states, there are many other sources from which to read and learn about Lévesque. While brief, the text is not dry. Lévesque possessed tons of that overworked word, charisma. He was a bit of a slob--well, let us say, not a good dresser. He was a chain smoker, and Poliquin says a statue of him in his home town depicts him with his ubiquitous cigarette. (He had shocked onlookers by smoking during a private audience with the Pope.) Of course he liked adulation, but he was unimpressed by many if not most of the usual trappings of office. When Lévesque died of a heart attack in the late 1980s, then-prime minister Brian Mulroney decreed flags would fly across the nation at half mast. Whatever else the PQ leader had been, he had achieved, and earned, respect.

Let me say the artwork is good. The illustrators certainly had skill and the designs can be inventiveBut that's not what brings the book downFirst, the artists seem to like the color black a bit too much. Most of the creatures are black or at least have their color scheme subdued beyond what should be reasonable. For instance, the purple spider of Leng is black with just bits colored purple.Yog Sothoth's irredescent globes are now a dull charcoal grey.Fanciful creatures like the Magah bird and Butterfly Dragon are set to earth tones (and context, the Magah bird hypnotizes its prey using it's bright feathers while the Dragon Butterfly is described as "prismatic")Which brings me to the second problem: the disparity between the lore and the art.The aforementioned purple Leng spider being blackThe Faceless Nightgaunts have obvious glowing eyesThe Stout legs of the Dark Young looking spindly, almost frail. The jewel covered Cats of Saturn are composed of dull ropy tendrils. The Byakhee lacked any of it's insectoid featuresAnd the oily Formless Ones appearing like a Masago Sushi roll gone bad. Finally, comparisons between the original books and this are inevitable. Though as I said the artwork is quite nice on it's own (Even superior in some cases to the original) the originals were much better at adding context and interest. For example in the original we hadTsathogua lazily picking at a bone as he sat on his throne, which really showed his personalityThe Serpent People entry had the creature surrounded by magical implements, hinting back to the lore that they were great sorcerorsAnd Men of Leng surrounded by RubiesAnd the Cloudbeast being seen pulling a boat with hapless sailors into its maw.Or the picture of the Larvae fo the Outer Gods shown ina picture of a Dreamer swimming through gulfs of space, desperately shutting his eyes so he wouldnt' behold themThese all seemed to be missing from the revised book. The creatures are just .. there. The original ( at leats the dream lands book) gave these creatures much more personality and hinted at the larger mythos behind themThis was, in my opinion, a poor choice. Especially since an exception in the new book was the Dhole, rising out of the grand next a barn. It really made clear how even a "small" Dhole is huge. The only other example was Azathoth, who was set in deep space. But again the artist's obsession with making thinsg black when they shouldn't be ruined the effect (Azathoth is a roaring nuclear inferno. How is a nuclear inferno black?!)It wasn't a bad book. But it could have been so much better. It looked like the artists and writers just phoned it in.

I was expecting something of a bestiary in this title; instead, it's just a light version of the monsters section in the core rulebook. The art is great. There don't seem to be any new creatures. There are significantly less creatures than are featured in the rulebook. Also, no stats. It does add much to the game.

First of all, I don't play the Call Of Cthulhu RPG, but I am a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's literary works. This book was a great value for me, because it was rich in creepy art, with good articles describing each creature, without any of the math word problems that usually accompany an RPG monster manual. The creatures were richly illustrated, properly icky, and really sparked my imagination. I am very very pleased to own this book. The mountains of fake footnotes and "sources" for research were just icing on the cake.

As a Lovecraft fan this is a great addition to any Mythos library. The illustrations are wonderful and I found myself surprised by some of the information in it as well. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because it's not as comprehensive as I thought it was going to be, but still a delight none-the-less.

Bought pretty exclusively for the artwork, which does not disappoint! That said well laid out, seems to match the original version I have from the 90s in terms of content PLUS it includes the Dreamlands book I did not have before merged into it.

This book is awesome a good tool to have around for playing Call of Cthulhu but there is a pretty major omission from the book... Cthulhu isn't in the book for some reason even though most of the major outer gods are. Weird choice on the part of the authors.

Don't know how well it works as a bestiary for Call of Cthulhu, I think that the illustrations were good. For me, this book excels as a spoof on The Peterson's Field Guides.

Great art work. I own the original and this one is even better.

It's a great art book on its own. I own the Prometheus art book, Prometheus: The Art of the Film, and this book is comparable. The content is meatier than the Prometheus art book with most of the "meat" focusing on the "making of" aspect of Covenant rather than the back story. It is also larger in dimension than the Prometheus art book. Page count is almost identical between the two books, plus/minus 10-12 pages. The book is partitioned into chapters that represents the different Acts in the movie. Each chapter is then further subdivided into sequences of each act of the film in the order of how ALIEN: Covenant unfolds. Each of these sequences are packed with commentary, filming exposition, concept art, behind the scene film set up and -some- background story that may not have been clearly spelled out in the movie. While I am ambivalent about the film, I do enjoy a good art book and this art book delivers. For examples, the art book contains clear drawing of David's illustration in his lab with his notes, albeit hard to read. If you can muster your eyes to pick out his note, it gives you an insight of the madness that goes inside of David's mind during the 10 years of isolation. Those deformed "baby" aliens in different stages with their arms raised to the side shown in David's lab, in the film? They are actually mutated Engineer infants, as denoted in his notes. What could be improved? More information on the Engineers society and their city (yes, Scott confirms that it is indeed the Engineers that formerly occupied Paradise - not another faction of Engineers, not a humanoid Engineers-worshipping species created by the Engineers - they are the Engineers. They are as much the Engineers as much as David created the Xenomorph, enough theorizing/speculating - it's all explained in this book).I feel cheated that they've withheld content pertaining to the concepts of the Engineers and their backstory in this art book. I was expecting drawings of various Engineers, their robes, caste system and their buildings - absolutely NONE (besides the Cathedral and the Hall of Heads). It's clear that the Engineers have become an interesting side plot. Not a whole lot on the flashback scene either besides a few one liners. Definitely no art. Also besides a few passerby comments on Shaw, no concept art or exposition can be found, which is truly disappointing. Why leave out or shorten two of the most profound subjects in Covenant in an art book? For these two reasons, I am knocking out one star. Otherwise it is a solid book that any Alien fan should add to their collection.

Of an "art of" book there's not much art. Most of the nicely printed pictures are production photos focused on the actors. I was hoping for more concept art of the tech and creatutes in the move. There's also no early design work, almost every piece printed is a finalized design.

Titan books has a nice racket going: because they print these movie tie-in books in hardcover editions with heavyweight paper and full-color content, they can charge you premium for sub-par content and not rip you off in the process. I was disappointed in this book because it's nowhere near a comprehensive BTS production log of the film. It mostly consists of interviews, digital concept art, and lots of behind-the-scenes photos that aren't particularly interesting. I learned very little about the nuts-and-bolts about the production, the concept and construction art was mostly finished digital work and not prototype-to-finished stuff like we're used to seeing. But for the price and the dimensions, I would have liked to see different content than puff-piece interviews and set photography that doesn't illuminate much. The book is basically a press kit in a really nice binding on really nice paper.

Unfortunately, this book does not meet the expectations of what an "art of" title is about. Large full page screenshots from the film fill a large portion with only a quarter of the book showcasing actual art from the film. Titan Books is lazy in their efforts to justify a $40-$50 cost for content I could literally Google myself. The art of Valerian was to be my next want book but have read that they did the same treatment with that title.

Great book.I wish they had put more art in it.But still pick it up,you will love it if your an alien fan.

Most of the art in the book is computer rendered, I thought there would be more sketch work and images that showed the creative process. But all this book really is, is a making of book. Its not bad but for the money you can get better.

VERY disappointed in this book. The publishing is high quality as are the images. But 85% of the book is still photos from the film. Not very much "concept" art at all. I was hoping to at least see the drawings of Elizabeth Shaw that we got to glimpse in the film. Some of the "concept" art actually looks like it was done after the film to fill out the book itself. Now that the film has been out for a few weeks more and more "concept art" is showing up on the internet for free. Way more than appears in this book. Sigh.

I love Alien and art books. So this is nice. I enjoy happiness with this book. Accurate description, good price, fast shipping!

Six current, prominent female artists, especially one of my favorite's, Brittney Lee, are the focused of this art book. And what I found to be a great asset to art lovers is that each artists' style is different and you get to appreciate the uniqueness that each brings to the table. For example, Brittney Lee focuses on creating art out of paper. While Lisa Keene's focused on paintings and Victoria Ying's on cubism. And as an aspiring artist myself, the variety gets my creativity juices flowing and dares you to be inspired. Now, for each artist, they have 20 pages dedicated to them. Most of the images that are shown span 1 full page. But because of that, there aren't as many drawings as I expected or wanted. Oh well. For each image, there is a quick blurb from the artist about its origins. The blurbs were interesting to read. Even though these artists are famous for their works for Disney, you won't see any here. You get to see their lovely, lesser known works. All I can say is that I'm in raptures over this art book. Every single image is a feast for the eyes. I really, really love this book. I can't say enough good things. The quality of the book is top notch. The images are huge and sharp. The pages are glossy and of good quality. If you are a fan of the Golden Books, an artist, or just like good art in general, add this book to your collection. You will have no regrets.

Wonderful coffeetable book, and more - serves as an inspiration for me. I don't have a ton of artbooks, but I think this is my favorite so far.The only cons: most of the art is female-centric, except for Lisa Keene. I don't knock on her art, her pictures of various dogs are gorgeous, but they were not what I was expecting when I bought the book? I really didn't feel like that section matched the others, which is bursting with colors and characters and personality. The dogs were dark and pine green and....after seeing everything else, I just kind of passed over her section. Also, less about the artists, and their creation flow as well....I was kind of hoping for that :/

Having gone to art school I know more animators and artists than I'd ever planned on knowing. I gave this to a friend of mine for Hanukkah and it was instantly cracked open and she devoured it. With her eyeballs. Turns out she'd had her eye on it for quite some time, but hadn't been able to justify the purchase. The glossy pictures and neat writeups are fantastic and as she pointed out her favorite artist's work I kind of wished I'd read through it myself before wrapping it up. Seriously, these ladies of animation are phenomenal. If you or someone you know has even the slightest interest in animation get it.

So I’ve always loved this book. I used to check it out of my college library like every day of the week until finally I decided to buy it. I pay $20.00 or so dollars for a brand new copy. I just received it today and the letters of L-O-V-E-L-Y are torn away. The inside is good and very straight but the cover really really made me mad. If I’m paying for a new book I expect it to look new.

I absolutely adore this book! I love that it features ladies working in animation and above all, I love that this showcases their personal work. It is such an inspirational collection of artwork and the little blurbs about each ladies' creative inspiration and thought process behind the work makes it even more personal and a joy to behold. I recommend this book to any art enthusiast, especially of character design, illustration and animation. I really do hope to see more collections like this.

Bought this for my daughter who is an animation student. This is her go to book for inspiration! She loves it

I don't like a lot of extra clutter, but this book is worth the space it occupies. It shows artwork accompanied by sweet little stories by the artists. It has the perfect ratio of art-to-commentary. If you want this for the art, don't worry because it has a lot. The book is around an inch thick and has fantastic picture quality.

Open the book and you first find this beautiful quote by one of my all time favorite artists, Mary Cassatt "I have touched with a sense of art some people- they felt the love and the life. Can you offer me anything to compare to that joy for an artist?" To me this sums up the wonderful art filled world that my daughters and I live. We are sketchers...doodlers...copiers and creationists....all mediums are used in this house..we create the way we breathe.I have 2 teenage daughters that are gifted.. even more than talent..with the love of art. They both dream of making a career in the field and why not encourage them...nothing worse than squashing a dream...who knows really? This book was a gift to them, especially for the younger one who fell in love with the art work of Disney's Tangled by animator Glen Keane. His daughter, Claire is one of the artists featured in this book.Along with Claire Keane, five other talented female artists in the animation industry are featured in this book. Lorelay Bove, Brittney Lee, Lisa Keane, Victoria Ying, Helen Chen and Claire have all created art for numerous Hollywood animated films, e.g. Frozen, Tangled, Frankenweenie, Wreck-it Ralph and many more. However, this book will be showing their personal artworks which is very inspiring. This book is more than a coffee table book to us..it is motivational...spellbinding...something to find comfort in before dream time. I'm just very excited...I've waited quite a while for this book!

I have read a lot of books on this subject, and this book has a lot to offer. In many ways the concepts are new and fresh, thinking about ourselves differently, accepting our tendencies and who we are, understanding why we do what we do... This book tries to change the way you think, and thereby save a lot of effort we normally spend trying to change partners. But I have to remove 1 big star for the writing style. This material is not necessarily the easiest to digest, and on almost every page there is a word I have to look up. And even when I know what she said, I would ask, "Why would she say it that way? Why would she take something important and say it in the most difficult to understand way?" Let me take a single random passage:"The social critic Camille Paglia sees this rise in domination and submission as a collective fantasy that tweaks the rough spots of our egalitarian culture. It seems to me that rituals of domination and submission are a subversive way to put one over on a society that glorifies control, belittles dependency, and demands equality."Do I know what she meant? Well, yeah...mostly. But there are many better ways to deliver the material and make it more accessible, rather than losing me in the weeds of the writing itself.Excellent book, excellent material, unnecessarily complicated writing style.

Got to this book late and am I glad for it. When it came out I was newly remarried and didn't need and wouldn't have heard the message. But seven years into a mid-life marriage I needed tips on answering Ester Perel's Big Question (from her excellent TED Talk): Can you want what you already have? Her answer seemed to be as I read: Sure you can. But it's work. And you better understand what's going on first.Add to this that my whole arousal system of mind, body, soul and sex is older, as I'm in my mid 60s. Love what she said when asked how many times she'd been married: "Four. To the same man." This woman and mom and wife and therapist and speaker of 6 languages not only reinvented herself to stay hot for her man but to stay interesting for her two teen children living with mom/dad as a foursome. Yes, sex as a family value. From Belgium and Israel, her husband and two kids live or lived together when she wrote this from their flat in NYC. It's one thing to write how to stay hot for each other while married; it's another to pull it off and then even be able to communicate the complex system that makes it possible.I gave one to a peer guy friend and one to my son. It's that good and helpful. They say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Don't read this book too soon. Or too late either. But buy three copies and get ready. I say.

A friend asked me why he found sex with his wife "routine". He said he loved his wife and having sex with her still felt good, but he didn't feel "turned on". Instead, he found himself fantasizing about sex with other women. This book answers that question completely and helps one explore the contradictions and congruity of love and sexuality.

Fascinating and enlightening. This is one of those books that make you better, educated, happier, confident and much more if you read this with a very open mind. Perel offers great insight into human desire -- for love, sex, connection, space -- and how we tend to thwart the very intimacy we crave by applying judgement to our desires. I haven't read a better reason to be hopeful that long term relationships can maintain, even increase, passion and desire than this.

Read it. If you can't read it, read the last chapter or two. However, I believe everyone who cares about their relationship or their own health will find themselves in a few of the many examples. The overall message of the duality or tension of the long term relationship and the distance needed for eroticism seems so obvious after having read this. There are many brilliant observations in this book, but I would also recommend the many lectures that the author has given which appear on YouTube, including her TED talks. I listened to a few before reading the book and a few after reading the book. It's funny how they made so much more sense after reading the book.

If a book could save your marriage, this would be it! It has excellent advice about how to think about your intimate partnerships that will actually lead to real changes in the relationships. My sisters and I have all read this book as part of our family book club and can report much better marriages because of Esther Perel's advice. Nothing is a quick fix, but one step in a new direction can take you to new places. I recommend this book to everyone who wants a better intimate relationship--especially if you are willing to do the hard work of looking at your own actions and making small changes to be a better partner.

I think there is tremendous value in Perelman's insight that intimacy--marked by safety, closeness, and familiarity--and desire--marked by space, mystery, and risk-taking--are two distinct things. They not necessarily be opposed for many of us (thank God), but they are not the same, and need to be cultivated differently if we want to have a long term relationship marked by both loving security and erotic passion.

Anyone who desires or is in a long-term relationship should read this. This book had me hooked, I whizzed through it in about 2 days. Hugely enlightening and puts words to something I've always noticed but could never quite put my finger on. The gist is that love demands closeness, but erotic desire needs space to thrive. For modern American couples, who often have their lives so intertwined, this can lead to problems. Perel explores this seeming contradiction and sheds light on how modern couples can become aware of this and mediate it. This book is packed with wisdom. Enlightening read!
