And you will be surprised at how not tough they were to decide — but why they were, in fact, tough.For George Greer, who ruled that Schiavo’s husband had the legal authority to let his brain-dead wife die, the hardest decisions were personal. Dead flowers were delivered to his wife, with a note: “no food… no water.” His church kicked him out. Law enforcement was stationed at his house for months. Along the way, he learned something important: “Not too many people have had to stand up to their president, their congress, their legislature, and their church. I would never have known for sure I had the strength to do that if not for this case.” Only later did he learn he’d made the right decision — when Schiavo died and he saw the autopsy: “The portion of the brain to which the optic nerve is attached was completely missing. There was immense political pressure on Judge Bailey. She takes the reader through it, beat by beat, and compares it to the legal issues, which were comparatively simple. “I did not deserve praise for resisting [the political forces],” she concludes. “I simply ignored the politics, which is what judges are supposed to do.”The less well known the case, the greater the interest for me.Frederick H. Weisberg, one of the book’s editors, had the task of judging Banita Jacks, 33, who killed her four daughters in Washington, D.C. and lived for months with their remains. She declined a jury trial, refused an insanity defense. Much of this piece is the judge’s questioning of this defendant, who is extremely lucid here. And yet…Then there’s the judge on a Native American court who is caught between U.S. law with tribal law; a feather plays an important role here. “I feel like I can hear my ancestors,” she writes. “They are telling me we can’t afford to throw away our community members who make mistakes.” And there’s a girl who became desperately ill and then got worse because her mother poisoned her in the hospital. And a case in Washington where the voters went one way and the state’s constitution went another. “They don’t pay me to be right,” the judge notes. “They pay me to be fair.”I was particularly impressed with that judge, Robert H. Alsdorf of Washington. He does something you don’t see often: he notes the compelling arguments of the losers. “I try to explicitly note for the losing party how laudable . . . its . . . legal argument is, and then give a straightforward explanation of why that factor nonetheless cannot be used by the court to justify a ruling in its favor. . . . We can acknowledge this without losing any judicial power.” And the losers know they’ve been heard.And there are fascinating breadcrumbs along the way. Did you know that only one state has expressly prohibited sex between an attorney and his client? And that Texas had the chance to make that illegal in 2017? And that 72 percent voted against the change? I guess if you’re a lawyer who likes to cross the ethical line with a client, Texas is not the worst place to practice.

This is a compendium of a dozen or so cases, some famous, some not, by the trial judges who tried them. They range from the well known case of Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban child who landed in Fla. and whose relatives flew into a tremendous dispute as to his being returned to Cuba, to cases in state and Federal courts including an intriguing murder/insanity case in Washington, DC, a case in an Indian tribal court, and others, civil and criminal. A few of the cases are a bit hard to follow; others are fascinating. If you ever wondered what a trial judge thinks and how he/she goes about their duty, you'll find this a very interesting read.

This is a compilation of cases each written by the presiding judge that he or she found to be difficult for one reason or another. Some were headline cases, such as Terry Schiavo “right to die”; Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban refugee child; and Scooter Libby, who squealed on Valerie Plane, was convicted of lying to the FBI, whose sentence was commuted by Bush and subsequently pardoned by Trump. Most of the cases were difficult not because of the law, which was clear cut, but because of the publicity and the involvement of Republican politicians in Florida and in the Scooter Libby case. The fact that most of these judges were elected and wished to run again and the lawyers appearing before them often contribute to their campaigns is an unstated argument against election of judges. This is a short book, designed for the layman, but engaging and informative nonetheless.

Good reminder that a strong judiciary is our best hope for continued liberty from tyranny. Most of the judges are excellent writers and make this a pleasure to read. I enjoyed getting the background and insight into the judges thinking on cases from those in the spotlight to the unknown but equally intersting cases.

This is one of the best mountaineering expedition books I have read. Ridgeway takes the reader through the intense daily struggles (both mental & physical) required to climb K2, perhaps the hardest of the 8000 meter peaks to climb. In 1978 a large team of Americans, including some of the best US high altitude climbers at that time, have the all consuming goal to be the first from the USA to reach the summit of K2 (which had been climbed only twice before). Their incredible ordeal begins with an arduous approach hike, and continues with increasingly difficult challenges against the weather, altitude, and other deadly hazards. Unfortunately, the team members frequently argued, and struggled to work together effectively. Ridgeway is very candid about this, and does not spare himself criticism. Against all odds, 4 climbers made superhuman efforts to achieve the summit (mostly without supplemental oxygen) by a new route, and somehow survived the descent. Ridgeway's masterful writing made me feel like I was there, and I gained tremendous appreciation for the commitment and skills of the climbers. My only complaint was the lack of diagrams showing the route and camps, but the photos are striking.

Great Book, all of the personal intrigue makes it an engaging read. Had just read Living on the Edge: The Winter Ascent of Kanchenjunga byCherie Bremer-Kamp who was on the trip, and she recommended it. And also having read Roskelly's book about Nanda Devi I felt like I knew many of the characters. And they don't get along. A beautiful route to K2's peak that I had never learned about before. The cover says it all, some of the climbers had to traverse that knife edge ridge 11 times! A big adventure, and I don't think anyone dies, spoiler alert

"The Last Step: The American Ascent of K2" is Rick Ridgeway's extremely well written account of the first successful American ascent (and only third overall ascent at the time) of the world's second highest peak. "The Last Step" is the "expedition account" and includes fascinating commentary from several climbers, making for a more rounded view than most climbing books. "The Last Step" is blessed with a stunning collection of photographs which provide a sense of scale both of the beauty of the Karakoram Mountains and of the incredibly difficult terrain the expedition overcame.Ridgeway's account candidly describes the tensions and acrimony that built up in the expedition as it was repeatedly stalled by poor weather in the fall of 1978. The expedition spent 67 days on the mountain, much of it exposed to the debilitating effects of high altitude. The normally driven and competitive natures of good climbers became points of friction as the expedition faced oncoming winter and the likelihood that few if any of the climbers were going to get a shot at the summit.Ridgeway's narrative of the two successful summit attempts is absolutely hair-raising, as men too long in the "dead zone" above 26,000 feet climbed like near-zombies over dangerously exposed snow slopes. One climber, Jim Wickwire, was forced to bivouac overnight in sub-zero temperatures at 28,000 feet after zoning out and lingering too long at the summit.The account makes clear that only the most fit, capable, and single-minded climbers had any chance of topping out on K2 under the conditions faced in 1978. Those climbers with lesser skills or with distractions such as homesickness or as in one case, an affair with another member of the team, were unable or unwilling to risk all for the summit.This book is most highly recommended to fans of the climbing account genre. Although a long read at over 300 pages, others may find it of interest as an indepth look at what happens on world-class climbing expeditions.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most riveting mountaineering books around. Not for the climbing, which is in and of itself gripping, but for the slice of human drama found in the deterioration of relationships amongst various members of the expedition. At times, one is mesmerized by the bad behavior displayed at such high altitudes! One would think that these expeditioners were on Melrose Place, rather than fighting for their place in mountaineering history on K2, one of the most perilous mountains in the world to ascend.Central to all the squabbling, was the love trangle which developed on the expedition, which was perceived by some of the expeditioners to be an extra marital affair in progress. Though this later proved to be true, at the time it was the source of much denial and hard feelings. It further split the team, which was already divided over who would be chosen to summit, and eroded already existing friendships, while preventing new ones which might have otherwise developed.On top of all this, add in poor weather which caused them to spend about sixty seven days on the mountain, mostly at altitudes over eighteen thousand feet, and you have a recipe for disaster. These expeditioners, however, managed to become the first Americans to ascend K2.Their success in achieving their objective, despite the trials and tribulations which they endured, is testament to their fortitude in putting aside petty, mean spirited concerns and inter-personal conflicts. This painstaking account of the first time summit of K2 by Americans is a must read for all climbing enthusiasts and readers of this genre.

I followed Aaron Hernandez’s trial with great interest and can say with confidence that I have read and watched *everything* publicly available on the case. From trial transcripts to news articles to Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez’s appearance on Dr. Phil to the special on Oxygen to even that horrid James Patterson novel that I tore apart in a review here on Amazon—I have consumed everything I can find. I read the book against that backdrop of information and concluded:1. This book is by far the best resource on the Hernandez case.Hernandez was so secretive and, amazingly enough, the family and friends who were closest to him (so, not his brother and mother) have remained mostly mum. As a result, there has not been any illumination of his thoughts and decisions and reasons. Unless Baez is wholesale fabricating most of the book (doubtful since he has Hernandez-Jenkins’s approval), he got very close to Aaron and became one of his few confidants. As a result, this book really sheds light on Hernandez in a way never seen before.2. This book answers controversial questions.From Hernandez’s sexuality to the full text of his suicide notes to the lifestyles of the Cape Verdeans he was accused of murdering, Baez touches on topics that were hitherto unaddressed or for which confusing accounts exist. Virtually any question that has been on answered until now is addressed in this book. Having had my time wasted by James Patterson’s account, I really appreciated that Baez made this read worthwhile.3. The book is respectful both to Hernandez and to the victims.Whenever I read that an attorney is going to write a tell-all book on his client, my instinctive reaction is disgust. I think I am in the majority on that. Baez took what could have been a very sleazy exercise and makes it feel almost like the kind of book Hernandez himself might have written had he been able to tell his own story. Baez is true to his loyalty to his client and his love of Hernandez humanizes Hernandez in a way I did not think possible. Out of nowhere, I found my heart breaking not only for the victims, but also for the loss of a young, talented man who fought his way up from poverty with sheer force of will and talent only to fall so far short of what he should have been. I did not expect to sympathize with Hernandez. I also found myself believing that the acquittal in the second trial was the right verdict. I did not expect that. At the same time, Baez is fair to the victims. Such balance is not easy to achieve.4. This is book gives insight into Baez and is an excellent primer in how to try a criminal case.I picked up this book as much to learn about Jose Baez as to deepen my understanding of Aaron Hernandez. As a fellow litigator, I have long been intrigued by Baez. Despite media depictions of him as what happens when a bumbling, oafish cretin is crossed with a money-grubbing ambulance-chaser who will defend anyone for a buck, the man keeps winning. And he’s winning really tough cases. Lay people think this is because he is lucky or because juries are stupid, but as a trial attorney, I know it takes considerable skill to prevail against the odds his clients face.This book told me why Baez keeps winning. He is a phenomenal attorney. Plain and simple. Anyone with an interest in the law MUST read this book. Baez really understands investigations, trial strategy, and advocacy, and he conveys the information in a very easy-to-read, conversational style. The man should consider holding lectures and seminars.5. There are many life lessons to be gleaned.Even if you are not a lawyer or a law junkie, this book is simply a fascinating case study in how pride goeth before a fall, youths are sacrificed on the altar of football, and lives can be derailed by keeping the wrong company. Hernandez’s story is a true Greek tragedy. An unexpected lesson is the fact that everything we think we know about a case from media coverage can be so wrong.

Mrs. Andre here. Still crying after reading this. He didn't have to die this way. Much evidence points to his innocence and I am appalled and disgusted by corrupt law enforcement. How DARE they trying link him and only him to these crimes? The Patriots are disgusting too. They turned their back on him without giving him any benefit of the doubt. I'm glad he's at peace. The truth about CTE must not be concealed. I feel like Baez will fight for Aaron and all future players against the NFL. They can't continue to lie.

Báez is coming for everyone and we should all be here for it! 👏👏👏 After the James Patterson book proved to be as insightful as a poop-emoji essay, I had some reservations about another AH book. Hernandez never spoke to the media about any of his legal issues, he did not make any statements through his agent or lawyer, and did not grant any sit-down interviews about any part of his ordeal, which means wanting to report on him is going to limit you to either summarizing previously published think-pieces or interviewing someone's uncle’s co-worker's nephew's former neighbor — who once saw AH holding a footbal at Briston Central High School— in order to get some “insight’ into what happened. Watching AH's interaction in court w/ this legal team was priceless and this book does a great job of adding all the "behind the scenes."This book is a page-turner!

I started reading this book believing Aaron Hernandez was guilty. I’m from Boston and a huge Pats fan so the last thing I wanted to believe was that Aaron was capable of this but everything I heard on the news pointed to his guilt. I was one of the many people who believed Aaron got annoyed over a spilled drink so he shot and killed 2 people - I assumed he was some lucky punk who felt untouchable but I’ve changed my mind.I couldn’t put this book down! Jose Baez really broke the case down and explained everything so well. It’s unbelievable to me how the prosecution could put this man on trial with no real evidence. And I still can’t get over the street sweeper 😳What could have been such a beautiful life ended so tragically. Clearly Aaron Hernandez was in a lot of pain and is hopefully at peace now.

Not sure where to begin...I was able to complete this book in one day. Not because it was a short read, quite the opposite. I was so intrigued with every detail and word coming from Jose. I felt like I was there in the trial and shared the experiences with Aaron along with the lawyers. It was very engaging. So many facts that were shared that I wasn't aware of. Born and raised in Florida, we KNOW who's who for football. Aaron was "that" guy! Such an enormous talent. In 20 years of professional airbrushing I have never seen such poor instruction book published. The only good part of the book was seeing the gallery of work from good artists. The Airbrush Handbook is a far better choice for quality instruction... Including T shirt work.

Basic stuff in here. The book is old, and I bought this like, 10 years ago. Guess ill review it. It's ok, nothing fancy, but they don't really give you step by step, its more like....hey, look what others can do, and when you figure out how they did it, you can do it too.

I am not the one learning to airbrush, so I can't really say how good this book is. It is rather dated, but I couldn't find another one at this time. My grandson is the artist and so I hope it helps him.

I expected trade secrets, best how-to's, and overall explanations on how things can be done most efficiently.This was a book where each chapter discussed, for example, gave an action like "keeping positive," defined it for about 3-4 pages, and then gave a one paragraph real-life example of how one of their peers stayed positive during a hard time.It's not a bad book but not at all what I needed or wanted. I am a first time executive assistant for a government SES in an extremely high level office. I need something that packed serious information and how-to's. If that is what you're looking for then I recommend the"Administrative Assistant and Secretary's Handbook" by James Stroman. It was exactly what I needed.

I purchased the Kindle Edition and I'm so glad I did so I could read it instantly. I highly recommend this book if you are in Office Administration. You will find encouragement and laughs throughout this book.This is my second book purchase from Joan Burge's collection. She really knows this field.
