Grammar Girl's Punctuation 911: Your Guide to Writing it Right (Quick & Dirty Tips) by Mignon FogartyGrammar Girl's Punctuation 911 is a fun, quick way to brush up on punctuation. Mignot Fogarty, better known as Grammar Girl provides the public with an accessible reference on punctuation. This useful 48-page eBook addresses the most commonly asked questions regarding punctuation.Positives:1. Succinct, useful guide on punctuation.2. Grammar Girl has a masterful command of the topic.3. Grammar that is actually fun and accessible. Conversational tone that engages the public on what is usually considered a boring topic.4. Excellent presentation. Good use of visual material to complement accessible narrative.5. Useful. An excellent brief reference that is handy to have.6. Focuses on the most important aspects of punctuation. She doesn't waste time by going over needless exceptions; she stays on topic.7. Like a good educator she provides plenty of examples.8. Interrobang, just because.9. Excellent job of describing the difference between semicolons and colons; I can use semicolons with confidence now.10. Addresses to satisfaction when and when not to use commas. "So, the bottom line is that whether to use the serial comma is a style issue."11. I actually learned how to use quotation marks. "In the United States, periods and commas go inside the quotation mark." Just like that. In Britain, they go outside.12. How many actually know what [sic] means? "Is Latin for `thus; so' and indicates the error was made by the speaker or original writer and not by the current writer." You're welcome.13. Provides link to her popular website.14. A whole series of books like this one and even a popular podcast to boot.Negatives:1. Intended for laypersons. It's brief and lacks depth.2. No notes or formal bibliography. In summary, this eBook is a short and accessible reference on punctuation. Grammar Girl is a joy to read which justifies her popularity. As an engineer, I can use all the help I can get and I'm thankful for such a resource. Look forward to referencing more of her books. I recommend it.Further recommendations: "Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing (Quick & Dirty Tips)" by the same author from which this material came from, "Word Up! How to Write Powerful Sentences and Paragraphs (And Everything You Build from Them)" by Marcia Riefer Johnston, "The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition" by William Strunk Junior, "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser, "The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need: A One-Stop Source for Every Writing Assignment" by Susan Thurman and Larry Shea, "Book Writing Mistakes (How To Avoid The Top 12 Mistakes New Business Book Authors Make)" by Jim Edwards, "How to Write Great Blog Posts that Engage Readers (Better Blog Booklets Book 1)" by Steve Scott, "English Grammar For Dummies" by Geraldine Woods, and "The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation: An Easy-to-Use Guide with Clear Rules, Real-World Examples, and Reproducible Quizzes" by Jane Straus. For more experienced writers, "The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century" by Steven Pinker.

When I'm not writing, I'm editing. I'm a contract editor for a publisher. I also edit for friends and friends of friends in between assignments, and in between those assignments and requests, I edit myself. One thing editing has taught me is to be hyperaware of not making the same mistakes as the writers that I'm editing. While my job is primarily about spotting continuity errors, applying duct tape to plot holes and fact checking, I also try to clean up the grammar and punctuation as much as I can.I've had many writers tell me that they do not remember how to properly use commas and other punctuation marks. I've had some tell me that expecting them to use them between independent clauses isn't required anymore--well it is. I've had others blink at me like a deer in the headlights when I tell them that a semicolon should be used instead when there is no conjunction.I read books on grammar. It's part of my job. It's me making sure that I am not sending my editors a nightmare. You cannot trust Word to put a green line under all your grammatical errors, because when it comes to commas, Word is frequently wrong. This little 99 cent book is wonderful. Grammar Girl breaks punctuation down in plain English, and she gets the message across about how it should be done with simple examples. Any one who writes or edits should buy this book. It will never leave my Kindle. It has replaced English Simplified as my favorite book for punctuation and grammar, and not just because English Simplified is overpriced because it's a textbook. You don't feel like you're in English 101 with some grad student browbeating you for leaving out a comma with Grammar Girl's Punctuation 911. If you write, you can't afford not to buy and read this book.

O.K. this book is useful, but too short. For the price, you can't expect much more anyway. I wanted to give this book 3/4 stars, but gave it full five stars because the author refers to 'Punctuate it Right' classic book (by Harry Shaw) that is available to download in Mobi format, totally free of cost. Just Google .... (Did you notice the four dots there? That's three dots followed by a period, something I learned in this book.) If you have a Kindle (or any other ebook reader), you are in luck! I am yet to read the other book, but since it's recommended by a good author, I am sure it must be good too.To the Author: Thank you so much grammar girl - my investment in your book has been paid over and over because of that single suggestion :) Also, I am sure there are many punctuation mistakes in these two paragraphs. If you come across this review, try to point out the mistakes, so that I can increase my ROI even more!

This was a worthwhile read. It gives several examples in each section. The author also points out the difference between UK and U.S.A. English where applicable. She explained the differences between dashes well and how writers can insert the correct ones because there is no actual keyboard key for the em dash; it needs to be downloaded as a symbol. Alternatively, a double -- can be entered. For a short book, all the essential ingredients were explained.

This is a really great book, and a fun read. It covers the Boring subject of punctuation in a fun, easy to understand manner. It is very instructional and not the least bit "stuffy." Unfortunately, it really should have some sort of way to look up subjects! A simple `Table of Contents' would honestly help make finding a specific subject much easier. As it is, you will have to read through the entire book and add your own bookmarks. The Kindle's search function works, but is little help on a specific subject.

In "Seal of Approval: The History of the Comics Code", Amy Kiste Nyberg argues, "[Fredric] Wertham’s role in the crusade against comics has been largely misinterpreted by fans and scholars alike, who dismiss his findings as naïve social science, failing to understand how his work on comic books fits into the larger context of his beliefs about violence, psychiatry, and social reform" (p. xiii). Nyberg traces the origin of objections to comics back to the early 1940s, but explains that the panic did not intensify until after the war, when publishers, no longer able to use patriotism as an easy selling point, began branching out into horror and crime stories to maintain sales. Despite public cries for censorship, Nyberg argues that the U.S. Senate committee knew it was effectively powerless. Nyberg writes, “…the intention of the hearings from the beginning was to force (or frighten) the publishers into adopting a self-regulatory code like that of the film industry” (p. 79). Nyberg demonstrates that Wertham offered vindication to mothers who felt responsible for juvenile delinquency. In focusing on the gendered argument against comics, Nyberg writes, “The issue of gender is linked to violence in Wertham’s study, since women are generally victims in comic books…In many comic books, women were portrayed as objects to be abused or to be used as decoys in crime settings. Women who did not fall into the role of victim were generally cast as villains, often with masculine or witchlike powers” (p. 95). Later, Judge Charles F. Murphy, the first “czar” of the Comics Magazine Association of America, hired a staff of five women to help him evaluate the comics that passed through his office. Nyberg writes, “Enforcing standards in children’s reading material was an extension of the mother’s role” in 1950s America (p. 115). Though Nyberg reinterprets Wertham's role in this history of censorship, she does not suggest that he was justified in his stance. In sum, Nyberg presents a balanced portrait of the moral panic over comics in the 1950s and its role in censorship.

"Seal of Approval" was recommended along with David Hadju's "Ten-Cent Plague". I have read them both. To my mind this one is better, but I may be approaching this from a different perspective than most. I work in an industry that is currently confronted with many of the issues that the comics industry confronted in the 1950s - the video game business - and so I'm looking specifically for something that will be instructive and not just descriptive.Unlike Hadju's book, "Seal of Approval" is written by an academic (Nyberg is a professor at Seton Hall) and it shows. It's a very balanced historical overview coupled with an analysis of the Code and its various iterations over time. It speaks to the cultural context to the original Code but also to the way the companies governed by the Code adapted themselves over time, as well as the fact that not all publishers were governed by the Code and yet some managed to stay in business (Dell being the most significant). It's very well-researched (15 pages of bibliography) and it's definitely worth picking up.The strongest part of this book is the way that it puts the crusaders in their social, cultural, and professional context. Fredric Wertham, who seems to have been the Jack Thompson or Carrie Nation of this issue, is often caricatured as... well... just like Jack Thompson or Carrie Nation. In Nyberg's presentation we learn that Wertham was a social scientist of some note before he got to this issue. He may well have gone off the deep end when he got to comics but it's interesting to see how he got there and explains why he got the exposure he didThe most cogent criticism I'd give of the book is one that's common to books written by academics: except for social scientists who are used to doing interviews most academics don't like to get out and deal with people in their work and so they end up relying on source materials where source interviews might be more helpful. I don't know whether Nyberg did do interviews or not, but the sections on how the review process actually worked over time and still work today read like they're assembled from materials. They could have used some perspective on how the business actually is done. As the guy who often does content review for Microsoft games, I know that a policy manual is tough to work with because of the edge cases and the subjective nature of reviewing, and if you went only from written documents you'd miss the flavor of the exercise. But seriously, this is a good book on its own merits. As a source for consideration about whether and how the games business might develop "Seal of Approval" is also helpful. Although not perfect for the reasons I mention, the sections dealing with life under the Code and the changes to the Code over time have been instructive. Nyberg isn't Niall Ferguson either but I'll be recommending this book to colleagues anyway.

If you think Seduction of the Innocent was the sole factor in the establishment of the Comics Code, think again. This book is expertly written and extremely well researched. You will be shocked by just how much you DON'T know about the history of this industry with regard to censorship.

Only about 1/3 of the way thru. Did not realize this book is from 1998 when I Ordered it. Has some interesting ideas about the comics crash. It reads like the thesis paper it was based on. A pity, I'l probably never make it thru. I suppose I disagree with premise that Super heroes prove that Comics Code didn't hurt comics.

Oh wow. Wow wow wow! This book shocked me, shook me and hooked me. The FMC is stronger than you can imagine - or SHE can even imagine. Contrary to my normal book fare, this novel offers a true damsel in distress scenario - but it’s a gut wrenching one that will wreck you, and somehow shows her to be anything but a damsel in distress. Oh, She needs saving, but there is a fierce innocence in her eventual freedom - and a courage that belies the circumstance she literally grew up in.Warning!! This book is incredibly sexually explicit, detailing moments of non-consent, torture, bondage and true rape. Be aware of this BEFORE you pick it up! And know, that despite these inclusions in this tale, the author in no way, shape or form, romanticizes such actions. Instead, they show the monster beneath the mask.Pros:- Exceptionally well written- Edited well- FMC is freaking unbelievable- The phoenixes...- World buildingCons:- Hard to read only due to content.- Cliffhanger!!! Why?! Why?! Lol, *sigh* 🤷‍♀️🥺

First of all everyone should read the warning. This book is dark, has elements of sexual and metal abuse and can be triggering for some. Now that this is out of the way, I loved the first half of the book. I couldn't tell what was going to happen! This is the first book from Loxley Savage and I think she did a great job. Slave 8 can't remember a life before captivity but she still has a spark inside her and wants to break free. She is such an amazing character I fell in love with her in the first few pages. What I didn't like as much in the book were the male POV parts. I couldn't connect with them as strongly and for being warriors they seemes too soft and too unorganized at time. What I really didn't like is a scene aound 60% through the book. I know this is a dark book but that was just too much for me.I still liked the book as a whole, the story has lots of potential and I hope a certain villain truns out to be an anti-hero.This book ends on a cliffhanger

This is the first book from this author and it just blew me away, I loved it so much! It does have a lot of triggering aspects and you've been warned. We also get some parts of the story in other characters povs and it really helps to drive the story. The story, plot, characters, actions and romance, and the writing, in general, are all spectacular and will leave you thirsty and wanting more. I'm so excited for book 2, this author is on my radar for sure!

This is probably going to sound weird but I wanted Trinity to be more damaged. I mean the poor girl has been through hell and the second one of her saviors touch her she’s horney and ready to have sex. It’s not that I want her to be weak but It just wasn’t what I was expecting. I mean, she has been abused by sick men since she was a baby so I just thought she would be a bit more apprehensive towards men and their touch..alsoThe plot were there but were somehow dragged down.. the book also ended in with a huge cliffhanger which I normally don’t mind but this time I just felt unsatisfied reading it.

I received an ARC copy for an honest review. This book is VERY dark, and has elements of captivity and dub-con. So if that kind of content offends or triggers you, do not read this book.I really loved this book. The characters were immediately captivating, and the storyline was gripping and intense. One of the things I loved was that I couldn’t tell what was going to happen. Nothing about this book is predictable or cliched. And while there were quite a few sex scenes, none of them took away from the story. The book did end on a cliffhanger, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I seriously loved the book and now I have to suffer the book hangover. Right now I'm opening a can of whoop-ass for that cliffhanger. Can you feel me kicking your butt? (talking to the author). :D The story is dark and deliciously twisted. It'll make you wonder about your sanity at moments. At other moments faith in the male species is restored. I'm totally hooked, I don't care how long it takes for book two to come out, or if I have to hunt the author down and clean her home so she can write. I just want the next book.

Dark. Erotic. Paranormal. Rh. 3 shifters. Mate bond(very sexual). BDSM. Slaves. Captured. Multi POV. Trigger Warning. Slave Eight was taken from her crib as a babe by a Worlock for his brothel of rare creatures. She has only known the inside of the room she lives in and the darkness behind the blindfold. Hot very hot. If your into humiliation, bondage, and noncon well this may just turn you on. 😘 I very much enjoyed it. Hope you will too. Ends on a cruel cliffhanger. That poor girl.

I was warned ahead of time but Loxley still surprised me and blew it out of the water! I couldn't stop reading it and stayed up a couple nights waaaay too long for "just one more chapter" hahaha. Do not read if you have trigger warnings. This is a dark RH. I cannot wait to read more from this author and will probably read this again after reading some lighter/funnier books haha. I highly recommend this new author ❤️
