Jeff Liker has produced another superb book in the Toyota Way series, this time with the help of Michael Hoseus. This volume is an even more Herculean effort at assembling detail than the last were. Every step of the process of recruiting, hiring, training, developing, integrating, and supporting the people who add the value to Toyota products is spelled out. It is amazingly content-rich.And, once again Liker captures the essential message that what the management of Toyota does is not just a series of techniques, but rather a complex, interacting, systemic way of thinking. The attention to detail, the relentless, never-ending improvement and the ability to adhere to a basic set of values in the face of challenge after challenge is nothing short of extraordinary. Toyota deservedly sits on top of the competitive pile. No one does it better and, as this wonderful volume shows so clearly, it's damn hard work.I have stopped wondering if America manufacturers will 'get it'. They won't. As much as The Toyota Way was a result of a particular time and a particular culture, our time (now) and our culture (just win, baby) preclude wide acceptance of these methods. Just read the book and imagine almost any of these management methods being adopted by American managers and you will see how wide the gulf truly is. And the unvarnished truth is that that gulf hasn't narrowed appreciably in the past 40 years. But as a guide the book is extraordinarily useful. I would think it would be excellent reading for Human Resources professionals and Organizational Change and Organizational Development people. It is a highly commendable effort and a very good book.

Toyota Culture is the 5th book in "the Liker Toyota series". After Toyota Way, Toyota Way Fieldbook, Toyota Product Development and Toyota Talent, you would expect that there is less news to write about Toyota. Well, not true. Toyota Talent is the thickest book in the series with it's almost 600 pages of Toyota info.Toyota Culture mainly covers HR practices and related policies. It describes this as "the people value stream". How does Toyota hire and train people (the detailed training processes are described in Toyota Talent). How do they grow inside the company. How does Toyota work with the local communities. The book is separated in five parts:- What is Toyota Culture?- The Quality People Value Stream- People Supporting Process- Organizational Supporting Processes- Learning from ToyotaThe first part is some-of an introduction. It explores what "company culture" means by referring to the work of Ed Schein. Then it introduces "the people value-stream" which the rest of the book is organized around. Part 2 is about the value stream itself while part 3 and 4 are the supporting processes of the people value stream.Part 2 talks about how Toyota does hiring and how they grow the people within the company. It starts with the hiring and from there onto the training part (which had some duplication with Toyota Talent) and then moved into problem solving, one of the essential parts of the Toyota culture. It ends with how Toyota builds its image and works with the local communities to improve the life of its employees. The third part starts by looking at the Toyota organizational structure, work teams and the team leader role. From there it moves to safe workplaces and how the standard problem solving is also applied to workplace safety problems. The last 2 chapters are about visual management and servant leadership. How management acts as servants and teachers to the workers, enabling the value-added work. The fourth part looks at organizational supporting processes and especially HR processes. Toyota still want people to have a job for life, even though this is not common outside Japan. It talks about how Toyota deals with ups and downs in resourcing and moves to HR policies and rewarding policies (an very interesting chapter!). Chapter 15 is a short introduction to Hoshin Kanri. The last part is about learning from Toyota, the "what can you do" part which many books end with. The first two chapters describes a couple of Toyota Way implementations within Toyota itself, to try to learn from that. The last chapter (probably the best) looks at lean implementations and wonders why they fail. It tries to find general change recommendations to try to learn from Toyota while creating your own company culture.Parts of the book were extremely good and, at other times, parts of the book were somewhat long and boring. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I had that possibility and decided to go to 5 stars since I felt the last chapter was really very good.A couple of things that I didn't like. Most of the book talks about Toyota in the US and seldom talks about the Toyota culture in Japan. It's obvious the authors are most familiar with the Toyota US situation. Also, most of the book still has a manufacturing focus. There is very little about other functions (e.g. product development) within the book itself. The culture in the different functions is probably similar, but will also have differences. Things like organizational structures and teamwork will be different in the different functions and thats not covered. All in all, another great Toyota book. Highly recommended for people who are interested in how Toyota works and why. I wouldn't recommend it as your first Toyota book, I'd probably then start with the Toyota Way book and move to this one after that.

Mike Hoseus, author of Toyota Culture and the executive director for the Center for Quality People and Organizations just presented at [...]. The presentation is archived now at the website.I'm just finishing the book with 5 friends where we talk about the main ideas and how they are relevant and what we can do - we review one chapter per week. The author has a keen insight in viewing culture and breaks it down, at the lowest level to what we deeply believe in and act on. I characterize Toyota as designing their relationships with the detail that an engineer would bring. The way that Toyota aligns company goals with employee goals for long term mutual prosperity makes the horizontal nature of the organizational structure a reality.Coming from a career working at Toyota in Kentucky, the author presents the ideas from the boot laces. He claims it starts at values and with servant leadership, putting the president at the bottom of the pyramid and the suppliers - team members - customers at the top.If you and your team are already exposed to lean and have chosen this path, this is the book for you. It shows Toyota's detailed human value stream and demonstrates how to organize human resources to thrive. For more information, watch the session with Mike Hoseus at [...]

The Cruising Guide to the Northern Leeward Islands, by Chris Doyle

About the Author

Chris Doyle's cruising guides are among the most popular in the Eastern Caribbean. Chris attributes this to listening to his customers when they tell him what they would like to see in a guide, and following their ideas when it makes sense. In this way his guides have always been highly innovative, leading the way in color sketch charts, then computerized color sketch charts, GPS waypoints, star charts and a guide-linked website where people can find corrections, download town maps, download GPS waypoints, access navigational advisories, and get links to down island businesses. Chris was born in England, but as soon as he was finished with college he set sail in an old Colin Archer called Sugar Creek, sailed south until the butter melted, turned right and ended up in Grenada, where he became a resident, and has been so ever since. To make ends meet, he built and rented a house, day-chartered, skippered yachts, and undertook deliveries. One of these nearly turned out badly on an older 38 foot yacht when the rudder shaft sheared some 50 miles west of Saba. However, the owner had some tools on board, and Chris and owner and his party managed to steer the boat for three days by balancing the sails and during that time managed to construct a temporary external rudder, so they could arrive under their own steam. Just as well, as the yacht in question was fitted with one of the early VHF radios, which had not yet arrived down-island, so there was no way to call for help. Chris built his dream boat a few years ago in Trinidad, a 40 foot catamaran called Ti Kanot. He spends well over half the year on board, visiting all the anchorages he has to update, and is well-known in the islands where he is also a yachting correspondent for Caribbean Compass, and he also writes for the international yachting press when asked. For part of the summer he travels, usually to Vermont where he stays with his life-partner Virginia Barlow.

I bought this as a gift for my friend from Afghanistan, who was one of the women who taught girls secretly in her home during the Taliban occupation. She cried and cried when she saw and read this book. I am so happy to have found it.

Something about this book really clicked with my 6-year-old - she's a somewhat reluctant reader, but wants to read this one again and again! We had gotten it from the library, but because of how much she loved it, I finally ordered the book. Sweet story that exposes children to the struggles of kids around the world in a very gentle way. Wonderful book!

My 7 year old daughter loves this book and has read it several times since it arrived. This had been a great conversation starter about life in more oppressive countries and what it might be like to be a child in Afghanistan. Recommended for any 1st or 2nd grade classroom.

A glimpse of life in a troubled part of the world. Best, I would think, for informed children at least 9 or so as it is a difficult life for the subjects, with parental loss involved.Education's benefit illustrated.

I used this story in my 7th grade classroom as a tool for helping students identify problems and solutions. This book was a quick read for them and they were able to understand the story and the skill. They all really enjoyed the book and it had them generate a lot of questions about the outside world!

This was a good story. Somewhat of a tearjerker. Such a short story but with such a big impact. I purchased the book to find out what it was about since my son's third-grade class was going to be reading it together.

As described, thank you 😊

I watch the morning news while getting ready for work. While with me during those morning routines, my first-grader had many questions I did not feel I could adequately and appropriately answer. This is a terrific book for introducing the idea to elementary school children, foreign and horrible as it may be, that there are places where going to school is dangerous. In addition to planting the seeds of appreciation for her own education and her luck in being born when/where she was, the idea of being able to defy evil by learning to read is very exciting. There is also a girl and her grandmother who are not helpless after being left alone when her parents disappear. That part of the story was not nearly as scary to her as I thought it would be. In subtext, the fear of the "bad guys" is offset by the others who endanger themselves to allow the school to succeed and the students to be safe. This is a terrific book that I will start giving as a gift to my elementary-aged friends and relatives.

The Littlest Levine (Passover), by Sandy Lanton

Review

"Hannah hates the feeling of dependency that comes from being the smallest and youngest member of her family: she can't decorate the sukkah, light the Hanukkah candles, or even put the Purim hamentashen in the oven without help from an adult. But Grandpa knows that there's one part of the seder that no one else can do ('Don't worry,' he tells her. 'Soon you'll be glad to be the littlest Levine'). With nightly tutoring, which becomes a beloved ritual for Hannah, Grandpa makes sure that his granddaughter shines when it comes to the most important job for the youngest seder participant: singing the Four Questions. Sunny cartooning from Keay (I Love You All Year Long) and Lanton's (Lots of Latkes) light narrative touch make this story of diligence, identity (both familial and religious), and intergenerational love stand out. Ages 3-8. Illustrator’s agent: Advocate Art. (Feb.)" -- Publisher's Weekly (Journal)"For little Hannah, being the youngest in the family is a vexing issue―until it is time for the Passover Seder, and one special honor is given only to her. Hannah continually laments that she is too small to reach the sink, join brother and sister on the school bus, and even light Hanukkah candles by herself. Grandpa tells her to be patient, as soon her holiday will come. Together, they spend many evenings after dinner in the study, learning something special that will be revealed to the whole family at the upcoming Seder. On the first night of Passover, Hannah takes much pride in reciting the traditional four questions as required by the youngest family member, finally delighted to be the littlest Levine. Generic watercolor drawings in pale spring hues place this intergenerational, observant family in a middle-class, suburban setting. The well-developed storyline provides enough intrigue to engage the littlest listeners and culminates pleasingly. This should be inspirational to little tykes who are expected to carry on with the tradition and need to understand their larger role in the Seder ceremony. (author’s note) (Picture book. 3-6)" -- Kirkus Reviews (Journal)"Hannah doesn't like being the youngest in her family. She is too short to hang fruit in the sukkah, too young to light the Hanukkah candles by herself, she can't reach the sink, and she can't tie her own shoes. Hannah doesn't go to school yet, but Grandpa saves the day when he teaches her that being the youngest is something to be proud of. As Hannah and her family prepare for Passover, Hannah secretly prepares for something else with the help of her grandpa. This is a wonderful story about the importance of being the youngest in the family during the holiday of Passover. The Littlest Levine not only shows the importance of family and traditions but the gift of helping each other out. The bright, colorful painted illustrations are simple yet whimsical and will appeal to young readers. Charming book that celebrates both Jewish holidays and being the littlest in a group. Hannah Levine is having a hard time. Everybody has jobs to do in preparation for many of the holiday celebrations. Poor Hannah is relegated to the minimum amount of work, because she is the littlest. On Sukkot, she needs her dad to help her hang the pretty paper chains. When they light the Channuka menorah, grandma must guide her hand. With every chore, she is reminded that she has limitations and resents her position in the family. However, her grandfather assures her that there is a benefit to being the youngest. Passover arrives, and even though she cannot do the things she wants, Hannah learns that being the littlest Levine has its perks when she is the one chosen to ask the important four questions, a very special role only given to the youngest person at the table. Sandy Lanton writes an adorable book that serves double duty by naming several of the wonderful holidays of the year, as well as a subtle lesson that teaches that everyone has something special in store for them. The illustrations are bright and cute. It is a sweet book that teaches every member of the family is valued and even if they can't keep up,or are the youngest, they have an importance in the group.

The children's book gives a bit of information about Jewish holidays.I bought as a gift for a friend who is going to be a savta (grandma in Hebrew) soon. Her last name is Levine, so it is perfect!

While I agree with all the other positive reviews, I also think this sweet story speaks to shy children, walking them through the discomfort of being left out because they're "littlest", and then helping them rise to the occasion. There are many good messages here.

Great book for my great-nephew, who happens to be a Levine!

Hannah Levine is the youngest and littlest person in her family. Everyone else can reach the sink, hang succah decorations, and reach the high shelves in the kitchen cupboards. Her sister and brother ride the school bus, but Hannah is too young. As each holiday arrives, and Hannah is too little to do some of the preparations, she laments, “I hate being the littlest.” Each time, her grandfather responds that some day she will be glad she is the littlest. As Passover nears, the rest of the family is busy cleaning the house, cooking and setting the seder table. Meanwhile, Hannah and her grandfather quietly go to another room and work in secret. At the seder, when it is time for the littlest one to ask the Four Questions, Hannah proudly stands up and recites the “Mah nishtanah.”Young children will relate to this story since many of them are the youngest in their families or still too little to do everything their older siblings can do. The author cleverly proceeds through the major Jewish holidays from Sukkot to Passover. This makes the story a good choice for day schools and religious schools at Passover and also reinforces something about the other holidays that the children have learned about over the year. For adults, “The Littlest Levine” is a reminder that the purpose of the seder is to answer the questions asked by the littlest child. The illustrations are simple, clear and uncluttered. The pictures make it easy for young children to follow the story. There are only one or two sentences of text on each page, so the story is not too wordy and children do not get bored staring at the same picture for five minutes. This book is a winner for children ages 4-7.

Hannah Levine is the smallest member of her family. She is not able to do a lot of things that the other members of her family can do like close the oven, put plates on a high shelf, and light a menorah. Her grandfather keeps telling her that her day is going to be coming soon. Every evening after dinner she and her grandfather go off together so that he can teach her...and nobody knows just what exactly until the day comes when Hannah has her own special role that only the Littlest Levine can fill.Hannah's grandfather was there for her in the story while she was going through hard moments of not being able to do things other members of her family could. Her family members did allow her to do some things, just not the kind of things other members of her family could. He was also there to teach her something so she can have an important role in the family also; I liked how he created special time just for her to teach her, which probably made her feel special.I love how Kar-Ben books usually explain the main topic of the book after the story is over; in this case it was Passover. The description included the purpose of the Passover holiday, what is done during the holiday, and what is eaten.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a free copy of this book from Kar-Ben Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

This is really a great book. The "littlest Levine," Hannah, laments that she hates being the littlest because she cannot do things that grown-ups and bigger kids can do. Her grandfather lets her know that soon she'll be glad to be the littlest Levine. The story goes on in that theme for a few pages and then, suddenly, grandpa and Hannah start spending some time together reading a book. The book ends with Hannah realizing she's lucky to be the littlest Levine because she gets to say the Four Questions. The book, though, transcends Passover or any Jewish holiday. It teaches kids that even though the littlest cannot do some things, there's always a special place for the littlest one. The book's illustrations complement the story perfectly. You can't go wrong with this book.

Absolutely on Music: Conversations, by Haruki Murakami Seiji Ozawa

Review

“What most fascinates about Absolutely on Music is how it unlocks the challenging question of what makes for genius in the performance of music. . . . [It is] a book that opens a new side of [Murakami’s] authorial persona and that will open doors for people who want to love classical music. It is a quirky, oddly compelling book carried along by the smooth, laid-back rhythms of its relaxing conversations. Reading it, I found myself digging out pieces I hadn’t listened to in ages, engaged with a newfound appreciation. . . . Readable, accessible, highly entertaining, educational.” —Scott Esposito, San Francisco Chronicle“Fascinating. . . . Ozawa is a beloved figure, known more for his modesty, preparation and smiling-hippie looks than for breaking batons. In Absolutely on Music, he appears in conversation with his countryman, the renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. Their discussions are prompted by listening to recordings together and range from musical personalities to the nuts and bolts of running an orchestra. Mr. Murakami is a non-musician who is nevertheless quite well-listened. . . . Murakami stays in the background of these conversations, but his preparation and curiosity draw out Mr. Ozawa wonderfully.” —The Wall Street Journal“Absolutely on Music is an unprecedented treasure, valuable if for no other reason than that these conversations mark the first time that Ozawa has reflected at length on his 50-plus years of conducting. . . . Talking about music is like dancing about architecture, it’s often said, but what joy to watch these two friends dance. . . . One of this book’s central pleasures is that of watching a kind of translation at work. With an enthusiast’s brio, Murakami sallies forth with his idiosyncratic, often fanciful ideas about Ozawa’s music.” —The Guardian“Refreshingly honest and enthusiastic, a mental sampler from both the writer and the musician. . . . The subject matter veers and twirls, from the philosophy of education to the phrasing of a specific passage, to the bringing out of an inner voice. And perhaps therein lies the charm of this book—material that only a music wonk could love, some spicy ‘Real Housewives of Vienna’ type dish, intellectual probing of the most arcane musical subjects, and personal expressions of amazement and sheer joy.” —The Buffalo News   “Fascinating. . . . Enthralling. . . . What comes through in these conversations is the devotion both men feel for music; the degree to which every detail of a work matters to them; and the strength of their yearning to connect to great symphonies and concertos (and the composers who penned them).”—The Seattle Times   “Irresistibly seductive.” —Evening Standard  "A useful guide [that] is also about the way the concert hall's values of composition and rhythm can apply to any kind of creative life." —A.V. Club“Intriguing insights about the nature of music. . . . Deliberate and contemplative. In some ways, these conversations are High Fidelity for classical music fans.” —Publishers Weekly“A strange and delightful book. Murakami and Ozawa sit sipping hot hojicha tea, snacking on persimmons, and discussing in riveting detail works by Mahler, Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, and many other central figures in the history of Western music. . . . While he defers to Ozawa on technical matters, [Murakami] describes music with rich and suggestive metaphors and images that capture something essential about the spirit of the music.” —The Christian Science Monitor“Transcribed from conversations between the phenomenal Japanese author Murakami (who ran a jazz club in his youth) and magician-with-a-baton Seiji Ozawa, whom I remember fondly as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in my student days long, long ago? I cannot resist. For all your smart readers.” —Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal “Engaging. . . . [Murakami’s] knowledge of music is beyond impressive, as anyone who has read his novels already knows. He loves jazz, and one of the most interesting passages involves exchanges about blues in Chicago in the 1960s. Ozawa also declares a deep admiration for Louis Armstrong. . . . A work that general readers will enjoy and the musical cognoscenti will devour.” —Kirkus Reviews“The book shines as a deep exploration into how a conductor does his job and how performer personalities, logistical factors, and mundane bureaucracies can change an orchestra’s sound. . . . The book also dishes insider gossip on the greats: Leonard Bernstein is a anti-hierarchical mensch, while Glenn Gould is a fascinating ‘eccentric.’” —New Republic “A special book. . . . Look to this for insights into the broader world of music.” —The Worcester Telegram“Soaring conversations that are at times erudite, funny and deeply personal. . . . An important and engaging reflection on the career of a great conductor.” —The Providence Journal“Haruki Murakami loves music, from naming one of his most beloved novels Norwegian Wood (recalling the hit from The Beatles) to being the former owner of a jazz club in Tokyo. In these brilliantly illuminating conversations with his friend, the former conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa, these two creatives discuss the power of music. From pop-up orchestras to Brahms, these two insightful artists trace the way music has impacting them and society in general.” —BookRiot“[A] glimpse into the minds of . . . two maestros and their creative process. Never a stormy debate, the talks make sweet melodies that may linger on for many readers—especially book and music lovers. . . . This book is easy reading and music is ‘absolutely’ the winner.” —Otago Daily Times (New Zealand)

Classical music has scores with composers' notes and instructions; yet each performance, each conductor, each orchestra creates a different result. Soloists especially make a career out of their unique approach to the music. Novelist Haruki Murakami and conductor Seiji Ozawa, battling cancer, had a series of conversations on such subjects, as well as on Ozawa's life as a music director. This book, in translation, presents the interviews conducted over several years. Murakami happens also to be an avid collector of classical albums, CD and LP, and besides an extensive gathering of Ozawa's own recordings, he has multiple renditions of particular Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, and Berlioz pieces, which he played to further the discussion. Good familiarity of these core classical composers is necessary to appreciate the topics. No scores are presented but a website is given with samples of the compositions. For the classical music enthusiast, the easily and quickly read book provides insights into the art and also the duties of the conductor. Ozawa had training with Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan and subsequently has led numerous orchestras. I personally remember his youthful years as conductor of the San Francisco Symphony after Josef Krips. The entertaining and informative talks explain the ways of conducting and the interactions with musicians, and the extensive presentation on Mahler adds a new dimension to listening to his symphonies. Murakmai proved to be a deep listener, who while not a musician himself, has an ear for subtle differences in performances of soloists and the orchestra at large. Thus, the two men could delve into specifics. The magic of a brilliant performance remains a mystery, but the reader will have gained greater understanding of its components.

I am guilty of not finishing this book. The music conversations get a little drifty and rambling. It seems you'd almost have to be listening to the music at the same time and reading their discussions. However, I enjoyed the concept of the author interviewing the musician, and comparing their different passions and hard word. For example, each getting up at 4am to read scores or to write. There are some real gems too, like "a musician finds their flavor as they age." So True.

Murakami is also a writer that rarely fails; he has written the conversations he had with Seji Ozawa, definitely the most important figure on Western music from Japan. But the conversations also are full of love (for Ozawa), and understanding and sympathy. Ozawa comes out bigger...and so does Murakami. Both come out of the book well, very well.

Fascinating. never read anything like it. Murakami is such a fan, and such a good asker of questions; Ozawa is such a regular guy (considering he is a great conductor) and very good at reflecting on what he has played and what others have played. It is great that in this era we can listen to many of the performances mentioned without requiring an enormous record library. The book is entertaining and absorbing even for some one without extensive knowledge of classical music.

I've read most of Murakami's work, and I have great appreciation and respect for it. Although I have enjoyed this particular work, it's really going to be most appreciated by serious students of music, which I am not. Kind of beautiful insights into the minds of the real characters, but if you are looking for a novel, I point you toward Wind Up Bird, or Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, especially for anyone who has never read this author. He's wonderful and should get a Nobel someday.

What a remarkable lyrical open easy read. I have encouraged anyone who cares about classical music to read it. It's a gem!

Nice insight if you are classical music lover. Conversation is between two great maestros in two different art world which makes it even more intriguing.

Conversations between the Author and Maestro are lovely. They pull you in to the past the emotion, the feel and thought given to the music they discuss. Using my prime music, i listen to the music they talk about too. I love this little book. Note: Mr.Murakami stated that Maestro Maurice Peress was of Puerto Rican American decent.p 130. Paperback. I understood him to be of immigrant Jewish decent.
