Review

2015 Newbery Medal Winner 2015 Coretta Scott King Honor Award Winner * "This novel in verse is rich in character and relationships. . . . Poet Alexander deftly reveals the power of the format to pack an emotional punch." —Kirkus, starred review * "Alexander fully captures Josh's athletic finesse and coming-of-age angst in a mix of free verse and hip-hop poetry that will have broad appeal. . . . This will inspire budding players and poets alike." —Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review * "The poems dodge and weave with the speed of a point guard driving for the basket, mixing basketball action with vocabulary-themed poems, newspaper clippings, and Josh's sincere first-person accounts that swing from moments of swagger-worth triumph to profound pain." —Publishers Weekly, starred review * "Alexander has crafted a story that vibrates with energy and heat and begs to be read aloud. A slam dunk." —School Library Journal, starred review "Concrete poems that simulate on-court action, the novel's organization into "four quarters" (plus "warm-up" and "overtime") and a smattering of their father's 10 rules of basketball--as applicable to life as they are to the game--will draw in less avid readers, and the fully-fleshed characters and Josh's spellbinding wordplay will keep all readers riveted to find out if the brothers can mend the breach in their once iron-clad bond" —Shelf Awareness "An accomplished author and poet, Alexander eloquently mashes up concrete poetry, hip-hop, a love of jazz, and a thriving family bond. The effect is poetry in motion." —Booklist "The Crossover is destined to reach—and touch—readers who never gave basketball or poetry a second thought until now. It’s tough, muscular writing about a tender, unguarded heart." —BookPage "[Alexander]'s at the top of his poetic game in this taut, complex tale of the crossover from brash, vulnerable boy to young adult." —Washington Post "Since poet Alexander has the swagger and cool confidence of a star player and the finesse of a perfectly in-control ball-handler, wordplay and alliteration roll out like hip-hop lyrics, and the use of the concrete forms and playful font changes keep things dynamic."—Horn Book Magazine "Kwame Alexander’s sizzling, heartfelt story-in-verse gives readers that rich sense of SWISH! we feel when a basketball drops perfectly through a net. Quick timing, snazzy cadence, a wealth of energy and deep affection for sports, family and life in general – it’s all here, in these gripping scenes."—Naomi Shihab Nye, National Book Award Finalist “The characters of Kwame Alexander's verse-novel entered my heart, as it showed the many ways in which the basketball, the truth, love, and life cross over and between us.” —Marilyn Nelson, Newbery Honor winning author  "The Crossover is a masterful mix of rhythm and heart that tells the story of two brothers navigating the deep waters of love, loyalty, and championship play. Alexander’s verse is fluid and electric, poignant and wise, skillfully chronicling main character Josh’s tough lessons as he comes to realize that “true champions / learn / to dance / through / the storm.” —Joyce Sidman, Newbery Honor winning author   "Bold! Explosive! Yet still gently poetic. I love The Crossover. Everyone will." —Nikki Giovanni "Kwame Alexander's cadenced basketball novel is a gem of poise and grace. His players come alive with the precision and control of an orchestrated musical composition. The poetry of the telling rings through to the heart. The Crossover  crosses over as a gift to all ages." —Ashley Bryan, Two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner

I showed this book to my gifted 4th graders and the boys who previously showed very little interest in reading immediately loved this book. They loved the dust jacket, then they took that off and loved the texture of the book cover (which is like the skin of a basketball). Thank you, Kwame Alexander, for these hooks before they even opened the book. Then they loved that it was poetry (fewer words per page..."I'm on page 32!"), and they loved the first page - maybe the best first page ever written for a boy reader. These kids were immediately sucked into the story. They loved the dynamics between the twin brothers, and the confidence of the narrator. They loved the father's pride in his son and that the father's language and taste was cheesy and dated.I can't thank the author enough for writing something that sounds so real, so relevant, so current, for boys who want to recognize themselves and their families on the page. It's not easy for an adult to write authentically for children using current language and icons that appeal to children. The boys in my group didn't know all of the basketball stars in the book - I needed to tell them who Magic Johnson was, for example - but they are a bit younger than the intended audience.

The Crossover, a Newbery Medal winner, is unusual; it’s children’s lit in the form of poetry, yet with a definite story line. It’s about a junior high school kid, Josh (a/k/a Filthy) and his parents and twin brother, Jordan (J.B.). The book centers around basketball; the twins are basketball stars, and their father was an NBA-caliber player who played briefly in Italy. Their mother is a vice principal.I'm not the intended audience for this book -- I don't particularly like basketball, I'm well past school age (by a lot), and I'm not really all that fond of poetry -- so I had reason to suspect that I might not like this book. However, I'm an omnivorous reader, and appreciate good writing of all sorts, and by the end I found that I enjoyed it a lot. I do think it’s a rather strange choice for the Newbery, although it is very creative. So it’s a very different book, but the story itself is universal. I’m glad I read it.

I read another book, IA: B.O.S.S., by a talented author, John Darryl Winston, that had some basketball content and middle-grade boy friendships that I really enjoyed. Therefore, when I came across The Crossover, it intrigued me. The talented author Kwame Alexander did not disappoint. The book contains a tight plot that encompasses family, friendship, love, health, and more. Kwame accomplishes a difficult and ambitious masterpiece by telling a story in short rhythmic verses. Kwame also does a great job capturing the essence of brotherhood between twins, Josh and Jordan Bell, mingled with the complicated dynamics of being in junior high (Jordan falls in love with Sweet Tea, and Josh wants a sip.). This is a great book for junior high kids and older. It's an easy read with a touching story. I also love the difficult vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book.

Kwame Alexander's THE CROSSOVER (2014) is not a stereotypical basketball story. Rather, it is a universal story with educated, black characters of growing up, of family, and of love told in narrative verse (poetry). Having said that, Alexander does tackle some contemporary issues of black life: of driving while black, of the consequences for black men who do not regulate their temper, of poor diet and not seeking medical treatment. At its core, though, the story is about the love between twin brothers who think they are drifting apart as they go through puberty and the role that basketball plays in healing them through their obstacles. THE CROSSOVER is an engaging, emotional read that is ideal for those who love poetry, basketball, or may be reluctant readers.

I admit that I initially got this book because of two factors: one is that the author is a Virginia resident and the second is that the Kindle price was incredibly cheap, something that was likely done because the book won a Newbery Award. It's not a particularly long novel, but it's short length works in its favor because this is an exceedingly powerful book. The entire work is told in verse and it's beautifully done, as Alexander takes full advantage of the format to craft visually lovely free verse that truly leaps off the page. It's a book that's very much meant to be viewed, although part of me is curious to listen to the audiobook so I can experience how the narrator interpreted various portions of the book. What ultimately works best here is that the characters are all believable and best of all, there are no "bad guys" here. Even though we're really only given the perspective of one of the two brothers, it will be very easy for readers of all ages to interpret how either brother is feeling at almost any given point of the book- an element that I'm sure is going to be the focus of many, many school lectures.I can easily see this book becoming a staple of multiple classrooms and for good reason. It's amazingly well crafted and even better- it's fiction that will appeal to any age and any gender. This book deals with a lot of difficult topics, from growing up to family issues to various different things that just about every child will deal with when they're young and I whole heartedly recommend that parents read this book as well and discuss it with their children and heck, maybe even make up a few verses for themselves.

As a former librarian, I wonder what books children and young adults will read and enjoy. As the mother of a 13-year-old, I wonder what books will pull him away from his computer games. I believe that The Crossover by Keane Alexander is such a book. It is full of action and contemporary references, as well as realistic family dynamics. The poetry filled the book with movement and song; it is almost as if it gave flesh to the book. I wish there were more books with male protagonists like this in this age group. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to share it with my son.

Review

“Uncommonly smart and beautifully written . . . [Chris] Jennings’s sure grasp never falters. The result is a triumph of scholarship and narration: five stand-alone community studies and a coherent, often spellbinding history of the United States during its tumultuous first half-century. . . . Although never less than evenhanded, and sometimes deliciously wry, Jennings writes with obvious affection for his subjects. To read Paradise Now is to be dazzled, humbled and occasionally flabbergasted by the amount of energy and talent sacrificed at utopia’s altar. But then, as Jennings so memorably puts it, ‘Anyone nuts enough to try building heaven on earth is bound for a hell of his own making.’ ”—The New York Times Book Review   “Writing an impartial, respectful account of these philanthropies and follies is no small task, but Mr. Jennings largely pulls it off with insight and aplomb. Indulgently sympathetic to the utopian impulse in general, he tells a good story. His explanations of the various reformist credos are patient, thought-provoking and . . . entertaining.”—The Wall Street Journal“Thoughtful, measured, and surprisingly relevant.”—Chicago Tribune “As a tour guide, Jennings is thoughtful, engaging and witty in the right doses. . . . He makes the subject his own with fresh eyes and a crisp narrative, rich with detail. . . . In the end, Jennings writes, the communards’ disregard for the world as it exists sealed their fate. But in revisiting their stories, he makes a compelling case that our present-day ‘deficit of imagination’ could be similarly fated.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Chris Jennings is a natural storyteller, and his Paradise Now, a five-part chronicle of America’s nineteenth-century utopian dreamers and doers, is the most clear-eyed, sympathetic, and inspiring account I’ve read of this vital chapter in American history in decades. What sort of future did they want? The Shakers, Owenites, Fourierists, Icarians, and Oneidans asked and answered the question, each group in its own way.  Chris Jennings prods his readers to ask the question again—for ourselves.”—Megan Marshall, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life   “Jennings knows how to tell a story, and has the intellectual range to recover both the weirdness and wisdom of America’s brief bout with utopian illusions and ideals.”—Joseph J. Ellis, author of The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, 1783–1789   “In a perfect world, work will be irresistibly pleasurable. Women will have equal rights. Money and property will be shared, as will spouses. Or maybe sex won’t be allowed at all? Even better! And once the ice caps melt, the sea will taste like lemonade. Bliss! With good humor, a lively style, and a deep knowledge of the historical scholarship, Chris Jennings tells the goofy, heartbreaking tale of nineteenth-century Americans who believed they could bring about heaven on earth, and managed to live out futures that the rest of us haven’t yet reached.”—Caleb Crain, author of Necessary Errors   “Despite marked differences separating these utopian movements, Jennings prizes in all of them their distinctive—and utterly American—optimism in facing a future in which their adherents believed they would usher in a glorious new social order. . . . Readers who resent the constraints of a barren realism will value this deep-probing inquiry into the quest for new social possibilities.”—Booklist (starred review)   “Jennings proves an able guide to these groups. [His] comprehensive research makes for absorbing reading as he shows how different people attempted to find perfection and how they failed or succeeded.”—Kirkus Reviews

Although it's popular history, this is a serious book -- not superficial or disrespectful of its human subjects. There are some light-hearted passages but the narrative never becomes silly.I had heard of and knew a little about most but not all of these groups but there was plenty of interesting information I had not come across before -- such as how some of the groups were (so to speak) kin to one another. Today, of course, "socialism" is a boogeybear in the USA -- don't look at me, Europeans, I've no idea why that should be. So it is especially interesting to learn more about how some prominent Americans in the past saw it as a key element in the construction of utopia and the future of not only the USA but humanity.I knew some utopian-minded people in the 1960s whose experiments also fizzled out.American may have been a tabula rasa, of sorts, but alas human beings are not. Not then, not now.

“It was a time when the imminence of paradise seemed reasonable to reasonable people.” (Kindle Location 140)I tend to clump stories about “oddball” cultures, cults, communes, and collectives, under the heading of ‘extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds’...and am mostly fascinated by them. The outlandish stories of which we managed convince ourselves and each other never cease to amaze.Chris Jennings’s non-fiction, Paradise Now: The Story of America Utopianism, highlights five of the most popular and influential utopian movements of 19th-century America, and rises to the level of amazing. Chuck-full of insights, illumination, and enlightenment, about those exercises in wishful thinking; it both informs and entertains.Recommendation: Worth the price and the effort (it’s a bit exhaustive in places) just to learn of the concept of Bible Communism… As opposed to that godless Soviet kind, I presume. I was also surprised to learn that “Go west, young man,” Horace Greeley, himself, was so seriously involved with communalism movements. Eye opening.“Nobody risks inventing a new world if they like the one in which they live.” (Kindle Location 6965).“In a century and a half, the prevailing outlook has shifted from jubilantly millenarian to tepidly apocalyptic. None of these predictions are necessarily wrong, but compared with the unmeasured, action-inspiring optimism of the nineteenth-century utopians, it appears that we are experiencing a deficit of imagination.” (Kindle Locations 6999-7001)Random House Publishing Group. Kindle Edition 9,757 Kindle Locations, 512 pages.

If you really want to understand why socialism has such a difficult time being successful, read Paradise Now by Chris Jennings. I've long been a student of the Second Great Awakening (among other early 19th Century religious studies), and knew somewhat of the Utopian experiments of that era, but this book fully enlightened me! Excellent history of the movements during this time frame. My first interest was Charles Fourier, about who Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote an essay - I was taking a class in Emerson at the time when I came across his essay on "Fourier and the Socialist" -- of which Emerson highly disapproved, primarily because he believed in being totally "self-reliant" (also an long essay on that). The sections on the various groups such as the Shakers, Fourier and one of the more successful experiments - the Oneida Community -- are long enough to be books in their own right. Meticulously researched, excellent story telling, great read! Gives one a real feel for the various socialist experiments in the 1800s when Karl Marx was also making some inroads in that philosophy.

This took me several months to read because as I finished up each chapter....there was so much rich material and analysis left there....that I devoted some time with other references and books to answer questions I had. It is a remarkable book and full of interesting stories and lots of information. If you ever had a curiosity about utopias and how they fail....Chris Jennings takes you to several of these and lays out the basic facts. He also explains in great detail how each one came to fail (miserably) in the end. He is careful not to ridicule one particular religion or group....but he shows their weakness in planning. I would strongly recommend the book to amateur historians and college level students. If you are about to discuss utopias or address their fundamental nature....then you need to start with this book as your reference.

Besides the Shakers, I had never heard of any of these utopian societies before and found this book to give great depth to their ideas, how they got started, and what lead to their downfall. The narrative of each society is impartially written, which can seem like a feat given the implausibility of some of the ideas. I learned a great deal reading this book and was engaged throughout. It only took me about three days to read the entire thing because I was so engrossed.

This is a fascinating, in-depth look at the stories behind several utopian communities and the people who were inspired to start them. I don't read a lot of history, but I found this very hard to put down-almost a page turner! Some of the characters responsible for bringing the utopian dream to life are stranger than fiction, the events of their lives truly incredible. And, in case anyone is wondering, there are still communities like these in the U.S!

The author presents lots of information (much of it interesting) in a readable way.It would deserve more stars if it were less repetitious, more "sparkling" in its story-telling, and more vivid in sketching the societal context in which these groups arose.Despite my interest in this topic, I have stalled after the second or third chapter.

This a fascinating story of American utopias that I was only partially aware. It explains that communism arrived in America well before the Soviet Union tried to do it. And you will learn facts about of these communes that will probably surprise you. Including interesting ways of practicing birth control! A great read.

This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful things from this book. In addition to the fact that it has extraordinary formulas, yet it additionally separates the Instant Pot and clarifies basically all that you could need to think about it. The tips and diagrams are especially useful for somebody like me who is continually endeavoring to change over formulas to the Instant Pot. The book covers the majority of the elements of the Instant Pot and the formulas go from natively constructed yogurt to sheep and chickpea stew. By and by, I am infatuated with the no-blend risotto with lemon and peas. (This audit is currently making me hungry!) Add to all that clever clarifications and ravishing photographs and you have yourself one great book. Adore it! I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator.

Loved this cookbook! Very thorough directions. All the recipes I've made so far have all turned out great. You can't go wrong with this book.Great pictures. And directions are really clear and easy to understand. Excited to try a lot of these recipes. Recipes are perfectly made for instant pot which is the most modern and versatile kitchen tool nowadays.

Incredible cookbook. I discover the formulas down to earth and they've turned out well for us. Truly welcome the cooking diagrams toward the rear of the book. A larger part of the formulas that I have seen from other source have fixings like jars of soup or dry blends that I could never utilize. Different books likewise have such a large number of colorful fixings that most home cooks don't have close by. This book has such huge numbers of formulas that utilization genuine nourishment and fixings that I either as of now have available or would likewise use for different formulas. I have battled for a considerable length of time to figure out how to join good dieting into my way of life and with these formulas it appears to be so natural.

This book has so many recipes that use real food and ingredients; even it’s well organized in a way to easily find what you are interested in cooking. Last month I had purchased an instant pot pressure cooker and I was looking for some good sources to learn various relevant recipes that what I can try using my newly purchased pressure cooker. I have already tried several Instant Pot cookbooks and so far I found this book is far better than all other books that what I tried before. One thing I felt missing inside of this book is meal’s photography for each recipe. Picture always makes the recipe more live, so bounces of colorful & delightful pictures should attach inside of it. Anyways, I am still happy enough with the purchase, it's price was affordable when I found it & would like to check more cookbooks written by this author afterwards.

This book is a very good book. This book provide every guide line from beginning to end.In this book the author write really very good.I am a beginners that's why this book is more helpful for me.Those recipes are make so quickly and so easy.

Review

The majority of gardening books tell you what to plant and where and how to grow it. Few take you out into the garden and help you enjoy the spaces you worked so hard to create. That’s why I’m so delighted with C.L. Fornari’s latest book, “The Cocktail Hour Garden.” (Pam Baxter syndicated garden writer)The Cocktail Hour Garden gives a plethora of ideas for designing, planting and accessorizing your garden space to offer maximum enjoyment for those couple of hours when you can actually indulge in sitting down. Whether that is an hour before you start dinner with a calming cup of tea or like us, taking your wine glasses (and chocolate) over to the fire pit at dusk to watch the bats start to fly and the stars come out. C.L helps the reader evaluate their current garden and ask what each plant 'brings to the party’. (Karen Chapman Le Jardinet Designs)If you’re looking for an excuse to slow down and reconnect with nature ― whether meditatively solo or socially with friends and family ― you’ll find plenty of ideas to incorporate into your garden and your lifestyle. For me, the book served best as a reminder that gardens are meant to be enjoyed, not just worked in, and I resolved to spend more time sitting in mine, and inviting friends to join me in that noble endeavor more often. Cocktails are being shaken. Chair cushions are being fluffed. Here’s to the green hour! (Pam Penick Digging)[C.L.'s] tone is conversational, a charming invitation to join her for a cocktail and conversation at the end of the day. (Pat Leuchtman Commonweeder)Fornari has taken the term "green" to a whole other level with a book full of green things (i.e. plants) to festoon the area where we like to rest and enjoy beverages. Readers will discover abundant ideas for plant selection, furniture and hardscaping, attracting birds and pollinators and a whole section on edible plants for snacking and concocting beverages. (Peg Tillery The Kitsap Sun)

“In The Cocktail Hour Garden, C.L. Fornari explores the importance of the green hour, a time at the end of every day when the light shifts, and sounds and scents intensify. C.L. encourages us to put down our phones, laptops, and tablets, to slow down and take a deep breath. Whether you actually bring a cocktail into the garden is irrelevant. The important thing is to appreciate this special time of day, to make a connection with the natural world and the people you share it with. And C.L. can show you how to do just that, with or without an adult beverage!” – Ellen Zachos, Author of BACKYARD FORAGING, with a specialty in foraged cocktails."If C.L. Fornari did a rewrite of the phone book, I would want to read it and, especially, have her on my show to discuss it." (Mike Nowak The Mike Nowak Show)"The Cocktail Hour Garden reminds us that gardens are meant to be savored, and that there is no better place to enjoy the day's "closing ceremony" than our own backyard. Let C.L. Fornari be your clever and inventive guide to creating the perfect retreat for enjoying your evening cocktail and the life around you." – Amy Stewart, author of THE DRUNKEN BOTANIST: The Plants That Create the World's Great Drinks"What a fun concept for a book and what a great read it is! C.L Fornari invites us to join her for cocktails in the garden, where she introduces us to fun facts about all manner of subjects: plant-based drinks, crepuscular insects, evening illuminations, and scented, tactile and night-blooming plants, to name just a few. Enjoy!"– Julie Moir Messervy, Landscape Designer and author of Landscape Ideas That Work

I only glanced through this book before giving it to my son as a birthday present. He reported that his head exploded with ideas and I can image so from what I saw in my glance through. Ideas about lighting, plants, design...all things looking wonderful. C.L. has hit another home run. I've got some other people in mind who would love this as a present. Bravo C.L., you've done it again.

It was appropriate that I read this during the Memorial Day weekend. Filled with tips for creating an outdoor space that is both relaxing and nourishing, it's a book I'll refer to again and again, for plant ideas, for plant placement, for cocktail recipes (yes, it does have recipes!). So well-written it reads like a novel. And the photographs are stunning.

Given as a gift to a family who will be transforming their backyard into a "garden party". C.L. Fornari is a no-nonsense, expert gardener and she writes like she speaks. An enjoyable book

Very interesting C L. Great to read with many iideas on how to create a garden for the mellow time of day and improve on what you have. Color is a must especially when the low setting sun shines on the plant. Love the photos.

Brilliant, fun, informative, makes me want to hang in my garden & uncork the wine! C.L. Fornari is a gifted gardener & an excellent writer with a sense of humor; love her books!
