I purchased this book to accompany a set of Lewis Chessman I am giving my husband for Christmas. It tells the history of the set, where it is from, and includes great pictures. The original set was divided between the British Museum and the Scottish National Museum so the book makes a great reference as it discusses all of the pieces.

Loved reading this brief book on the Lewis Chessmen. However, the Kindle edition fails the illustrations: they're tiny and you can't zoom in. Also the illustrations, helpfully numbered as Figures, should be hot-linked to the text. Another issue with the Kindle Edition is that the Table of contents is very difficult to find. This is an issue in many Kindle editions.

This is pretty good. Clear photos of the chessmen, descriptions of them & their history without being too attached to a certain theory thereof. Fairly brief, to the point, & objective--just what I would hope to find in a book written by the museum curator.

Here is a beautifully-designed, great little book on the Lewis Isle chessmen and a slice in time of the cultural histories of Ireland and greater Scandinavia. If you only buy one book on these chessmen, this should be it.

I love this book. I loaned it out and I may have a fight on my hands to get it back. What a fascinating story. The only criticism I can think of would be the lack of pictures to correspond with the written descriptions. If they were in color, it would have been heavenly.

This is a most readable and interesting book of the Lewis Chessmen. It has a great section of description of the chessmen and this kindle edition is marvellous because one can magnify details of the chess pieces.

Nicely told historical tale of the mysterious, intriguing, and beautiful Lewis Chessmen. I especially liked the explanation of the "Berserkers"

Very interesting and informative. I love this chess set, so it was nice to know the history behind it.

This book made me excited to talk about Christmas again. I think modern Christians emphasize how Santa and gifts are not what Christmas should be about, but the gap of how Santa and the traditions came to be is left out.Thank you for reaching out and for Tero for putting together the coolest book I can't wait to gift for Christmas!

I got this as a gift for someone else, but read through it in about 20 minutes and enjoyed these possible explanations for our celebrations. The author states that he knows that what he is sharing may not be 100% accurate--but these stories make as much sense as any other stories you've heard. There are many sources to try to check out how accurate this protrayal may be, versus whatever you've known growing up--so check them all out.

I loved this book so much, I just mailed it to my sister and will buy another copy for me soon. The exchanges between dad and daughter, then, grand mom, are funny and, heart warming. The fact and fiction mix is fascinating, however, maybe it is all fact. Buy a copy and read it to decide. I bet you buy more copies to give as gifts! I am making my list now.

About the Author

C. C. Tsai is one of East Asia's most popular illustrators. His bestselling editions of the Chinese classics have introduced generations of readers to the wisdom of such luminaries as Zhuangzi, Sunzi, and Laozi. Born in Taiwan, Tsai now lives in Hangzhou, China. Brian Bruya is professor of philosophy at Eastern Michigan University, where he teaches Chinese and comparative philosophy. He has translated many of Tsai's books into English. Michael Puett is the Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History at Harvard University and the coauthor of the international bestseller The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us about the Good Life.

While not a collegiate textbook edition written by someone in some dusty library almost as old as the subject matter. It is a fresh approach as to how to make this material accessible to the casual reader.
