Review

“Thomas Jefferson. Pirates. And national security. This is how you make history exciting. I dare you to put this book down.” —BRAD MELTZER, bestselling author of The President’s Shadow “Reads like a fast-paced thriller but is actually a thoughtful account of America’s first foray into what has become a complex part of the world.” —GENERAL STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL (Ret.), author of Team of Teams “A riveting book of history that reads as though it were ripped from today’s headlines, and a must read for anyone seeking an understanding of the roots of U.S. foreign policy.” —ADMIRAL JAMES STAVRIDIS (Ret.), former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO; dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University “This is a well-told tale, and there are lessons aplenty about both diplomacy and warfare—with useful application to the challenges the United States faces in our own time.” —PROFESSOR LARRY J. SABATO, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics; author of The Kennedy Half-Century “Well written, nicely paced, and well documented. I thoroughly enjoyed this must read that brings to life a critical period in our nation’s history and shows the importance of a navy in our nation’s security.” —KIRK S. LIPPOLD, former commander of the USS Cole; author of Front Burner: Al Qaeda’s Attack on the USS Cole “No one captures the danger, intrigue, and drama of the American Revolution and its aftermath like Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger.” —BRAD THOR, bestselling author of Code of Conduct “A colorful, exciting, and historic account of an overlooked portion of American military history, and a wonderful tribute to the brave sailors and Marines who set a high standard for U.S. maritime operations.” —GENERAL JACK KEANE (Ret.), chairman of the Institute for the Study of War “A fascinating story of extraordinary courage and resolve, and a brilliant reminder of an early chapter of our country’s remarkable history.” —DONALD RUMSFELD “As a Navy SEAL you witness great acts of courage every day, but it’s easy to forget that the navy and Marines have been kicking ass right from their inception more than two hundred years ago. Count on Kilmeade and Yaeger to remind us of it with this swashbuckling adventure.” —MARCUS LUTTRELL, former Navy SEAL; author of Lone Survivor and Service “If you want to understand the deep historic roots of the 9/11 attacks and what it will take to win the war against today’s jihadists, you must read this book.” —DR. This represents a solid portrayal of the war against the Barbary pirates. Thomas Jefferson, early on in his career with the national government, had decided that paying off the pirates was not the best approach. He felt that the United States should consider a more muscular response. The Barbary countries preyed upon shipping from Europe, the United States, and others. Their desire was to receive money from these countries to prevent the piracy. The countries along the coast could be nasty--making slaves, essentially, of the captives. Some reviewers have suggested that there is a lesson here for dealing with radical Islam. This was not radical Islam: it was pirates out for profit. The question--How to deal with this? After a time, Jefferson's views became considered more seriously. The United States decided to pay for the development of a navy, which could--if the nation decided--take on the countries of northern Africa. One of the worst of these was Tripoli. The book does a fine job of describing the evolution of American policy toward the pirates. There were failures (the capture of the Philadelphia), there were successes (Stephen Decatur's destruction of the Philadelphia). The work of naval commanders such as Preble and Barron and the somewhat bizarre efforts of a diplomat, Eaton, to create a march on Tripoli by the leader's brother. Nonetheless, in the end, the Americans gained victory over Tripoli and overawed some of the other countries as well.Lessons of this effort are discussed at the close of the book.A fascinating analysis of the war against the Barbary pirates. . . .

I'm not just a romance reader! I love history and I really enjoyed this book. I looked up the Barbary pirates online and found a timetable to follow. The book went into more detail that I found very interesting. The United States had barely won their independence from England, when their sailing vessels, trading in the Mediterranean Sea were attacked by pirates from Tunisia, Morocco, & Tripoli (Libya,) The ships and crew members were seized and the men were forced into hard labor. The pirates asked for ransoms to be paid. After he became president, Thomas Jefferson, did not want to pay ransom. He was able to convince congress to build armed Navy ships to protect the trading vessels in the Mediterranean countries. There were two wars and America proved to Europe that they could defend themselves against the pirates and again after they won the battle against Great Britain during the war of 1812. It was after that war that they finally defeated the pirates for good.

This is a summary and analysis of the Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger book, Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History. This conflict, one of America's first as a fledgling independent nation, has been called America's first war on terror. Barbary pirates had taken to capturing sea vessels, disrupting trade, and enslaving seafarers and demanding a peace price to leave those ships alone (for ever decreasing periods of time at ever increasing prices) and ransom (at ever increasing prices) for the sailors. Europe's developed nations paid them off, but Jefferson knew that could not stand. After winning support at home, he built up a small but effective navy, and through it won a victory that established America's reputation as a strong nation able to defend itself and its interests abroad. The main points discussed are:1. The war with Tripoli, while often overlooked, was important in establishing America's reputation as a nation able to defend itself. This was especially critical so soon after the revolution as it warned European powers not to try to try to take over the states and turn them back into colonies.2. The pirates captured us ships and sailors, mistreating and sometimes killing them, for both ransom and for religious leaders. The US sailors were primarily Christian. The pirates were primarily Muslim. The two groups have a long history of animosity.3. Pirates disrupted and sometimes completely halted trade in the area, trade that was critical for the US to repay its revolutionary war debts and build its own economy. Some nations paid for safe passage, for as long as the pirates chose to grant it, but the US would not be able, nor willing, to keep that up for long.4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson disagreed on how to handle the pirates. Adams argues for peace. Jefferson for war. The points both made are fairly well laid out in this excerpt.5. The naval fleet, while small, was effective largely due to good leadership. This book does not spend much time on clashes or tactics, it being a small summary, but it does cover some of the more important leaders involved, such as Edward Preble.6. This conflict, over sea and over land via Egypt, served as a proving ground for the US. Again, specific battles are not detailed, but the efforts of William Eaton are discussed at length. He was a very interesting figure, and I plan to read more about him in particular.7. Data was kept carefully classified until ready to be acted upon. Actions against a captured US vessel or to install a new Tripoli leader were kept secret for many reasons. The excerpt author notes that "the incident has not made the pages of many history books, landing the plan in pseudo secrecy once again".8. At some points in the conflict, leadership proved ineffective due to intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Captain Richard Valentine Morris, for example, is discussed at length.I am of the opinion that history ought to be taught first from a high level, to get a sense of all the major events in broad brush strokes, just to get one's bearings. Then come down to this level, skimming quickly over the entirety of US history, or whatever history you're studying. Then get into the weeds with the details of major events. Most schools start in the weeds and students struggle to get perspective. I would recommend anyone interested in learning more about American history, or for parents who have children starting to study American history, gather up a good collection short works like these and go through them in chronological order. One of the things I most appreciate about these guides, especially in this work, is that the last section explains the author's credentials in the subject area.I received a sample in exchange for an honest review.

This is a readable account of the individuals and circumstances concerning the fledgling United States and the Barbary pirates. Engrossing narrative moves you through the years of frustrations and ineptitude of our early navy. Although my impression had been that the Marines had a major role in subduing the Mediterranean pirates, Kilmeade minimizes their contribution. Since the Marine hymn memorializes the Marine role - "From The Halls of Montezuma To The Shores of Tripoli" I had the impression there was more Marine action than portrayed in the book. Indeed, diplomacy was the primary focus, enforced by meaningful shows of force by our increasing and formidable naval forces. This book is worth your attention if you are interested in U.S. history, our early Federal governing body, Thomas Jefferson, et.al, and the beginning and subsequent growth of our Naval presence on the world scene.

This is a very nice little book of Chinese poetry. It is bilingual with the Chinese characters printed big enough for a beginner to actually read. If you are trying to learn Chinese I recommend this book. There is also lots of space for writing notes, and the poems are all relatively short. There are 28 poems by each of the two poets and for the most part their short classics are included. The translations are OK but not the best. Translation is incredibly hard. This poet translates line by line rather than word by word. The approach works more or less. For the absolute best translations of Li Bai I would pick David Young in his "Five Tang Poets" or the selections in "A sunflower Splendor". For Du Fu I prefer the translations by Burton Watson in his book "The Selected Poems of Du Fu." But other people might find the Watson versions a bit dry.All in all I find "Facing the Moon" a sweet and useful book.

Facing the Moon: Poems of Li Bai and Du Fu, feature translations of two of China’s most celebrated poets. They had a lasting impact on Chinese poetry throughout the ages, from classical sources down to Mao Zedong. The poems are by no means simple, declarative statements of harmony with nature or the Dao - despite the fog shrouded mountains on cover. They explore wrenching existential political, and family problems.Yet one can’t help but think of mist shrouded mountains, home to hermits in huts, when reading many of these poems. For westerners, there is the deep pull of this Chinese ideal of harmony – even when it is not truly there.

The works of these two ancient poetic voices stand tall and strong and have clearly stood the test of time. There is much tranquility and wisdom in their words. For this particular project, the traditional background music is a nice touch and I have thoroughly enjoyed repeated listenings. The only consideration I have for not giving five stars is regarding the narration. No disrespect intended to Mr. Holyoak, he does a fine job. It is just that, to my ears, his delivery feels a bit contrived.

This is classic Chinese poetry translated by a Chinese scholar with the rhyme patterns of the orriginal mandarin. The titling and language differ from the translations of American poets like Ezra Pound, but the poems are remain recognizable. A worthwhile read.

these poets were mentioned on a show about chinese culture. i gave this book to my tai chi teacher and some chinese friends. all were very happy with this gift.

good book and good translation

This brief book contains Keith Holyoak's translations of brief poems by two of China's most highly-regarded poets, who lived in the 8th century, during the Tang Dynasty. Holyoak's introduction and notes on translations both provide valuable context. The brevity and appeal of the poems drew me through them quickly. Too quickly, I think. They deserve re-reading on a later occasion, or on multiple occasions. They use the specific to evoke the universal: loneliness, love, loss, friendship. I note that the Chinese originals are shown alongside the English translations. While I do not read or speak Chinese, I found this fitting.

Lovely book of poetry even for those who are not overly into it.

From Booklist

A bucolic retelling of “The Ugly Duckling” gets derailed when the book is invaded by a hungry crocodile. “What’s he doing in this book?” asks the red-capped ugly duckling. From there, things get meta. The crocodile begins gobbling up certain letters, leaving the duckling to shout, “St p! Mr. Cr c dile!” After the croc begins snarfing up entire sentences, the duckling implores the reader to rock the book from side to side—good, now the crocodile is asleep. But after the duckling draws a tutu on the crocodile with a crayon, the green interloper tries to run away, only to smash up against the side of the page. Is there any other way out? Yes—and it’ll take a little audience participation to bring it about. This most recent entry in the self-relexive picture-book canon finds a comfortable niche between the brain-busting of Mordicai Gerstein’s A Book (2009) and the cute literary investigation of Mo Willems’ We Are in a Book! (2010). A clever way to get kids thinking about the infinite possibilities of stories. Preschool-Grade 1. --Daniel Kraus

Debut author Bromley stumbles with the wrapup to his self-referential story, closing with a weak “Where do you think he’ll turn up next?” Regardless, O’Byrne’s crocodile is a personable antihero—she underscores his disruptive nature by drawing him in a brash, aggressive style that contrasts mischievously with her soft, storybook duckling—and her integration of typography and action is consistently ingenious.—Publishers WeeklyThis is so engagingly interactive that it would make a fabulous app, and even in book form it will appeal to kids who relish the game-playing aspect.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksA clever way to get kids thinking about the infinite possibilities of stories.—Booklist OnlineBy breaking the barriers, cleverly crafted books such as OPEN VERY CAREFULLY challenge and engage the reader in a special way—and amuse parents at the same time.—BookPageBright reds and yellows, active line work, and plenty of white space create high energy and allow for the croc to interact with text and with the audience. This bold book will be effective as a group read-aloud, but some of the jokes will work well one-on-one, allowing children time to explore what the crocodile does with story and text.—School Library JournalPure fun.—Midwest Book Review

My 4 year old grandson adores this book. The general concept is that the narrator is reading a different, more traditional, story when... a Crocodile appears! Now... How do we usher him out of our story? This involves several interactive ploys that keep a youngster excited and interested, For the most part the book is easy to read aloud with the sort of rhythm and voice range that appeals to little ears. We had to arrive very early for Pre-K one morning and brought books to fill the time. We were reading this when the others began arriving and I quickly acquired a rapt audience. My grandson's First Steps therapists stressed anticipation and repetition as being important learning tools and there's certainly anticipation here. He's usually yelling 'It's a crocodile!' before I can turn the page. The crocodile escape gimmick is a physical hole in the back of the book. This feature beckons to little fingers so you might consider re-enforcing the opening as it will likely get bent and tear.

This book has been a total hit with our kids. Cute pictures and they love the storyline! Their favourite part is at the end, when the crocodile bites through the back of the book. There is actually a hole at the back, with zig zaggy edges, that you can literally see through the back of. They love this feature! Having said that, however, there are two things that could be done to improve it. My 7 yr old has suggested that it would be even better if the back of the book shows the crocodile coming out of the book. The last page shows his back end still in the book and it's obvious that the croc has gone out the back of the book, but there is no front end to the croc on the back cover. I agree with my son, that it would be even cuter if the front half of the croc was pictured climbing out of the back of the book, through the hole. Also, the last page, which has the bite out of it should either be reinforced or made out of stronger material, as since there is a hole in the page, it is asking for accidental rips and tears. The kids will want to put their fingers and hands through the hole, and our was slightly torn after only one day. If the edges at the hole were stronger, this could be prevented. The kids also love the part where the croc gets annoyed at having a tutu drawn onto him...very cute book and we highly recommend!

The presentation, and art, in this offering are terrific. Watch the eyes of your four year old as s/he shakes the book one way, or tilts it another as invited to rid the book of the crocodile! The playful "tension" of the story is delightful for even the very young...after all, this is a very "un-scary" crocodile. I might quibble a bit with his gobbling up of letters and words which might, without some artful reader supplement, be a bit thin for a young ear. I'd have given the book an extra star save for the weak and anti-climatic ending...definitely a whimper not a bang. Way too bad because until the last page the young listener is glued...and then? The end.

This book is so cute and reminds me of "There's a Monster at the End of this book," (one of my old favorites!) It is interactive and comical. My daughter loves it!

It was an ok book. It really did not engage my 4 year old or myself.

My daughter likes this book. It is definately a "unique" story, but very family friendly.

this is our second copy my daugter loves it

Great for a read aloud! Kiddos loved it!! LOTS of writing activities you can do after as well!!
