The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique, by Jeffrey Morgenthaler Martha Holmberg

Review

"...my favorite drinks book of the year is The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique. Mr. Morgenthaler, a well-regarded Portland, Ore.-based bartender and blogger, notes that a great cocktail requires a combination of three elements: recipe, ingredient and technique. He admits that the first two have been well-plumbed in existing books, then lasers in on the third. Just learning how to make his ingenious but simple "MacGyver Centrifuge" with cheesecloth and a salad spinner to filter fruit juices is nearly worth the cover price." - Wayne Curtis, The Wall Street Journal"Jeffrey Morgenthaler is our kind of guy; an obsessive practitiioner of lost arts and an inventor in his own right." - from Playboy"An accessible but sophisticated primer that could render the rest of the cocktail library obsolete." - Library Journal

There's "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer, to learn about being truly hospitable. There's "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" by David Embury, to learn about the theory and practise of mixology. And now there is "Bar Book" by Jeffrey Morgenthaler*.I've trained about 60,000 bartenders in 60-odd (sometimes very odd) countries in the last 15 years. I've founded Europe's largest bar school as well as an award-winning craft cocktail bar, and if I could go back in time I would give Jeffrey's book to each and every student I've ever had. As it is, I will give it to every student I have from now on.Jeffrey's research, insight and experience have resulted in a book that will shave years off the time needed to master drink making, leaving more time for professionals to concentrate on creativity and hospitality, and for interested Cocktailians** to concentrate on seducing your neighbours' wives (and husbands) at the excellent cocktail parties you will henceforth be able to effortlessly throw. This is where you click "buy now". Now!* Disclosure: Jeffrey is a friend and contemporary of mine, but such a cheap, thoughtless bastard that not only did he not think to offer me a financial inducement in return for a positive review, I even had to buy my own copy of this annoyingly excellent book.** Cocktailian = cocktail equivalent of a foodie.

I recently set up a home bar and have been looking for guides that would show the ins and outs of preparing quality cocktails. There seem to be a lot of books out there with recipes, but none of them really get down to the fundamentals of technique. I have even looked into professional bar-tending classes, but they seem to inconvenient and I suspect they focus as much on customer issues and how to crank out the drinks. I typically only have one drink a night: I want it to be a good one! This book truly delivers. It is beautiful with magnificent photos, it's the right size to sit on a bar shelf and, most importantly, it really gets down to the details of technique. A good example is the chapter on shaking...About a week ago (before buying this book) I cracked the glass part of my Boston Shaker when trying to release it. It made me realize that I really had no idea how to deal with shaking a cocktail in general. Then along comes Morgenthaler's chapter on shaking. He starts by listing (in detail) the different shakers and how they can be used. He describes (in detail) the brands and qualities of the various shakers and what characteristics you should look for in each type (heavy gauge vs. light gauge steel for example). He then continues with how to grip the Boston Shaker (in detail - are you seeing a pattern yet?) and even how to practice shaking (he has his trainees use rice in the shaker). In short, this is EXACTLY the sort of information I had been looking for. The book is all about the technique that creates a truly wonderful cocktail. Yes, it includes some great recipes (more can be found on the author's blog) and, yes, it has great pictures and the explanations are well written. But most of all it gets down to the details that you could probably only get if you had a pro working alongside you.I suspect that there is a lot of great information in this book for even for professional bartenders, but it remains very accessible.I can guarantee that the pages of my copy will soon be stained with various bitters, spirits and juices.

Really interesting to hear the ins and outs of bartending from a pro. Lots of great recipes and procedures to make syrups, compound syrups, infusions, tinctures etc etc. Required reading if you want to get a job tending a bar but very heplful for anyone that wants raise the level of their home/party giving skills.

Very informative in that he not only explains how things are done, but also, why. Even if you just like an occasional quality cocktail or you're a home enthusiast this book will expand the scope of your understanding & knowledge into the mysteries of mixology. To use an analogy he goes from the fundamental of how to boil water into how to prepare a 5 star meal. Great read.

My husband is getting into craft cocktail making as a hobby. This book discusses the technique, tools, and products best used to make a quality cocktail, not just recipes. It has some recipes but isn't all inclusive. He got it for Christmas and has enjoyed reading, learning, and making us some delicious libations. So much better than a generic "how to" book.

This is a terrific, overall book about how to bartend, in plain language, but with the expertise of a seasoned pro behind the very interesting (and knowledgeable) explanations of techniques, with recipes - many that improve on the classics. (Based on years of bartending experience by the author.) Big thumbs up for this book!

This book is unlike any other bar book I own. Talk about going into really great detail on things we take for granted (e.g. best ways to juice a lemon, best drinkware to heighten cocktail's aroma/flavor). If you're a "dinner party bartender", you'll love this book. I have a great bar down in my basement and I've been buying expensive alcohol only to *ruin* them by not respecting the tools, glasses & garnishes with which we take a good drink and make it a great drink.

I like that this book gives more background information on ingredients and details on methods, rather than just being a collection of recipes. I can find recipes easily online, but I really wanted to learn the basics of what tools to get, how to use them, and what techniques to study. I learned a ton from this book.

Good guide

I always choose Lonely planet as it had been accurate and helpful in my trips and to plan them beforehand.

Pretty helpful as overview to Bahamas diving opportunities

There's some good things about this book: in typical Lonely Planet style you've got great general travel information for the area (which if I really wanted, I'd buy a general travel book). It does also cover a large number of sites - though is still far from comprehensive. And it has some nice additional information occasionally through the book. Two main peeves though. And they're killers:- Each description is a paragraph, or two at most. You can't tell me very much about a dive site in so few words.- There are no maps / diagrams for specific dive sites (just area overview maps) - a dive guide fails totally without these. It's a pretty book, but to be any use you need to include maps and more detail per site (if this was done it could be forgiven for not being totally comprehensive). In short, it's nice, but it's no use as a tool for researching a dive holiday. What'S further is I now own two of these (Red Sea and Bahamas) - I certainly will not buy another.

This book by the author of "Home: A Short History of an Idea" (1986) is a more subjective and less disciplined examination of that same topic. Professor Rybczynski uses his experience as an immigrant trying to "fit in" as a lens for looking at what in means to build ones own home. The skeleton of this story is the author's own decision to build a shed to which he can retreat on weekends (for more on weekends, read the author's "Waiting for the Weekend," 1991) and build a boat he can sail away in. At some point the shed becomes more of a barn and then, when he finally abandons his plan to build a boat, it becomes a permanent home for himself and his wife. For me, the book is less about architecture, the act or craft of building, and more about morphing and the undpredictable ways life unfolds. Taken in that vein, Rybczynski's story can be appreciated as a spiritual journey with many sidetrips and gentle awakenings. He is self-critical, but not self-deprecating. And he infuses his tale with enough humor to keep the reader interested without taxing credibility. I especially enjoyed his description of his wife, Shirley, who does some morphing of her own. At the beginning (when the couple was building a mere boathouse), she is little more than an extra pair of hands; when the couple decides to make the structure they have been building into their home, Shirley suddenly becomes a full-fledged "client," full of opinions and demands.Although, Rybczynski describes several impressive architect conceived and built houses (such as Wright's Fallingwater and Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth house), it is the houses built by their owners that he most celebrates--Mark Twain's home in Hartford, Connecticutt, Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford, Robert Lewis Stevenson's Vailima in Samoa, artists Carl and Karin Larsson's much documented Lilla Hyttnas in Sundborn, Sweden, and Carl Jung's home in Bollingen, Switzerland. "It is no coincidence," writes Rybczynski, "that Stevenson, Scott, Clemens, Larsson, Castrejon, and I were less than forty years old when we built our homes.... The process of building, for all of us, was a process of installing ourselves in a place, of establishing a spot where it would be safe to dream. We had to be old enough to recognize the particularity--and limits--of our dreams, but not too old to believe in them....My house had begun with the dream of a boat. The dream had run aground--I was now rooted in place." (pp. 190, 193)

Great!

The book provided some history and foundation of architecture in an enjoyable manner. I've become a fan of this author.

Great service…great book

Beautifully written and full of wisdom about what it means to build your own shelter.

I loved this book because it showed how a homebuilder's view can change in the process of constructing a building. Mr. Rybczynski's original quest to build a boathouse, worthy in itself, expanded to construct a home for he and his wife. I liked the exterior of the completed building because it was compact, simple, yet had sufficient flourishes to establish itself as a work of architecture rather than a clone of many similar sized small houses. My wife and I built our house and can affirm that building your own home is a very satisfying experience.

this refers to the 1989 Penguin Edition-Asa mechanical engineer in my late thirties I started to know what architecture was all about and its relation to design. It turns out that its not easy to have a comprehensive introduction to the theme. Fortunately, Through Amazon and its reviews and suggested I bought this wonderful book and I was captivated, not only by the perspective it gives on the architecs work, but also on the insight about design it provides.

This book, an extension in action of the literal expressed in the earlier historic study "Home," takes notion to application in the form of constructing a boat house. Interwoven into the text is an historic overview -albeit briefly- of seventeenth to twentieth century architecture (mies, le corbisier, wright), the elements, motifs, and functional aspects associated with the broader field. Along the way one has the sense the author is being contemplative (although not digressive) in the approach toward considering all phasesof development; a sometimes apt metaphor for the arrival at both the functional and practical. The book itself is well arranged, the letterhead holding sturdy upon the page. It is compact, holds well in the hand and is highly accessible: one could easily read in one sitting. Of interest for anyone engaged in projects in addition to their immediate structure.

Amazon.com Review

A Severe Mercy, by Sheldon Vanauken, is a heart-rending love story described by its author as "the spiritual autobiography of a love rather than of the lovers." Vanauken chronicles the birth of a powerful pagan love borne out of the relationship he shares with his wife, Davy, and describes the growth of their relationship and the dreams that they share. As a symbol of their love, they name their dream schooner the Grey Goose, "for the grey goose, if its mate is killed flies on alone and never takes another." While studying at Oxford, Sheldon and Davy develop a friendship with C.S. Lewis, under whose influence and with much intellectual scrutiny they accept the Christian doctrine. As their devotion to God intensifies, Sheldon realizes that he is no longer Davy's primary love--God is. Within this discovery begins a brewing jealousy. Shortly after, Davy acquires a fatal illness. After her death Sheldon embarks on an intense experience of grief, "to find the meaning of it, taste the whole of it ... to learn from sorrow whatever it had to teach." Through painstaking reveries, he comes to discover the meaning of "a mercy as severe as death, a severity as merciful as love." He learns that her death "had these results: It brought me as nothing else could do to know and end my jealously of God. It saved her faith from assault. ...And it saved our love from perishing." Replete with 18 letters from C.S. Lewis, A Severe Mercy addresses some of the universal questions that surround faith--the existence of God and the reasons behind tragedy. --Jacque Holthusen

I read A Severe Mercy when it first came out in 1977, and it impacted me deeply. I loved everything about it, his skill as an author and poet, his love for Davy and their growth together, his friendship with CS Lewis, and the profound way he shared his faith story. I wrote Sheldon a letter when I first read the book, and received a wonderful letter back, and it remains something I cherish. In the mid 1990's my wife and I went to Oxford, enjoyed evensong, and ate and had a couple of beers at The Eastgate, where Vanauken and Lewis had often met. Though I'm sure it's changed by now, at that time the decor was pleasingly dated. I've shared this book with many people over the years and haven't ever talked to anyone who didn't love it. Some years later Vanauken wrote that every book is at it's core a letter to friends, and his book more than most. It's nice to read it in that spirit, as he found joy in sharing his personal story with you, his friend.

Absolutely phenomenal book. Aside from being beautifully written and a great story, the book gives some great insight into the difficulties that accompany not only the loss of a spouse/loved one, but also the accompanying struggles with faith. Important for pretty much anybody living in our time. Highly recommend it.

I read this at the suggestion of a friend who knows me as an insatiable devotee of C.S. Lewis. Mr. Lewis is a great and interesting writer, but the various editions of this book with jackets screaming "18 LETTERS BY CS LEWIS (oh, and some book by a guy named Vanauken)" do it a terrible disservice. Vanauken's love story with his wife is profoundly interesting, their acquaintances in America and England fascinating on their own merits, and Vanauken's elegy to his wife is a heartbreaking masterpiece of catharsis. By most critical accounts, he was never again as great a writer as he is here, but A Severe Mercy stands firmly on its own as both great autobiography and spiritual memoir.

Title: A Severe MercyAuthor: Sheldon VanaukenPublished: 1977Year I read it: 2012One sentence summary: Vanauken's autobiographical narrative of the deep love he and his wife developed; their adventures all around the world, leading them to Oxford; their journey into faith, with the help of Oxfordian friend, "Jack" Lewis; and of their loss, the severe mercy.Interesting fact: It contains 18 of Vanauken's letters from C. S. Lewis.Three reasons to read it:- This is honest-to-goodness one of the best love stories I've ever read! The depth, the romance produced from self-sacrifice (and common love for literature), is just astounding. And it's so refreshing to hear a romance from the man's perspective! Loved that beginning.- Oxford! This book captures Oxford of the '50's - which really hasn't changed much. See below for some of the best explanations of life in that University town.- The pain Vanauken goes through - and the faith with which he faces tragedy - are far more than "tear-jerking" or "heart-breaking." None of those cliche's will do. This book touches something far deeper. One reason you maybe shouldn't:It has very, very sad parts.Great quotes:Love is the final reality; and anyone who does not understand this, be he writer or sage, is a man flawed of wisdom. We saw self as the ultimate danger to love, which it is.Coming to England was like coming home, coming to a home half-remembered - but home."That's what Oxford is, a place to talk about everything...""This, you know, is a time of taking in--taking in friendship, conversation, gaiety, wisdom, knowledge, beauty, holiness--and later, well, there'll be a time of giving out... Now we must store up the strength, the riches all that Oxford had given us, to sustain us after. She stood there, Oxford, like a mother to us all with her hands heaped with riches."I tended, indeed, to feel that God Himself dwelt in Oxford, His holy city, where He could hear the bells. He had been wont to despise emotions: girls were weak, emotions–tears– were weakness. But this morning he was thinking that being a great brain in a tower, nothing but brain, wouldn’t be much fun. No excitement, no dog to love, no joy in the blue sky– no feelings at all. But feelings– feelings are emotions! He was suddenly overwhelmed by the revelation that what makes life worth living is, precisely, the emotions. But then– this was awful!– maybe girls with their tears and laughter were getting more out of life. Shattering! He checked himself, showing one’s emotions was not the thing: having them was. Still, he was dizzy with the revelation. What is beauty but something is responded to with emotion? Courage, at least, is partly emotional. All the splendour of life. But if the best of life is, in fact, emotional, then one wanted the highest, the purest emotions: and that meant joy. Joy was the highest. How did one find joy? In books it was found in love– a great love… So if he wanted the heights of joy, he must have it, if he could find it, in great love. But in the books again, great joy through love always seemed go hand in hand with frightful pain. Still, he thought, looking out across the meadow, still, the joy would be worth the pain– if indeed, they went together. If there were a choice– and he suspected there was– a choice between, on the one hand, the heights and the depths and, on the other hand, some sort of safe, cautious middle way, he, for one, here and now chose the heights and the depths.

While first reading this book I thought it was a story of two young selfish people. But that is what most of us are when we begin life independently of parental figures. Then it began to unfold to a sweet love story. Comfortable and truthful (they thought) with one another. Then they "discovered" God. Truly a wonderful book. I am glad that Sheldon decided to put their story to paper. So many hours spent thinking about "things". I will cherish this book and perhaps reread.

I heard about this book on Easter Sunday 2010. My Pastor was preaching and used is as an illustration. I listened to him and wondered what kind of strength would be required for someone to lose his/ her spouse. Little did I know that that morning I had become a widow myself... my husband of 4 yrs had committed suicide. This book made me reevaluate my attitude toward priorities and the place of God in my life. It got me through the most difficult time of my life. The author pours out his heart to us, it is as if you are there, with him and Jean, basking in the love they feel for each other. The events after they met Lewis are vividly described and give the reader a feel of that athmospere from times past. The book was written in times where the publishers were very selective of what would be published, the editing is superb. I recommend it to anyone, it is a book about love, life and the place of God in both.

What a thought provoking memoir.I became a Christian after many years of skepticism and doubt that this religion had anything to offer me.However, I was to discover a God more than capable of handling my questions. And this is what this book demonstrates through a beautiful story of love put to the ultimate test.Believers and skeptics alike, read this book if you are wrestling with the big issues of life - our marvellous Creator offers you the same patient consideration he has offered to countless thousands before.

TheSmartMama.com, 3/6/10 “I thought I would talk about two of the books that most moved me to do more, to do better, to live a less toxic life. The first is Rachel Carson's Silent Spring and the second is Sandra Steingraber's incredibly powerful Living Downstream: An Ecologist's Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment …Why these two books? Because they point out something very, very telling about the link between the lives we live and the cancers we get.”The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener, Spring 2010 “Steingraber presents a clear, cogent and convincing case for the environmental roots of cancer.”Gaia Fitness blog, 3/11/10 “Living Downstream is a very well-written book by Sandra Steingraber about the status of the world in which we live and it's affects on our lives. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend picking it up. It will likely give you a whole new perspective on the health of our world and us.”Ithaca Journal, 4/2/10 “A part-memoir/part-scientific treatise about her battles with cancer, and the environmental roots of many cancers.”Ithaca Times, 3/31/10 “Part analysis and presentation of available scientific information on the links between cancer and the environment and part memoir.”The Sun, January 2009 “Steingraber's ability to meld literary prose with complex scientific information has made her a best-selling author. Like her hero Rachel Carson, whose 1962 book Silent Spring led to the ban on the pesticide DDT and kick-started the grass-roots environmental movement, Steingraber somehow finds language beautiful and compelling enough to seduce readers to sit through a science lesson.”The Ithacan, 2/12/10 “Jeff Cohen, director of the Park Center for Independent Media, said that Steingraber's expertise in writing and biology as well as her personal experience created an unbelievable combination. ‘What she's brilliant at—almost in a league of her own—is mixing personal passionate stories with totally comprehensive and accurate science,' he said. ‘It's not easy to do, it's not easy to make complex scientific issues interesting, but no one does it better than Sandra Steingraber.'”Tuscon Citizen, 4/20/10 “In this second edition of a contemporary classic, Steingraber, a cancer survivor, biologist, and mother, builds a convincing case that many cancers can be prevented through environmental change…This spare, beautifully written book, originally published in 1997, presents a passionate, hopeful view, asserting that it's a good thing that the environment has such influence over cancer because, she insists, we can do something about it.”InfoDad.com, 4/29/10 “A book with a strong personal as well as societal orientation…The book's language is more plainspoken and thus more accessible than that of many other books warning of environmental hazards.”Energy Times, May 2010 “Beautifully written, Living Downstream blends [Steingraber's] own tale—a cancer diagnosis at age 20—with an environmental detective story…If you've ever wondered about the link between pollution and cancer, read Living Downstream.”Ms., Spring 2010 “In the film, as well as in her memoir of the same title, Steingraber moves to break the silence about chemical carcinogens by doing what Rachel Carson couldn't: use her own diagnosis to prove a scientific point.”

From the Inside Flap

With this eloquent and impassioned book, biologist and poet Sandra Steingraber shoulders the legacy of Rachel Carson, producing a work about people and land, cancer and the environment, that is as accessible and invaluable as "Silent Spring--and potentially as historic. In her early twenties, Steingraber was afflicted with cancer, a disease that has afflicted other members of her adoptive family. Writing from the twin perspectives of a survivor and a concerned scientist, she traces the high incidence of cancer and the terrifying concentrations of environmental toxins in her native rural Illinois. She goes on to show similar correlation in other communities, such as Boston and Long Island, and throughout the United States, where cancer rates have risen alarmingly since mid-century. At once a deeply moving personal document and a groundbreaking work of scientific detection, Living Downstream will be a touchstone for generations, reminding us of the intimate connection between the health of our bodies and the integrity of our air, land, and water. "By skillfully weaving a strong personal drama with thorough scientific research, Steingraber tells a compelling story....Well worth reading."--Washington Post

It is only rarely that I have purchased a book based completely on hearing of seeing an interview of the author. That is, however, the pathway that led me to the second edition of Sandra Steingraber's incredibly powerful narrative "Living Downstream". The interview, conducted by TV Host Bill Moyers, was aired this year just before Earth Day 2013, and in it Steingraber discussed her reasons for joining in the protest against "fracking" which led to being jailed.Since this is a second edition of a book published originally over a decade ago, there are of course numerous updates. All of them, however, simply emphasize that the facts and experiences the author shares are becoming increasingly critical. Steingraber, born and brought up on an Illinois farm, was diagnosed at the age of 20 with bladder cancer. She survived the initial bout, and became a PhD biologist. She has since dedicated her life to the environmental, genetic and biochemical study of cancer, and the resulting environmental activism that is focused in her books and civil actions such as the protest discussed in the Moyers interview. This particular narrative acknowledges the extreme impact that Rachel Carson's famous book "Silent Spring" had on Sandra's own developing activism and deep concern about the across-the-board impact of runaway pollution of all sorts on the health of our planet and the beings inhabiting it.Again, though, I find myself grateful for my own organic chemistry background, because a great deal of Steingraber's discussion goes into the somewhat technical details of the main carcinogenic pollutants that result from insecticide and herbicide use, chemical, paper and plastics manufacturing, fossil fuel extraction and burning, hazardous waste storage and trash incineration, and so on. She really leaves no stone unturned in developing the case that our total scientific approach has been completely backwards, based on completely useless attempts to identify individual carcinogenic effects of a few specific toxicants when in fact there are thousands of materials which not only may be harmful in and of themselves, but whose potential hazards multiply exponentially when they are in concert with one another. The Afterword of Steingraber's extraordinarily important book, added of course to the Second Edition, focuses on the "Precautionary Principle" articulated by "an international group of scientists, lawyers, farmers, governmental officials, physicians, urban planners, environmental thinkers, and others" who gathered in 1998 at Frank Lloyd Wright's Wingspread house in Racine, Wisconsin. She cites in its entirety the Statement issued by this group, the last two paragraphs of which deserve to be printed in bold face across every argument about the pros and cons of environmental issues:"Therefore, it is necessary to implement the Precautionary Principle. When an activity raises threat of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically. In this context, the proponent of an activity, rather than the public, should bear the burden of proof."The process of applying the Precautionary Principle must be open, informed and democratic and must include potentially affected parties. It must also involve an examination of the full range of alternatives, including no action."Steingraber's extraordinary writing, as well as the activism with which she supports her thesis, bears powerful witness to the importance of the current issue of combatting with all our strength the insane rush of our profit-mongering economy to destroy our earth and all the life that lives upon it.

I enjoy all of Steingraber's books, and this one is no exception. I even have others who picked it up and flipped through it ask if they can borrow it. Very eye opening look at what is all around us and seemingly inescapable, yet it doesn't fill you with panic and alarm. I like to know the why's and how things work together, this explains it in an easy to understand and enjoyable storytelling fashion.

Before I read this book I had read and loved Silent Spring, and I always wondered what the current status of man-made chemicals was in our country. This book is a must-read for not just scientists, but anyone that could be affected by artificial chemicals (spoiler - it's everyone). It's shocking, distressing, extremely informative, and yet inspirational. One of the best qualities of this book is Steingraber's explanation for why determining the cause of cancer is so complex. Interweaving her own personal story only made this book more compelling.

I think everyone should read this book. It's hard to put into words how beautiful and powerful this book is to me. It is heartwrenching and extremely illuminating but also very warm and touching. She has managed to describe some very dense subjects and hard science in a way that both touches the heart mind. Very well written. A uniquely fair and equitable perspective.

Steingraber has a wonderfully accesible writing style, and I was duly impressed by the way she was able to weave her personal life experience into a work about the environmental dangers we are facing today from our own excesses and lack of foresight. If you've ever seen her giving a presentation, you can see how she is like her writing. Natural, sweet yet carrying a hardcore edge of determination to get people to understand what is happening and what we can do to change things. Strangely enough, she makes me feel like it's possible if we but have the courage to use our common sense and stop pissing in our own backyards.

I give Living Down Stream a 5 Star Review because this book address the issues of Toxic Chemical waste and the lack of information held undercover by our government and their friends in large corporations all around this planet. For those of us with cancer it is not hard to look back in our history and know the reason for our condition.I am soon to be 82 and trying to complete a Bucket List Challenge of writing about Superfund Sites and Toxic Waste and their role in illness and death in this country. Dr Steingraber has a great style of written language for us to understand her struggle and cause. I will try to get the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida to have her speak in the near future.Bob Hallman

This book is superb. Eloquent, warm, and informative, it is a worthy successor to Silent Spring. In just a few short pages, she summarizes what we know about the complex way that environmental pollutants can lead to cancer. It is both a heart tugging human story and a dazzling scientific adventure. My only gripe is the relatively brief foray into the politics of how pollution can and has been controlled. Most of what she reports, politically speaking, leaves one with a sense of despair. But perhaps, engendering hope in political change is the topic of another book...

A great book that helps us understand the ties between cancer and factors such as exposures to harmful synthetic and hazordous chemicals in our environment. Living Downstream helps us understand the difficulty in "proving" scientifically which chemicals are causing cancer due to our exposures to so many chemicals and other factors (age, where we live etc.)

Review

"Dream Country is gut wrenching and incredible.”—Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes"This story, both sprawling and intimate by turns, is a miracle of construction, and Gibney fits its diasporic pieces the way a master should—with a keen eye, an open heart, a courageous spirit, and a sharp, sharp needle. This novel is a remarkable achievement."—Kelly Barnhill, New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Medalist"Gibney has masterfully woven together the histories of America and Africa through the multigenerational journeys of young people in search of home and self. Beautifully epic, timely, and outstanding in its breadth and scope, this story truly conveys what it means to be African American."—Ibi Zoboi, author of American Street, National Book Award Finalist★"A necessary reckoning."—Kirkus Reviews, starred★"Gibney blesses the reader with a marvelous literary tapestry of family, sacrifice, and dreams examining the lingering effects of slavery and racism in both the U.S. and Liberia. This powerful novel demonstrates how nonlinear history can be, ways the present is a consequence of the past, and that, though traumatized people can sometimes hurt others when trying to heal themselves, there’s nevertheless strength in hope that can keep us moving forward."—Booklist, starred★"[H]ighlights the inconsistencies between the beliefs a country projects to the world at large and the realities experienced by immigrants.... An excellent choice."—SLJ, starred ★"With riveting, lyrical prose, Gibney’s accomplished novel explores universal themes of home, family, power struggles, and endurance while demonstrating the liberating power of storytelling.—Publishers Weekly, starred ★"[A]lthough each story could exist on its own to great effect, the ways they inform one another are historically grand and intimately detailed."—BCCB, starred"Dream Country asks big questions and exposes new histories as it digs into the complexities of what Gibney calls 'the ongoing, spiraling history of the African-African American encounter'."—Minneapolis Star Tribune“A smart, many layered, and sometimes challenging book for smart people.”—St. Paul Pioneer Press "A vast and epic tale that explores racism, slavery, war, refugees, immigration, and what it means to be African-American as a whole.”—Bustle"Powerful, educational, and eye-opening."—Hello Giggles"[A]n illumination of how humans end up treating each other cruelly and how they resist."—The Horn Book“Shannon Gibney has taken history and imagination and gelled them into a time machine. Here is tragedy and survival, struggle and love, rendered with precision and an empathy born of a writer who has experienced the ‘dream-loop’ of history. Sometimes a story can't promise healing, or neat closure. Sometimes a story, even a magical one like this, is the necessary reopening of a wound.” —Bao Phi, award winning author of A Different Pond and Thousand Star Hotel"Dream Country is a gift of storytelling, of culture, and of understanding for an America that needs this book desperately. Through stories woven of manhood and humanity, of growing up and growing into oneself, Gibney shows us how the worlds between us grow wider even as our world grows smaller. She takes us through time and space to find the heart of an imperfect home."—Kao Kalia Yang, award winning author of The Latehomecomer  "Dream Country is not just the story that needed to be told. In both its specificity and its universality, Shannon Gibney’s majestic text is the conversation that we needed to have. It is the multiple truths that we needed to explore. One certain way to ensure more powerful tomorrows is to fill our todays with words and ideas like hers.”—Cornelius Minor, teacher and author of We Got This: Equity, Access, and the Quest to Be Who Our Students Need Us to Be"Gibney’s complex look at one family, told through a wide scope, is moving and unlike anything I have ever read before in YA. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Don’t miss it.—Teen Librarian Toolbox "Truly a tour de force and an outstanding example of what young adult literature can do when it stretches and takes risks and is in the talented, careful, passionate hands of a master writer."—Angie Manfredi, Nerdy Book Club A New York Public Library Best Book of 2018Kirkus Best YA Historical Fiction of 2018  A Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books 2018 Blue Ribbon Book2018 Nerdy Book Club Award Winner

Overwhelming, devastating, so incredibly moving. I cannot do a review that would be enough. Five stars are certainly not enough! I highly recommend the Audible version which really brings it alive with Bahni Tirpin’s passionate, sympathetic voice and consistently authentic-sounding accents.Other reviewers have put significant time and effort into outlining thoughts on the storyline and characters. I’ll just say I had goosebumps, over and over, while listening to this epic family saga and the horrifying fall out of slavery-colonization-revolution and I do not cry easily but got choked up several times toward the end.I am not much of a nonfiction reader. I learn best through fiction. I have worked side by side with Liberian immigrants and clients. I knew nothing of the history they were affected by and forced to come to the US. I didn’t ask many questions because I sensed it was an uneasy topic. Also, my work is with clients with mental illness so I am seeing many reactions to trauma. I have sometimes listened to stories of children and grandchildren who have achieved extreme success but I’ve seldom heard stories of difficult or disconnected children because why would I? Immigrant parents do not suffer for themselves, they suffer for their children. And a child who fails to be a model immigrant has to be too painful to discuss outside the family. That’s the beauty of fiction. It gives us access to experience that is rarely articulated in a multidimensional way.If you, like me, know little to nothing about Liberia you can check Wikipedia before reading. The links inside the articles led me to information that I found helpful. But also keep in mind that no one work if fiction can cover the ethnic diversity of the Liberian people and certainly not the diversity of lived experience.Gibney writes with so much compassion for every character and the book surely has a universal message. I hope many many young adult readers will be exposed to it because it can potentially build bridges and humanize every “other” in our lives. It’s also a great model for finding ways to bring parts of ourselves together by honoring our own histories, both known and forgotten. For that reason, I gave my son’s 10th grade teacher (who happens to be Somali-American) this book, as well as See No Color by the same author, in hopes that she might add them to her curriculum. Anyone who can afford to do something like this-please do!

I love this book. We start in a 21st century Minneapolis high school and wind up exploring 18th century Virginia; early 20th century Liberia and back again to the Midwest of "now," but not quite to the same space; it's a spiral, to use one of the book's key metaphors. Would we be better if we understood the threads of our history--the way we are tied to pasts we cannot touch; the way old conflicts can suddenly replay and reverse themselves and play out again, but not quite the same? This book kept surprising me and kept being beautiful and feeling true. Part of that is a mystery of art and the writer's craft--the intuitiveness that great writers stay open to, but which they can't scrutinize too closely or the magic could go. But the other part of this book's power comes from the writer's long, deep decade-long dive into deeply challenging historical times and spaces, both here in the US and in Liberia; listening hardest to the voices of people who feel the least at home in the spaces they wound up in. One of the best books I've read.

I like all of it. I know who wrote this book. She is my best instructor of writing at my College. This book was great so give my regards to her and tell her that it’s me, one of her former student at MCTC.Thank you, I love it reading.Abo

Definitely worth a purchase.Book Club Discussion: What do you think of the term fictional canvas of fact in regards to the narrative family history Angel wrote? Why do you think it was therapeutic for Angel to find out where she came from? The author stated that "some stories you choose, and others choose you. How do you think that would change the writing experience? Do you think Yasmine changed b/c of where she was at, or b/c of the experiences she had?Lesson Ideas: Refugees. Refugee Camps. Liberia/Congo conflict. American Colonization Society. Forced Labor Period. Liberian Civil War. Immigrants. African Americans and Black Americans. Monrovia. Slavery vs. Poor Wages. Racism. For a more detailed review check out my full review at Alohamora Open a Book.

This is a hugely ambitious book and the execution absolutely matches (and exceeds) the promise. The story examines one family over centuries and delves into history most readers won't be familiar with, but it does so incredibly well. Highly, highly recommended.

It’s nearly 1am as I’m writing this because I stayed up waaaay past my bedtime to devour all of this book in a single sitting. And now I can’t sleep because my brain is whirring with ideas and reflections and some critical thinking around my career and business goals. It’s honest, funny, heart-wrenching, educational, and just so, so human.I’ve long admired Rand for his work and his humanity, but he rose in my estimation that much more for putting so much wisdom and vulnerability to paper for others to benefit from. The writing is engaging and sharp, and Rand pulls no punches when it comes to sharing hard numbers, real emotions and difficult truths.I read a lot of business books and usually give them away afterward. But this one is staying on my shelf to remind me of the things I always believed that Rand validated (which made me feel so much less crazy) and the ones I need to learn with care and compassion myself.Go get yourself a copy or twelve. You don’t have to be (or aspire to be) a founder to appreciate the lessons and stories. Just read it.

A thoroughly enjoyable read on my recent flight from Portland to Chicago (~4h).I'd consider myself a friend of the author's and have had both online and offline conversations about some of the topics in the book. But it's been harder for me to ask for professional advice in person, and frankly the book is so well-structured that I think I got more out of it in this format than I would have in a conversation.Rand has always been a great writer, but has taken his writing to another level with the polish of this book. Yes there are his trademark cheesy jokes, but mostly it's filled with direct, digestible summaries of his thoughts on the economics of startups, growth lessons he and Moz learned, and how he helped build Moz's company culture into what it is today. If I had a small criticism of the book, as a former Moz employee, I was hoping for a little more meat behind how decisions were made in the startup boardroom (as opposed to some of the planning sessions he gives short shrift to in the book), particularly in the context of the economics of the business. But I can see how that kind of inside baseball would have gotten cut in favor of appealing to a wider audience. It more than delivers on its subtitle as a "Field Guide," and I wish I'd read it prior to starting my current company, as it might have steered me on a 30-degree angle to the path I'm on now. In that regard, if you're a founder or thinking about launching a startup, it would be more than worth the one-time $17.53 on Rand's advice. And I'll continue to refer to some of the tables he includes in the book indefinitely.

This book is the inoculation against the fetishization of startups and entrepreneurship you didn't know you needed to read. We're all caught up (if you're reading this review, that means you, too) in the TechCrunch articles, tales of rounds of investment at huge valuations, and wildly successful exits, that it's probably leading us to making shaky decisions within our careers--even if we're not the founders.I recommend reading this, but also an older book from a neighboring world, What I Learned Losing a Million Dollars (Columbia Business School Publishing), as another splash of cold water in a world where survivorship bias dictates the news, and our perception of reality. This is every bit as valuable to those who work (or might want to work) for startups, as it is to those who would want to found them. By understanding the perspectives of the players in the higher levels of the game, you can better recognize where (and if) you fit. Now, go forth and plot your own course. Fishkin's given you a pretty good map of where some of the dragons are, after all.

This is an honest and valuable book for any entrepreneur (or aspiring entrepreneur). In this book Rand walks you through his journey of growing his SaaS company from Day 1 all the way to the present day. In between, you'll learn about the many (brutally honest) twists and turns that Rand encountered during that journey. In fact, that's one of the main thing that separates this book from most other "How I did it" business books: Rand doesn't hide the mistakes made along the way. In that way, Lost and Founder reminded me a lot of the excellent "Hard Things About Hard Things".But what makes this a 5-star book is that Rand distills these successes and failures into actionable advice (much of which flies in the face of Silicon Valley conventional wisdom). I didn't necessarily agree with all his conclusions, but they were interesting food for thought. So if you're looking for an actionable, story-driven business book, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than Lost and Founder.
