It's exciting for me as a mom to see good books out there, encouraging our kids to work hard, go for their dreams, but still find their identity in the Lord. This is one such book. Book review: “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt...First & foremost, this book taught me that there are levels of poverty. For example, there’s regular poverty, Irish poverty, Irish Catholic poverty, and (worst of all) Irish Catholic poverty in the 1940s. The book is an autobiography on Frank McCourt growing up in Limerick, Ireland. The book won the Pulitzer Prize and, quite frankly, he deserved it...as sad as it is, it is very well written, flows nicely, and keeps the reader wanting more. Some of my favorite highlights from the book:1. “As a child, I thought a balanced diet was bread and tea, a solid and a liquid.” Frank McCourt2. Frank McCourt had beautiful handwriting—a “fine fist” as they said in the old country—and he wrote Angela’s Ashes in longhand.3. I had heard the term Soupers but never knew what it meant: “We had the soupers in the Famine. The Protestants went round telling good Catholics that if they gave up their faith and turned Protestant they’d get more soup than their bellies could hold and, God help us, some Catholics took the soup, and were ever after known as soupers.”4. All this time, I’ve been saying Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! Evidently, I’ve been saying it wrong. Per the book, it’s...Jesus, Mary and Holy St. Joseph!5. Frank’s Mom had a decent sense of humor. Irish Catholic wives were supposed to have children relentlessly. This was her reply after her last baby, Alphie (child #10!): “Mam says, Alphie is enough. I’m worn out. That’s the end of it. No more children. Dad says, The good Catholic woman must perform her wifely duties and submit to her husband or face eternal damnation. Mam says, As long as there are no more children eternal damnation sounds attractive enough to me.”6.) On your 16th birthday in Ireland, it was tradition to have Your Father take you to the local pub for your first pint Of Guinness (boys only of course)...7.) The funniest story in the book was when the family was literally cutting the wood walls of their home to use as firewood and were running out!: “Mam says, One more board from that wall, one more and not another one. She says that for two weeks till there’s nothing left but the beam frame. She warns us we are not to touch the beams for they hold up the ceiling and the house itself. Oh, we’d never touch the beams. She goes to see Grandma and it’s so cold in the house I take the hatchet to one of the beams. Malachy cheers me on and Michael claps his hands with excitement. I pull on the beam, the ceiling groans and down on Mam’s bed there’s a shower of plaster, slates, rain. Malachy says, Oh, God, we’ll all be killed, and Michael dances around singing, Frankie broke the house, Frankie broke the house!”8.) I had never heard the term American Wake but this makes perfect sense: “Mam says we’ll have to have a bit of party the night before I go to America. They used to have parties in the old days when anyone would go to America, which was so far away the parties were called American wakes because the family never expected to see the departing one again in this life.”

The only thing I regret is not knowing about this book when Frank MacCourt was still alive! Like whyyyy!!! This is literally MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME! The story is heart breaking but the way it's told is HILARIOUS!!! I couldn't put the book down! I would read on the train everyday, literally laughing out loud and I'm sure people would wonder what the hell is wrong with me. I wouldn't "give a fiddler's fart!" Hahaha. His sense of humor is over the top. I laughed so bad when trying to picture what he was saying, which happened in every passage I read. I've never read a story this sad, yet very funny. Reading this book brought me so close to McCourt even though I never met him. I could relate in so many anecdotes he told even though I grew up in a totally different country. I just wish he was still alive so that I could meet him, and hug him, and tell him how much I love him. I would love to meet his bothers Malachy and Alphie. I saw that there is a museum in Ireland that depicts the story in the book. I will definitely go to Ireland and visit it. IT'S WELL WORTH THE TRAVEL. He definitely inspired me and made me change my writing style. This book is written in such a beautiful way with such a free, powerful voice. THANK YOU, FRANK MAcCOURT WHEREVER YOU ARE NOW, WHICH I'M SURE IS HEAVEN, FOR MAKING MY DAYS, MY SUBWAY RIDES, AND MY NIGHTS! THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME HAPPY WHILE READING YOU. I appreciate you and I love you! May your beautiful soul rest in peace!

McCourt's story was very well written.The setting was Ireland and he brought the flavorof the Emerald Isle along with all its greenery to a bigger than life status!So much of the book was depressing yet he intermingled comedic parts throughout to keep it balanced and exciting!The reader was shown the perils of poverty and all its brutal effects on a family: the father, mother, children and relatives.In most cases it brought out the worst of people but some characters showed strength and resilience beyond imagination!The ending provided no resolutions and left you with a grave feeling of despair and uncertainty!It was a sad tale of woe which makes one wonder if any of us could ever endure what Frank and his family did and live to actually write about it?

IF you like being scared by reading actual eyewitness accounts of terrifying events, this is the book for you. It is a no holds barred look at the unbelievable stupidity and just plan bad luck of people who travel to the Grand Canyon from around the world to enjoy it wonders... and sometimes fall off the edge, get struck by lightning, eaten by bears, dive into rivers without noticing the waterfall a few feet away, or wander off the trail and are never seen again.Almost every single death is because of the incredible witlessness of people who read signs, listen to rangers and then instantly do the very thing they were warned NEVER TO DO.The events are fleshed out with the back story around it, and the end of each chapter has a list of the date, time, place and name of all the people (to date) who have died of that cause. The first chapter leaps right in with accounts of people who fell off the edge of the Grand Canyon. There are hundreds of people who HAVE to climb the barrier to get the perfect shot (because being a foot closer to the edge than anyone else is so cool..), and did not live to tell the tale.. Amazing as it is almost unbelievable, People have backed their cars OFF the cliff edge while parking, left their children in a running vehicle without putting it in park or setting the brake, "for just a second" and had to watch as their car and children went over the edge of a thousand foot drop, or just gunned it and went all Thelma and Louise into space....You begin to get the feeling that some people should never go anywhere, because they have zero common sense or instinct for self preservation. The book does go into the fact that we live in a fairly sanitized society, and the Disneyland syndrome, of thinking that everything is happy and safe for us because it IS A PARK, also applies to the wilderness.There are also chapters on murders and suicides in the park, and of employee mishaps going back to the 1800s, which I thought was intensely fascinating. The indians who lived in the canyon, and who were driven out of it, also did their part to erase some early tourists from the face of the earth, and i honestly couldn't blame them, although some accounts are pretty shocking. Altogether it is a must read for anyone who loves trivia, startling their friends with weird tales or just wants to know, "what happens when someone falls off the edge". This book gives you the real story.

My husband took me this past Sept. to the Grand Canyon. WOW is all I can say. We have been married 47 yrs, he has wanted to take me to see this miracle of nature all these years. I was so taken back from the awesomeness of it all. I decided to order this book to read about the mishaps that has taken place over the years of tourists and visitors that have lost their lives at the Grand Canyon. The author did an excellent job in writing this book. The Grand Canyon is so beautiful, yet so dangerous at the same time.

There are more ways to stupidly die than I could ever have imagined. I could occasionally feel and sympathize with their exasperation at human hubris.The Kindle version I read was updated in 2016. I also had a paperback copy from 2001. I can report that people have been just as careless in the intervening fifteen years.Very highly recommended.

Like most readers, I bought a copy of this book for Kindle after seeing it EVERYWHERE for sale at The Grand Canyon. After watching people taking ridiculous risks at the South Rim, I couldn't resist reading a book about all the times those risks didn't pay off.The opening sections are absorbing, covering all those rim fall deaths over the years. My only surprise, based on what we saw in our visit, was that there weren't more in this section. The book then moves through all other varieties of death below, above, and over the rim. Some sections were more interesting than others, but for the most part, it was fascinating reading, and I found myself stopping regularly to read parts to my husband.The authors' goal is not ghoulish. It is to alert Canyon visitors to the fact that this is a dangerous place. We live in a highly protected society. People sue councils and home owners if they trip over a slight fault in a footpath. As the authors point out, this safe and largely secure environment is not The Grand Canyon. The authors state that visitors to the Canyon tend to think that they wouldn't be allowed to do the riskier things (such as the river tours) if they could get hurt. This attitude is wrong.This book is highly recommended for anyone who has visited the Canyon. Although we only visited the South Rim for the night, I was able to clearly "see" where many of the things in the book took place. I would also recommend it to anyone planning to visit The Grand Canyon, particularly if they want to hike below the rim. Forewarned is forearmed.

Pretty good introduction. Very actionable advice and tips. Nevertheless, I would only recommend it if you have read The Toyota Way, Learning to See and/or similar books on Lean beforehand. Something else to know is that this book, like the others mentioned, focus on manufacturing. You will have to translate the concepts to your domain (e.g. Software in my case)

This is an exceptional book that not only provides the reader with a deep perspective of key Toyota enablers but thoroughly explains how to use and develop the skills to create them.Any serious study of Toyota reveals that PDCA (the Deming Cycle) and the A3 reporting mechanism are at the heart of the onion. These are the tools that enabled the development of their Production System. As a friend and Toyota manager once explained, "it's their circulatory system" or how they create and transmit knowledge. These tools are as prevalent in Toyota's PD or Marketing as they are in a production unit.If you are serious about implementing "Lean" your time and money could not be better placed than in reading this book! It is well written and very useful.

As is, I think the repetition has a tendency to hide and demphasize differences and key points.- Fig 6.2 and related description seems to have some serious issues, whether it is message, erroneous, or other I cannot yet say- Some jargon (e.g. "spinning your wheels") that will not translate easily if you are not AmericanNeutral:> 5 Whys was not deeply described and maybe borders in my opinion on an incorrect description, although in fairness to the authors this is not the focus of the book> Heavy use of "at Toyota" (which is on the cover) so if this is a turnoff, please note that "Toyota" shows up in here quite a bitBottom line: Recommended for everyone. Despite cons, easily in my top 5 lean/excellence books.

This book is really an excellent and in depth analysis of A3 thinking and the basic process that underlies it, PDCA or the Deming Model. It is a good primer to understand how to use A3 thinking and how to avoid many of the pitfalls that are typical when Americans try to emulate Japanese management practices. Personally, I'm more interested in the Strategy A3 process than the Problem Solving A3 but it all flows nicely and should help anyone interested in learning more about the process.

Mindy Lighthipe's excellent book works for both the beginner and intermediate artist and perhaps the more advanced artist seeking instruction to botanical and bird art. She has excellent introductions to graphite and color with graphite hardness range charts with exercises to build one's own personal charts as well as color chart and color mixing charts to test one's range of pigments with advice on a limited palate to begin with and advice on supplies beyond pencil and pigments, such as paper, erasers, palettes, etc. The books is generously illustrated with charts and color photographs, including ones from her online courses, and this book would be a wonderful supplement to her online courses, while one need not take the online courses to benefit from the book. (However there is much in the online courses that is not covered in the book, so don't feel that that the online courses would be redundant. Mindy Lighthipe is a very lively teacher on her online course and a wonderful demonstrator and there is much to learn from viewing her technique. Unfortunately, she has yet to make a video course of her bird drawing or color pencil technique yet, but that is no criticism of the bo ok, but rather a plus that at least we have her bird techniques here. If only she had covered her butterfly techniques here also! I am sure t that she will someday soon.) Mindy's discussion on perspective is very helpful, at least to me, and by discussion I mean the heavily illustrated pages demonstrating the terms and definitions commonly used. It helped clear up some questions I had held for many years and could not get quite cleared up. She also covers cast shadows. Her armature drawings are extremely helpful for preparing for finally beginning painting and really clinch turning the 2D drawing into a convincing 3D representation on paper. This is a very useful bookend you should definitely get it if you would like to begin drawing and painting, even if you are not concerned about what subject matter. Botanical and bird art are very good subject matter to begin with and this is a very good approach. See also on Youtube her free demonstrations and give some thought to saving up and signing up for one of her online classes.

Received my copy today and very impressed with the contents! I'm new to watercolor and botanical, plus I had already purchased a couple of Billy Showell's and and a few other Kindle books on the subject. However this book not only has an excellent teaching guide, but it blows my other botanical books away! :) I'm so glad I took the chance and purchased this book before it even had been reviewed.

I had never taken an art class before taking one with Mindy, and now realize that she was the best teacher I ever had in my art career. I'm so happy that when I opened her book, I was immediately taken back to her class and the excellent fundamentals she taught me. Anyone can pick up this book and, regardless of skill-level, create something beautiful. Even now, as a more practiced artist, I find that the exercises help me to improve my own art style and push me even further to do my best. I can't recommend highly enough.

Really love this book. It is absolutely gorgeous and the artist provides clear details and instructions. It is so nice when artists are generous enough to show how their work comes together. Even including little details like dealing with wax bloom or scanning the finished piece.

I actually bought the book hoping to have plenty of beautiful bird illustrations. But there are quite a lot of botanical information and detailed illustrations with plenty of sound advice and superb drawings and paintings of mostly botanical illustrations and she has an amazing eye for plenty of detail! Wouldn't recommend to the absolute beginner I think they as I did become overwhelmed in the painting and drawing process. Might leave beginner's frustrated due to lack of skill!?It's completely worth the price!

This is a lovely book and I do recommend it but I'm not sure that artists who are more knowledgable about birds and flowers will find it as useful but I will be buying it for a young artist who will .

As a beginner in botanical art and watercolor I've taken all of Mindy Lighthipe's online classes and highly recommend. Her exceptional teaching style and experience has helped me to achieve my goals. Lighthipe is an exceptional teacher...clear, concise, and practical in her approach. She offers easy to follow lessons that build one upon another and this book is no exception. I have other books on drawing, watercolor and botanical art and Mindy's is my favorite thus far. A definite go to resource that I will use time and time again.
