This is a novel we selected for our Book Club, and my first reaction was that this is an odd book. But it turned out to be a gift. The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen 83 ¼ Year Old is written as an actual diary of a pensioner in an assisted living home in Amsterdam, a novel translated from Dutch to English. The reality of the setting was spot on, no mincing words here. The characters were true to life with a lot of whining about old-age maladies, and the main characters in the Old but Not Yet Dead club were delightful and genuine. I, myself, am close enough to this age to relate and sympathize, but the surprise for me was the perseverance of this group of friends. And, there, is the gist of this tale. Friendship. A true, deep love for each, a love that was often held inside but loyal to the end. Of course, in this setting you can expect a lot of ends. But there was also great dark wit, well-placed cynicism, out-loud laughter, and such tender moments. I was uplifted by the spirit of this novel. The author is unrevealed, and there is a sequel, On the Bright Side, recently published. Though I must admit I am quite jealous that the Dutch apparently now have a TV series based on Mr. Groen's escapades.

Mr. Hendrik Groen, resident of an old age home in Amsterdam, decides to keep a journal over the course of 2013. He intends to write a scathing and honest look at life in the home, but it turns into a charming meditation on life, love, and aging. It is interesting to see the character move from snarky and unhappy to trying to make the most of his life.Mr. Groen begins by commenting on the other residents of the facility and their irritating habits. His best friend is a heavy drinker with no filter and a love of mischief. Mr. Groen’s life begins to change when an intelligent and pleasant woman moves in. Together they decide to learn more about the rules and regulations of the home, suspecting that the rules are made for the convenience of administration. Along with his closest friends, they form the Old But Not Yet Dead Club. Each member takes a turn planning a secret event for the group. This angers the residents, who are essentially jealous at being left out. Over the year, members of the group suffer various illnesses and you see them pull together to help each other. The journal also contains commentary on recent events, financial affairs, and conditions for the elderly throughout the world. There are also a lot of reflections on assisted suicide, which Mr. Groen fully supports and wishes for himself. Pro or con, it will make you think.This is a very enjoyable novel with a delightful protagonist. I found it interesting that the author decided to reveal very little about Mr. Groen’s life prior to being in the old age home. You find out just enough to know that his life has not been easy. The lack of backstory works here, as it keeps you focused on the present. This book has been compared to A Man Called Ove. There are some similarities, but Mr. Groen lacks the bite and bitterness of Ove. However, they both discover that it takes a village to make a life happy and full.

Taut, touching, witty prose. A diary for one year filled with emotionally astute observations of day to day life of an inmate of an old age home in Amsterdam. The pettiness, bravery and stoicism displayed by residents, staff and relatives in mostly mundane situations. The outside world as it pertains to those about to die, mostly their fears of further spending cuts. Railing against the administration. Organizing the "old but not dead club" with outings to break the tedium. Members slowly going senile or dying. Started as a project to avoid sinking into despondency, the author develops through his writing, both in self confidence and charity displayed to others. A mild mannered, likable rebel, he shows courage, humanity and the frailness of age. The book moves swiftly, despite its slow subject, and is a delightful read the reader is enervated by the Hendrik Groen's minor rebellions against the administration, his brave jaunts on his mobility scooter, his dandy dressing, his caustic comments about his fellow residents' foibles, maliciousness, jingoism, slowness and forgetfulness. Definitely worth five stars.

What an amazing read! Touching, insightful, laugh out loud funny, poignant- Hendrik and his friends felt so real that I fell in love with each and every one of his little band of merrymakers. This is how I want to be when I'm old...er.....! They are the kind of friends I want to have. No matter what your age this book will remind you of the things that truly matter in life- something to look forward to, and friends. Never stop living life to the fullest and enjoy every minute the best you can. As soon as I finished I began reading it again! I do hope "Hendrik" decides to continue his diary in another volume!!

At 83-1/4 years old Hendrick decides to quit being so easy to get along with and tell the world exactly what he thinks ... in his diary at least. Full of funny, quaint and poignant tales of living in a nursing home, he describes his fellow "inmates" in hilarious and heart-felt ways, facing life and death on a permanent basis, but always with compassion, understanding, and not a small sense of humor.It will make you laugh out loud, it may even make you cry ... but no matter what, you'll enjoy the ride. As any good book should do. A definite winner.

Hilarious. I read it in Dutch, and bought this for an English speaking friend. The only reason why I did not give it 5 stars is that the fine nuances and cultural details of Holland and Amsterdam or the Dutch jokes he makes do not come across as well in English....I loved it, and really makes you think about your own aging process in general. It is an easy read, written as a diary for each day of the year. In short, it is sweet, sad, funny, touching human story about growing old in a retirement home.

A critic writing for The Christian Science Monitor states: "Great philosophical biographies can be counted on one hand. Monk's life of Wittgenstein is such a one. It's a probing, moving experience."Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein was born on April 27, 1889, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. He died at the age of 62 on April 29, 1951, in Cambridge, England. Many academic professionals rate him as the most important and most influential philosopher of the 20th century.Wittgenstein had two completely different careers: the “early" Wittgenstein, author of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), a work which many critics believed (incorrectly) that Wittgenstein was a logical positivist, and the “late” Wittgenstein, author of Philosophical Investigations (published posthumously in 1953) in which he argued that all philosophical "problems" are merely linguistic confusions--misunderstandings of the proper use of language. In Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein wrote: "Philosophy aims at the logical clarification of thoughts. Philosophy is not a body of doctrine but an activity. A philosophical work consists essentially of elucidations. Philosophy does not result in 'philosophical propositions,' but rather in the clarification of propositions. Without philosophy, thoughts are, as it were, cloudy and indistinct: its task is to make them clear and to give them sharp boundaries."A person who is only passingly familiar with Wittgenstein and his philosophy probably has heard at least of Wittgenstein's explication of "language games," a method which, he affirms shows that the words and concepts of our various "languages" are rooted in our idiosyncratic "life-stream" and are formed by the particular culture which we inherited and inhabit. Wittgenstein's explanation of how "language games" work (and often don't work) is one of the most fascinating and intriguing aspects of his philosophy, especially as found in his Philosophical Investigations. Wittgenstein also stated, "Philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language." The aim in philosophy is to dispel the fog of confusion, or to use another metaphor, "to show the fly the way out of the fly-bottle."At Trinity College, Cambridge, Wittgenstein was a protégé, and later the "master," of another world-famous philosopher, Bertrand Russell, who described Wittgenstein's philosophy as "a curious kind of logical mysticism." But he would also regularly mail impassioned letters to old and new friends, watch movies (Westerns were his favorite), attend concerts, and go on long walks coupled with intimate conversations. Furthermore the author provides valuable advice on how to deal with adult adhd. What I liked most were the little summaries at the end of each chapter.

The book provides a good understanding of ADHD. My mother is suffering from the issue since last 1 year and it encouraged me to purchase this book. It’s a very nice guide to ADHD and it tells how to manage it effectively. It’s highly recommended from my side.

Nice large print and to the point. I got this book for my boyfriend to help me understand him and his plight with ADHD. I thought it was well put together for a person with differculties maintaining focus. He has been reading it also.

Wow. Very informative book. Sometimes we forget that ADHD is no only a child's problem. Millions of adults have it but we tend to associate it more with Children. The books gives some signs on what to look for to see if an Adult has it. It gives you ways to find out if you do have, and suggestions to live with and move beyond it. Very detailed book.

This is just a brief superficial repeat of the most elementary basics. Any free Google website would give the same information and more for free.

This book gives good advice on tactics to cope with ADHD. If you are unfamiliar this book is a good primer.

Dr. Daniel Findley, P.E. is a Senior Research Associate with the Institute for Transportation Research and Education in Raleigh, NC. He specializes in asset management and inventory, horizontal curve safety, economic impact analysis, multi-modal transportation, unique transportation engineering studies, and logistics. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina.Dr. Bastian Schroeder is a Principal Engineer for KAI in North Carolina. He served as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on over 22 funded projects, for sponsors including FHWA, NCHRP, SHRP2, ITE, NCDOT and others. Dr. Schroeder served as chief editor for the 2nd edition ITE Manual of Transportation Studies, was lead author on the new FHWA Diverging Diamond Interchange Informational Guide, and is overseeing the development of all freeway chapters in the 6th Edition of Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) expected in 2016. Dr. Schroeder has authored or co-authored over 31 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 32 peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and has given numerous presentations at state, national, and international conferences. Seven of his papers were recognized with Best Paper Awards, including the 2010 D. Grant Mickle Award by TRB.
