Usually I am sceptical when a reviewer says he/she laughed out loud. Usually I find some humor, but this time the reviewers are spot on. Maybe if you don't have personal experience with farm life you won't enjoy this as much; but, having grown up with dairy cows, I found her experiences with Attila hilarious. Hank's bronco ride had me laughing out loud. The love she felt for her family comes through: the closeness she shared as her Dad's sidekick, and the scares she gave her poor Mother! I'm happy to say that she must have a good editor/proofreader. Only a couple of goofs, like phased for fazed slipped through. Not enough to disturb the reading enjoyment of this old teacher. I gladly recommend this memoir, and plan to read some of this author's fiction.
OMG, OMG!! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lived on a farm or wonders what it would be like...Shanna has a bushel basket load of stories for you. She has such a knack for giving mental images in her writings that you may wonder if you only read about something or did you actually experience it. She shares her family in the stories as well as all the critters that go with the farm scene. Reading one story each morning would certainly put sunshine in the rest of your day. She's included some pictures to enhance the stories and, of course, her signature recipe at the end. Treat yourself to this delightful book; I double-dog dare ya to not smile or even laugh out loud at some of the situations she describes.
Growing up on a farm in the Midwest and still living on that farm I can certainly relate to Shanna Hatfield's "adventures". It surely brought back a lot of memories so please don't think of this book as pure fiction. I did not have brothers but followed my father and grandfather like a shadow and like Shanna avoided house hold chores like a plague. Even if you have never set foot on a farm this book is a great read and believe me it could happen and probably did.
Even though I wasn't raised as a farm girl, I could relate to a few of these experiences living in farm country and visiting family and friends. Shanna is such a wonderful story teller, she had me laughing out loud at times. Her love of family and the loving way she grew up on the farm, which you will read here, shows in all the books she writes, which I love and enjoy reading. Recommended for the giggles that are sure to come out, as you read this true to life book. JudyE
I liked the easy flow of this book, more like a collection of memorable incidents in Shanna's life than consecutive chapters of a story, it does however hold ones interest. I liked the stories as they reminded me of my own lonely childhood growing up without siblings or friends way out in the country. If you are looking for a solid story to get your teeth into, this is not it, but it is an easy, quick read with lots of laughs.
Loved this book. Shanna has a great way of telling stories to be descriptive and great fun. I was reminded of many similar incidents from my own growing up in the country years and had many good laughs while reading this book. A rare find in this world of grim or bawdy stories. You will enjoy every chapter and probably resell a few tales!Thanks, Shanna for the entertainment and the short escape back to the good ole days.
I can't remember when was the last time I read a book I enjoyed as much as Farm Girl. How refreshing to read about a normal family. No abuse No bad language. No sex. Just a very well written fun book from start to finish. Laughed at the antics of the animals. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I throughly enjoyed reading Farm Girl. Laughing several time in each chapter. I would have to say Shanna nailed it perfectly.
