My family’s history I love it

A very dramatic and engaging unique account of an African American, James Churchwill Vaughan (1828-93), migration from America to Africa a decade before the Civil War. This was his father’s dying wish. He did not have a happy start in Liberia, but after much struggle and a migration to present-day Nigeria, he found success as a merchant and set the ground work for a wealthy and politically established family that has had a great impact on the shaping of the region. The conclusion Lindsay presents is that “Africa, rather than America, offered new opportunities for people of African descent.” “Go back to Africa” is frequently used as an insult in American media and in historical accounts, but here this concept of returning to the ancestral land gains an economic and cultural strongpoint. The “Introduction” describes how the book began in 2002 during the author’s trip to Africa, where Lindsay met somebody of a mixed North Carolinian and Benin princess descent and this inspired her to learn more about his family, who turned out to be outstanding members of the community. The extensive family tree of this family in Africa and America takes up three pages preceding this intro. The family was only too happy to talk about these roots with their visitor, and clearly were of great help to the research it took to gather the details about James Vaughan’s life, which had previously been featured on the cover of Ebony in 1975, but was hardly known to scholars in the States. James actually did not move alone, but with his brother, and they were assisted by the American Colonization Society, the very one that championed a version of the “Go Back to Africa” campaign. Lindsay clarifies that Vaughan’s success was unique and that he was perhaps the sole person who “accomplished” the feat of reconnecting ties to his African family (3). Curiously, on the following page, Lindsay contradicts an early assumption she wrote into the book – apparently, Vaughan’s father was born in America, rather than in Africa, unlike the tale Vaughan was told or was passed down in the family. This is mentioned because if his father was born in Africa, his face would have been decorated with Yorubas facial marks that distinguished the main family trees in the region, and so Vaughan’s relatives would have been easier to find than they ended up being.A great, innovative biography, history and cultural study of an alternative migratory narrative. As a migrant myself, I think this is a respectful and engaging approach to explaining how being an insider in a culture can give the social status needed for generations-long successful saga. --Pennsylvania Literary Journal, Volume IX, Issue 1

I loved the book. This is a continuation of Lily and Miranda and all her warriors, assassination attempts, and inventions. Loved the medicine used and the mastery of different technologies. Very similar to Cross-Time Engineer series - about the same period too. I too was expecting her to get to the capital. The ending was disappointing with not even a hint that there would be another book in the series - it was an abrupt end. Realize that THE ROYAL COURT follows - please add a message at the end of this book saying when it will be available.Due to be released August 28th so readers - don't despair.The salt, lace, and glass technologies were the most fun. I was hoping they'd get to faceted precious stones and wind power but alas - Lily never gets to meet her husband Jess in this world after a HUGE buildup throughout the first three novels. She never gets to the capital in this part of the tale. She never meets the King. This book is the buildup to...the next in the series. You get no follow - through. It's like somebody was editing and left out the last four chapters or someone said - divide the book here - why should you give readers even a cliff-hanger ending - just stop in mid-thought.Don't get me wrong - the book is great - what there is of it. There is no suggestion that there will be more (but there is an additional book). I really enjoyed the read but the price was high for a book with no planned ending. I gave the book 5 stars just to encourage the writer to write more in the series. Get food and water near you - it's that good.

Ridiculously good! (well so far still reading...The only bad thing is that its way to short! and also not followed by a long list of sequels yet... i will be in pure agony suffering withdrawal symptoms waiting for the next novel... its that good!My suggestion if you suffer from the same problem is to launch yourself into a wide orbit at an approachable speed of light so you can have time flash by and have more to read on returning... sadly i lack the financial resources for this...

Even his own cousin is shocked by his unwarranted hostility towards Lilly. People are beginning to see him for who is...a bag sack of nothing. Lol I’m excited to see how Lilly will react when she meets him. I’m hoping she stands her ground and completely ignores him. That will probably burn him more since he’s Mr Loverman. (Eyeroll) I hope the meet in the next book, let’s not drag it out too long.August, is the best dad ever! He really loves his daughter I’m so happy she has him as one of her champions. And dear little Mirrie, is growing up...and hopeful into a strong, intelligent woman.Honestly I wasn’t excited about Lilly visiting the palace but now that she’s set up her grand entrance I’m so excited!!!Pleaseeeee give us another book soon! Pleaseeeee

The Medieval Tale is paced perfectly for me. Not too slow, but with plenty of action to keep it exciting. Not too detailed, but with plenty of juicy ideas to explore. The monsters are human, as so many should be, and the heroes are all too human also, which keeps the story believable. Countess Lily and her resurrected alter ego Aliya introduce their medieval subjects, peers and rulers to a relatively small selection of simple modern pleasures ranging from housecleaning to glass mirrors to cooperative community government, while defending themselves from brigands, assassins, pirates and idiots.The author guides us through all these adventures with a dry humor that has razor sharp edges. Her characters are not cookie cutter, but diverse and drawn right out of common, everyday experience so we cannot mistake them. Some serve only to teach us the penalties for stupid evil. Others show that redemption is possible. There is excellent balance between justifiable rage and judicious caution.If any excess attaches to these fine stories it is perhaps the multiplicity of murderous plotting, and the perhaps too easy acceptance of modern concepts by medieval folk. Readers should remember that the medieval world having no TV soap operas or movie mayhem, people everywhere were forced to supply their own. Factor in greed, envy, jealousy, fury, vanity and all the other weaknesses of any era and the seemingly innumerable conspiracies are explained and accepted. If you find too many people, especially too many people in powerful positions, too ready to accede to Countess Lily's modern ideas, well, perhaps they are swayed by the modern wealth she showers upon them.Then again, perhaps her Virman guards and their artistic arrangement of a treacherous baron's well-preserved corpse figure prominently in the thoughts of others....Countess Lily is no dainty flower!I'm sure now that I have finished reading the third book I shall read them all again at least once more before the fourth book becomes available.

Book 3 in the Medieval Tales series has me hooked in a way no other book has.I devoured this story so fast that I hated myself for not reading slower. After the last page, I instantly started over from the beginning and read it again.After that I became desperate. I saw in the back of the book that I could follow Lina J. Potter on Facebook (I already follow her on Amazon). So, after tracking her down on the FB, I immediately liked her page and started scrolling for information on book 4. I found out that I’ll have to wait until August 28th and (I’m not proud of myself) I... tried to... bribe her for the next book. I offered double the price. I’d probably pay triple at this point because I’m that desperate! She did reply right away, but held strong to her values and told me I could preorder soon... August seems so close, but so far away right now.I’m in book purgatory. Nothing I try to read is catching my attention, which only happens after I’ve read something truly extraordinary.

Pretty

I do not like this book at all for coloring. First of all, it is printed on both sides, small details are so small that it is difficult to color with even the sharpest pencil, I ended up using ultra fine colored pens in many areas, which because they cannot be blended well made for a flat looking picture or illustration. The paper is thin and often the pen ink bled through to the other side, so I often had to sacrifice page in order to color the other. In addition to being printed on both sides, there was no perforation to pull the page out of the book, which is my preferred way to color, so I'm left with a colored in book and when I would have liked to pick the best picture to frame as an 'art' piece for my office. Overall, I would not recommend this book for coloring.

I seem to "collect" coloring books rather than actually use them, but getting this one tells me maybe I have been buying the wrong ones for my coloring tastes and passions. I couldn't wait to start coloring this one! I foresee a whole new collection of fashion color books! In fact, I may have to get another of this specific one to color them twice (Yes, I know I could make copies, but for "reasons" thats not happening here.)I thought I had a pretty good collection of colored pencils, but they seem to be more specific to nature coloring, and I can see from coloring in this book that I will have to expand my collection (about 85 colors combined from three brands). I am afraid it is an addiction ... !I have enjoyed the Dover Coloring Books since long before "adult coloring" was a thing -- going back a good 25 years. These pages are artfully detailed, but not so much so that they are intimidating to color. The styles of both dresses and hairstyles/accessories are true to the time depicted (it's an area I've researched for costuming). Using this Godey's Fashions color book takes me back to a time I have only had the pleasure to read and dream about. I am loving the experience!

This book cost $2.55. From some of the reviews I wasn't expecting much. One of the review claimed there was too much text and the pictures are too small. Yes there is text but I do enjoy reading the text and I ponder about the time period as I color. If you want to do much shading this is not necessarily the right book for you. There are tiny detail in several of the dresses. In my opinion this is a perfect coloring book for those who enjoy coloring, or those who are learning about shading faces and the folds of dresses and floweres. At the price I would buy a few copies. That's $2.55 including shipping!!!! Great deal!Actually, I have bought several coloring books this month and this is by far my favorite.

I've ordered quite a few of the coloring books for pencils, and this one is the best! Detailed, beautiful pictures. I don't agree with the other reviewer saying it was too pretty to use. The pictures, after being colored, are gorgeous, and to be able to flip from page to page and see the different styles and colors on the models, is really enjoyable! You do have to be careful not to use too much pressure on the pencils as it will show through on the flip side, but if you just do a soft coloring, there's no problem at all.

This coloring book has some very beautiful resigned dresses to color. I know that I will spend many happy hours coloring these fashions from an era gone by.There are thirty dresses from the Victorian era to color, fashion that reminds me of the historic romance that I like to read. When ladies wore lots and lots of petticoat, and young ladies wore these stunning designers dresses to coming out parties.It is a shame that these beautiful design are two to a page, back to back, otherwise this coloring book would be perfect. They are printed on bright white paper that is of medium weight. I will be using my coloring pencil to color in this coloring book, don't want to mess up the beautiful dress on the back of the page.You will be very happy buying this book, I sure am. This is a great buy.

Beautiful book. The pages are double sided with pictures being printed on the both the front and the back of the page. But the paper is pretty heavy so there doesn't seem to be too much of a problem with bleed through or grooves showing up on the other side of the page even when you push hard. Some of the pictures had quite a bit of black in them but there is still plenty left to color. The hardest part is that a lot of the pictures are so pretty I'm scared to color them.

this is a lovely coloring book BUT if you plan to use markers in this book you will lose half your pictures as this book has pictures on both sides of the page. I did know that when I purchased it so it was no big deal for me. I haven't decided if I am going to scan the pictures so I don't lose any of them or use colored pencils on the pages. I do like the fact that within the pages (front and back covers) it shows all the gowns in color so you can get an idea of what they will look like when finished. There is also a small history of the dresses on the pages to you learn a few facts along with having the fun of coloring

The artists depiction of these images from Godeys Ladies Book are detailed and goorgeous, and I would've given it 5 stars had they not did an injustice to Ming Ju Sun by printing it front and back on lightweight stock paper, which made the book thin & flimsy. Frankly, her renderings deserve far better presentation than they (and she) received from Dover with this particular book. One suggestion for a solution to the problem of attempting to control inks bleeding through the paper when they are printed front and back, as they are in several of my favorote Dover books, is to copy the selected image onto a higher quality paper (i used a bright white card stock).

"Diamonds Are For Never." I'm smiling as I write that title after just finishing Aertker's second rip roaring installment to his brilliant Crime Travelers Series. Read it and you'll know why I'm smiling. Like the first book, Brainwashed, Diamonds is not just a great read, it's a "ride". I couldn't put it down and when I did, I was thinking about what I was missing while my real life was in session.I bought Brainwashed for my children, who read it in a few sittings and ended up reading it myself - and loved it. When Diamonds Are For Never arrived I dove in before the kids and was reminded why I like this series so much.The pace is brisk. It's actually kind of remarkable how there are no chapters that end where you can say, "Oh, I can stop reading here." I got sucked in deeper and deeper with each new revelation or twist. (And I'm not 11 years old")Lucas Benes's world is populated with characters so vivid, sympathetic and fun, plucked from the far corners of the globe and drawn with respect for the multitude of cultures they represent, making each character compelling and likable. If you want a book with an authentic global/international flavor that reads like a classic spy novel, Diamonds Are For Never is it.The villains are as fun to hate and as diabolical as Dr. No, Lex Luther or Cat Woman. Siba Generro, CEO of aptly and ironically named, The Good Company enters her scenes with dazzling visual renderings and sizzling lines. I love her even though I'm supposed to hate her. I found myself giggling with this book - a lot.And throughout the book, Aertker sends a positive message to his child readers (and this dad) that the world and its problems are not in the hands of only the adults. The book's child characters convey the message that kids have the wit, determination and intelligence to contribute to the undoing of many of the "bad" things the world must struggle with- in this case, the dirty work of The Good Company.In reading both books in this new, squeaky clean and fast paced series, I kept seeing the movie in my head. This second book is like the first, action and adventure that's screaming to be made into a movie, and the maps are fantastic,- what a great addition! I read to my kids every night before bed. It is always more fun when we can find books that they enjoy and I enjoy reading. This book reads very fast and clips along at an exciting pace that keeps the kids begging for more. As the second book in a trilogy it builds well on the first and has all of us excited for the next!

What a wonderful book of imagination and encouragement for children to explore their world. This book would be exceptional for children to read and learn to free up their imagination even when others do not agree. It is well written and well illustrated. What a great gift for the holidays!!

As a school librarian in a elementary school I was delighted to find this book. The illustrations were beautiful - colorful and so detailed. The children were drawn to looking at the pictures. The wording was perfectly geared to keep their attention. So glad I discovered this treasure.

I really love this book. It is visually stunning and has a lovely story and message that empowers sensitive and gifted kids to embrace their gifts. Adding it to my "go to" list for gifts for the kids in my life, and the parents, too! Thank you Jenine Lori for creating this beauty!

This book might be good for younger kids who are just past learning to read, I would compare it to a Little Golden Book level of reading. Everything included in the book can be learned or read for free on the website as promotional materials.I thought the book was going to have some plans, ideas or maps to follow. This book badly needed editing and barely clears the threshold of being a proper book. There are grammatical errors, fonts change randomly, etc. Most disappointing of all, all the pictures that looked so beautiful on-line are printed in black and white and often distorted because they were not formatted correctly for print! Given that the "Look Inside" feature claimed to be showing the print edition, I think this is deceptive advertising by Amazon. In terms of content, it is not a travel guide as much as a somewhat random collection of tips. Sure, some of the tips look pretty good, but you will not get by with just this guide. There are very few maps, there is no index, and very scant information on basics, like getting around by train, etc. I am really disappointed and almost sent it back, but my husband had already started marking in it.

A great travel guidebook anyone could ever read. I usually used google for guidance during travelling because I thought could find the simplest, easiest, and quickest ways to plan my itinerary but this book is better than any typical travel guidebook on google. It does not simply list things-to-do or must-go-places, it helps you make the most of your trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. Interesting travel tips and exact times for certain areas should be toured are really helpful.

This is probably the simplest (in a great way!) and easiest to read travel book I have ever purchased. My favorite thing about this e-book is that it has brilliant pictures that show you the culture and sights in Japan. The book really has all you need for a short getaway to Japan and if you’re feeling overwhelmed in trying to figure out where or how to start planning your Japan trip. I definitely recommend this book if Japan is on your travel list or even if you’re just thinking about going there on day! I’m excited to start planning my trip to Japan soon.

Decent enough and inexpensive supplemental guidebook with some useful tips, and some not so great.... The maps mostly aren’t legible, so that’s a shame, though you can find most anything online with good resolution now. This should not be your go to book for a trip to Japan, but it can help whittle down destinations if you’re feeling overwhelmed. I wasn’t thrilled with the last 15 pages being excerpts and adverts for other publications, I can see a page or two of other products, not 15. I am also in complete disagreement with one of the bonus tips too, it is suggested in the Kyoto section to skip the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Temple) in favor of the Kinkaku-ji (Gold Temple), they are not “almost the same” and I would argue that anyone with half a soul would prefer the less gaudy and beautifully serene Ginkaku-ji....

Great book, very interesting, good writing and great illistrations. Glad I took the time to read through it. Even though I don't intend to travel to Japan anytime soon I still enjoyed this a lot. It's always nice to have the knowledge available. I especially enjoyed the illistrations in this book, made reading this more enjoyable.

This book is just what we need. It will accompany us with Must-See Japan by Tom Fay. I'm disappointed in the Westerner's review of this book as poorly written grammatically with non-color photos. This is a little book written by Japanese natives, not Westerners. The insights and tips are more important than non-essential grammar and flashy photos. The price is cheap by comparison to other travel books and it gives just the information one needs to negotiate Japan - by Japanese tour guides themselves! Bravo!

This book provides a light amount of detail on the most important places to visit on a trip to Japan. But it is lacking in 3 important items that I could not believe were missing from a travel guide. There is not a single map of any area discussed or even a map of Japan itself. Second, there are no page numbers?! Third, which goes hand in hand with the lack of page numbers, there is no index of what is in the guide. The Table of Contents list chapters but without page numbers you have to constantly fan through the pages to find a chapter. OK, so I added color coded tabs to everything which made it more acceptable, but why should a reader have to do this? Can't recommend it.

Filled with great tips to travel in Japan. This book is not the typical travel guide that simply listed things to do and places to visit with no consideration for travelers who travel on tight or flexible budget. This book gives you tips on how to experience the full fun of Japan as well as gives you estimation on how much it will cost. I recommend it to people who are looking at a complete guide to travel in Japan.
