Normally by the time one reaches the fifth in a series, disappointment sets in and the reader is left adrift by the author way out in left field. It does not happen in this continuation story for one second. The action continues, the planning for a battle heats up and the residents of Shiloh Ranch and their neighbors ready for the fights of their lives. And, Coach Casey and his Tiger Team are ready, willing and able to assist in whatever manner possible. Family and friends continue to be strong components in this book, as well.Some things that I truly appreciated are: the strong female characters (including Alex and the Feisty Fifteen), the information at the beginning of the book which served to jog my memory concerning the preceding books, the humor interjected throughout including that from Ms. Rhoda, and the history lesson concerning the Shiloh Meeting House during the Civil War. In addition, I found the prayer of Coach Casey most appropriate for the situation. To paraphrase Coach Casey from another place in the book: All about teamwork! Talk to each other instead of about each other. What a difference it would be in today's world if humanity acted like this!Alex is such a mature person at the age of 15. She has the mental acuity of a true warrior and am looking forward to the next book to see how she develops further. Her analogy using golf in times of crisis was spot-on, as well - 'Play focused and emotionless'. Just excellent perception from a teenager. There is also a brief mention of forgiving what we can not forget in life. That is also something to think about in one's life.Action abounds throughout this one and it starts at the beginning and continues to the last page. And, the last page will leave the readers shaking their heads in disbelief. Guaranteed to be a real shocker and leave you counting the days until the next book is available.Most highly recommended and for multiple reasons - solid plot, excellent development of characters (new and old) and action throughout.
It was with much trepidation that I started reading the fifth book in this series. After how the third book had ended, I wasn’t sure what to expect in this one. As I started to read, I loved how it picked up right where the last one had ended so I didn’t miss any of the action. I was holding my breath as the group headed in to rescue one of their own but had mixed feelings about what was to come! Would Bobby Akart throw a surprise at us and end one of the character’s lives? One of the group that had come so far during the turbulent times? I sat holding my breath and crossing my fingers as my eyes flew over the pages! Actually, I had a lot of moments holding my breath through this book, along with yelling out loud, swearing a little…OK…maybe more than a little and also a couple of fist pumps! The group holds things together through the book despite having all hell thrown at them. With more people joining in the fight against those who want everything for themselves, was victory just over the hill? I was happy to see that they did receive a small respite for a short while until the ending and BOY!!! WHAT and ending it is! I never saw it coming!!! This is my favorite book in this series so far and definitely recommend it along with the whole series to anyone who is looking for an amazing story to sink your teeth into!
I have read each and every one of Bobby Akart's books and have never failed to leave unsatisfied. His books have left me setting on the edge of my seat every time. Hornet's Nest is no exception.The Black Out series is an eye opener for anyone who does not believe bad things can happen to good people. My wife was not a great believer that the world could collapse into chaos with a single event, but after readin 36 Hours she realized that this can happen through a natural disaster as well as EMPs or bombs or invasions by foreign powers. The series takes you from the very beginning when you only have 36 hours to prepare for what could be a loss of our power grid into the terrible aftermath of something like this happening.The series explores what the average family must face and how to steel their spine to overcome this kind of disaster. Hornet's Nest is the most exciting book I have read in a long time. It shows what a group of people just like you, me, your neighbors or family can do with grit and perseverance against the evil that could grip a world brought to it's knees by a natural disaster!I highly recommend this book to all my family and friends, but more importantly the series is spellbinding and will come as one of the most enjoyable read in years.The characters are not only well drawn but feel like you can put a face of a friend or family member to each one. The good guys are the kind of people you want to visit at their home or have over for dinner and a beer. The bad guys are the kind that makes you realize you must be prepared for the collapse and aftermath no matter what else you do.Find Bobby Akart and enjoy many hours of reading fun and excitement!!!!
Wow, wow, and WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't really give too much of the plot away without ruining it, but suffice to say, Bobby has written yet another smash hit with the gang at Shiloh. Another reviewer said it never hit the ground, and they are right. The action and suspense is non stop from jump. This is the 5th in an episodic format of the Blackout series and one should start from the beginning or at the very least #4. The action picks up right where #4 stopped. Young Alex has really grown throughout the series and is a serious bad ass ! This book ran the whole gamut of emotions and still leaves you wondering how or if the Ryman's will survive !
This series just keeps getting better and better! Think you'd be willing to follow a 15 year old girl into battle??? I bet you would if that girl was Alex, I know I would! Thanks to Bobby Akart, we see just how much common sense our kids can have, if only we would teach them. This book, and the series have so many highs and lows, it's quite the emotional roller coaster! I gotta say though, I wanted to kick somebody's a$$ at the end of this one. Definitely a 5 star book by a 5 star author!
