Bernard M. Patten, MD (Seabrook, TX), now retired, was formerly the chief of the Neuromuscular Disease Division, vice chairman of the Department of Neurology, and attending neurologist at the Baylor College of Medicine. He now lectures in clear thinking, mental gymnastics, logic, and neuroscience at Rice University and the Women’s Institute of Houston. Using this for a high school class I teach on logic. It works extremely well since it approaches the book chapter by chapter. He gets a little off topic sometimes (trying to pull real-life political examples in) but overall, a great way to understand the logic of Alice Adventure's in Wonderland!

easy and simple
I got the book to get some entertaining examples of logical fallacies. It was modestly useful.The book is a running commentary on Alice's Adventure in Wonderland. For some parts of the book there is an analysis of the kind of logic or argumentation used. In some cases, the text of the book has to be stretched or twisted to fit the logic, but there are also a number of nice examples. With respect to the logic, I found its description somewhat disorganized.The discussion of the logic is not very deep, and if you are expecting a systematic logical analysis of Alice I think you will be disappointed. Much of what is included is a running commentary and very simple. In the latter chapters I found the author to be belaboring the obvious. Also I thought several of the examples could have been analyzed more concisely. For example, in one place he uses a distribution fallacy argument where a simpler affirming the consequent could have been used.The author seems very opinionated and this was at first quite annoying. I was also disappointed in his use of juvenile sexual innuendo, and his shallow remarks on ethics and monotheism. If he is looking for the sources of murder and war in human history, he might consider the 20th century, the worst in history by far, and its great anti-religious champions, the communists and the Nazis.The author refers to his ability to use deduction to deny the existence of (a type of) God without giving it. This seemed like a kind of unforgivable "anti-God McCarthyism".The bottom line: this is supposed to be a book about clear thinking, as illustrated in Alice. Much of the analysis of Alice is somewhat contrived or obvious, and the book has a personal bias that detracts from its goal.
