Well, the positive reviews fooled me. This book has no fabulous insights and reveals no "hidden natures." If you are at all familiar with Jung, or with literary symbolism, or you have a working brain in your skull, you will find nothing in this book you don't already know. Seriously.What the book does is list out various symbols or symbol themes and give standard "this is what this means/symbolizes/suggests" info. Then it provides some examples of the symbol as used in this or that film. All of which wouldn't be that bad IF the book went beyond the brain-dead obvious Symbolism 101 stuff. Or if the examples presented were not either achingly obvious or piss poor examples, frankly.But don't take my word for it, click the "look inside" feature and read what the book as to say about Astronomy and/or Composition as symbols. Then look at the examples she lists. If that stuff represents new insight to you, then buy the book. If you find the symbolism on offer as rather obvious and the examples to be less than revealing, you can rest assured that the remainder of the book carries on in exactly the same manner.Trust me, if you paid attention in high school English, or have read any Jung, or Joseph Campbell, or have had ANY intro to symbolism in the past, this book is not worth buying.If you actually ARE in the markt for a beginner's-level intro to symbolism, a much better intro to story symbolism can be found in How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines

Same goes for the “In Media” heading. The “Use” heading gives you examples of how you can put it to use in your own work. Then on to “Written Description”. Very subtle, but if you go back and watch the movie it will practically jump out at you.The end of the book has a great index that cross references concepts, colors, symbols, etc. It is definitely a book worth having in your reference library whether you write screenplays, books, plays or short stories. Smith includes stills from the movies that she uses as examples. This really helps you wrap your head around the concepts she is teaching in the book. “Symbols • Images • Codes; The Secret Language of Meaning in Film, TV, Games, and Visual Media” is an unusual, but extremely valuable tool to have in your writing arsenal.

She even tells readers to keep this book next to their computer when they're writing. It's great advice. Symbols can communicate so much. I love symbols like the Mockingjay in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. Smith covers a variety of different symbols, such as numbers and fire. She explains what the symbol, how it's been understood to mean throughout story history, and she gives examples of the symbol being used in film and other story mediums. She gives tips on how to use the symbols in your own writing, even giving advice on how to describe the symbol.
