The book is a very nice introduction, and having read through the whole book I can say the author really cared about making the book accessible and understandable. One thing that stood out to me is that the author included the answers to each and every exercise, usually with a full explanation as to how one gets to the answer. There are two caveats though:(1) the mathematical background is mostly covered in the book, but prospective readers should have some familiarity with differential geometry and calculus of variations, for motivation if nothing else, and (2) the book does not generally go into great depth on any particular subject. In other words, no one should buy this book as anything other than an introduction, but it excels as an intro to relativity.

I've read many books on general relativity, taken a course in it, and have done research that uses it. Ordinarily, I would not have considered buying another introduction. But the sample pages on Amazon's web site suggested that Boehmer had unusual skill in making concepts more digestible. That has been borne out. Boehmer's brief paragraph on the Lie derivative explained more clearly what it accomplishes and how to calculate it than have all of the other books I've used.

One of the most approachable introductions to the subject that I have seen. Gives the physical results and does not bury the reader with tensors or differential geometry. Has solutions to ALL exercises, which I found to be an extremely helpful learning tool.

General Relativity (GR) is a theory of the geometric properties of spacetime. At the time Einstein embarked on his mission, the idea of geometrizing the different forces of nature, was a huge stab in the dark. And although Einstein at best was considered just an average mathematician, those he sought to help him, his friend Marcel Gross and David Hilbert, in particular, convinced him that differential geometry was a suitable way to formulate a consistent and physically meaningful theory of gravity.Since, moving from Newtonian to Einsteinian geometry required mathematical formalizations on geometric objects in arbitrary curved spaceinstead of just in normal 3-space, differential geometry, affording the use of cartesian tensors, was indeed the perfect tool.Among other advantages, tensors gave Einstein the ability to operate “coordinate-free” in curved space. Thus, through tensor calculus, differential geometry became the workhorse of Einstein’s analysis in developing the theory of GR.When they are applied precisely in local curved-space environments, conveniently, it turns out that tensors are isometric to analogous structures in 3-space.Functionally, this made the marriage between Newtonian and Einsteinian geometries complete — although not less difficult. The bookkeeping alone remained horrendous in itself. This is true mainly because of the structural analogies between the tangent vector in 3-space, and its corresponding vector (and dual vector) spaces, in curved space. To make these connections, requires a dazzling amount of keeping track of indices. What simplified everything in the end, was that it turns out that these three structures are isomorphic and thus have “functionally exploitable” equivalences that allow manifolds to do the rest of the heavy lifting. The real payoff in the bookkeeping thus occurs once Newtonian physics in 3-space is converted to Einsteinian physics in curved space — which mathematically is no easy task but gets to the heart of the matter. To its credit, this book outlines the mathematical details in chapter one, of what needs to be done structurally, and why it is necessary. Only then does the author turn to the minimum mathematical formalizations needed to do so.Knowing where we are headed and how we are to get there, with the minimum amount of mathematical formalisms, makes understanding Remannian geometry so much easier once we get there. All of the hard work is done up front in chapter one before we get there.Chapter two introduces Einstein’s field equations. After covering the preliminaries (Newtonian gravity, special relativity, Maxwell’s equations, and geodesics), he gets down to the business of explaining the field equations. However, the author does not stop there. His explanations are general enough to take us right up to the gates of Cosmology.Minus the exercises, which are all worked out, I believe it would be difficult to find a more thorough or understandable explanation of General Relativity in under 100 pages. I did not do the exercises nor have I read chapter three. Five stars

This is the fourth text I have studied on GR. I am a mathematician by training not a physicist. I found this book to be clear and concise, perhaps not as rigorous as I am use to seeing. But overriding this is all exercises are worked out and there is errata available. For me, I found this book to be the key I was looking for in my understanding of the theory at a basic level. I can recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in General Relativity and desirers to follow a self-study course.

Excellent book, it covers the required mathematics in a very clear and thorough way. The exercises have solutions. Also, unlike some other mathematics books I got on kindle, the equations read well on kindle.
