Mindy Lighthipe's excellent book works for both the beginner and intermediate artist and perhaps the more advanced artist seeking instruction to botanical and bird art. She has excellent introductions to graphite and color with graphite hardness range charts with exercises to build one's own personal charts as well as color chart and color mixing charts to test one's range of pigments with advice on a limited palate to begin with and advice on supplies beyond pencil and pigments, such as paper, erasers, palettes, etc. The books is generously illustrated with charts and color photographs, including ones from her online courses, and this book would be a wonderful supplement to her online courses, while one need not take the online courses to benefit from the book. (However there is much in the online courses that is not covered in the book, so don't feel that that the online courses would be redundant. Mindy Lighthipe is a very lively teacher on her online course and a wonderful demonstrator and there is much to learn from viewing her technique. Unfortunately, she has yet to make a video course of her bird drawing or color pencil technique yet, but that is no criticism of the bo ok, but rather a plus that at least we have her bird techniques here. If only she had covered her butterfly techniques here also! I am sure t that she will someday soon.) Mindy's discussion on perspective is very helpful, at least to me, and by discussion I mean the heavily illustrated pages demonstrating the terms and definitions commonly used. It helped clear up some questions I had held for many years and could not get quite cleared up. She also covers cast shadows. Her armature drawings are extremely helpful for preparing for finally beginning painting and really clinch turning the 2D drawing into a convincing 3D representation on paper. This is a very useful bookend you should definitely get it if you would like to begin drawing and painting, even if you are not concerned about what subject matter. Botanical and bird art are very good subject matter to begin with and this is a very good approach. See also on Youtube her free demonstrations and give some thought to saving up and signing up for one of her online classes.

Received my copy today and very impressed with the contents! I'm new to watercolor and botanical, plus I had already purchased a couple of Billy Showell's and and a few other Kindle books on the subject. However this book not only has an excellent teaching guide, but it blows my other botanical books away! :) I'm so glad I took the chance and purchased this book before it even had been reviewed.

I had never taken an art class before taking one with Mindy, and now realize that she was the best teacher I ever had in my art career. I'm so happy that when I opened her book, I was immediately taken back to her class and the excellent fundamentals she taught me. Anyone can pick up this book and, regardless of skill-level, create something beautiful. Even now, as a more practiced artist, I find that the exercises help me to improve my own art style and push me even further to do my best. I can't recommend highly enough.

Really love this book. It is absolutely gorgeous and the artist provides clear details and instructions. It is so nice when artists are generous enough to show how their work comes together. Even including little details like dealing with wax bloom or scanning the finished piece.

I actually bought the book hoping to have plenty of beautiful bird illustrations. But there are quite a lot of botanical information and detailed illustrations with plenty of sound advice and superb drawings and paintings of mostly botanical illustrations and she has an amazing eye for plenty of detail! Wouldn't recommend to the absolute beginner I think they as I did become overwhelmed in the painting and drawing process. Might leave beginner's frustrated due to lack of skill!?It's completely worth the price!

This is a lovely book and I do recommend it but I'm not sure that artists who are more knowledgable about birds and flowers will find it as useful but I will be buying it for a young artist who will .

As a beginner in botanical art and watercolor I've taken all of Mindy Lighthipe's online classes and highly recommend. Her exceptional teaching style and experience has helped me to achieve my goals. Lighthipe is an exceptional teacher...clear, concise, and practical in her approach. She offers easy to follow lessons that build one upon another and this book is no exception. I have other books on drawing, watercolor and botanical art and Mindy's is my favorite thus far. A definite go to resource that I will use time and time again.

What a wonderful book! A must have for anyone who loves to draw or paint. Great for the beginner and even advanced artists. I can't wait to get started!

Purvis' engaging and informative study of two Atlanta churches, one Episcopal and one Presbyterian, whose senior pastors are women, is not only an excellent contribution to the study of congregational life and leadership, but also a model of ethnographic writing. The author is a good storyteller who lets the stories of these communities and their leaders unfold; there is as much to be learned from the style as from the content of the book. That is not to diminish the content, though. Two congregations is a small sample, but here it is an impressively deep one. Purvis' suggestion that "the combination of conventional roles in unconventional ways" helps "regender those roles and widen the range of possible social constructs for the process of gendering itself" is offered with appropriate caution, but it is thoroughly grounded and should prove fruitful for other researchers. Don't let the title restrict the audience; this is a gem, of interest to anyone who seeks a better understanding of communities, organizational change, or leadership. Steve Schroeder

Letty Mandeville Russell (1929-2007) was a feminist theologian who taught at Yale Divinity School, who also wrote/edited books such as Dictionary of Feminist Theologies,Human Liberation in a Feminist Perspective--A Theology, etc.She wrote in the Preface to this 1993 book, "This book is called 'Church in the Round' because a metaphor is needed to speak about a vision of Christian community of faith and struggle that practices God's hospitality... a church struggling to become a household of freedom, a community where walls have been broken down so that God's welcome to those who hunger and thirst for justice is made clear." (Pg. 12)She asks, "How do we develop a feminist theory about the church that makes sense of women's reality and experiences of oppression and yet continues to affirm Jesus Christ as the source of life and connection in the Christian community?" (Pg. 21) She adds, "from my point of view as a feminist theologian, (feminism) represents a search for liberation from all forms of dehumanization on the part of those who advocate full human personhood for all of every race, class, sex, sexual orientation, ability, and age. This means that men can also be feminists if they are will to advocate for women." (Pg. 22)On a personal note, she states, "I myself am an ordained clergyperson in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)... (I) would have left ... to be ordained elsewhere if the denoomination had not begun to ordain women... just before my last year of seminary. I must confess, however, that the growing alienation and disillusionment with the church and clerical structures that so many women share are part of my life as well... The only reason I remain ordained at this point in my life is because... I stand in solidarity with many sisters and brothers who are denied the opportunity to be considered for ordination..." (Pg. 53)She argues, "Hospitality calls us to be a community of faith and struggle that connects with those at the margin and celebrates the way God has called a diverse people, so that we may all share together at God's welcome table!" (Pg. 181)This is an interesting and challenging book by a famed theologian, and deals frankly with a number of issues that are still very "current."

The Church in the Round by Letty M. Russell is an inspiring and thought provoking book. It also addresses the mundane problems that confront most parishes. It is both practical and applicable to what most local pastors must deal with and confront. However, she also has the added perspective of a female pastor serving in a male dominated institution. But, her ecclesial goals and mine (a male pastor) are the same. She desires a congregation in the round where persons are greeted and accepted with hospitality, where growth and nurture are shared, and where parishioners and clergy gather about a round table of equality, with no head nor foot. I applaud her stance for a congregational structure based on talent, abilities and shared responsibilities. Patriarchal, hierachial and pyramid organizations are counterproductive to a sense of community. This is true in both the ecclesial and secular worlds. Domination and subordination have no place anywhere, but especially in the Church. Russell even proposes the possible elimination of the ordained clergy. I do not know if I am ready to eliminate the ordained clergy, but she has certainly identified the problem. The elimination of clergy could solve the problems she states, but I think that it would create different ones. I think that it would lead to a greater privatization of faith and create parishes of like minded individuals unable to see their own prejudices. This could result in the marginalized being pushed under or completely away from the table. Someone has to have a historic and theological perspective from which to proclaim the prophetic word on behalf of the marginalized. Someone has to be an enabler of the marginalized. I agree that clergy should not dominate nor dictate, but there is a legitimate role of prophet, enabler, teacher and companion for our journey through this valley of tears. Russell's views are shaped by her community of educated, intellectual, and progressive thinkers, many of whom are seminarians, denominational leaders, and social activists. This community is blessed with an abundance of knowledgeable, skilled, and motivated persons willing to be involved in ministry. This is not the case in many blue collar parishes. There parishioners have either bought into the domination system or have been handicapped by it. Many of these victimized parishioners are unwilling or unable to be a part of a participatory democracy and shared ministry. This is especially true of mill village parishes. Yet, on the other hand, they may engage in total rebellion because the clergy are the only authority figures safe to attack. The round table approach and the circular web type organization, like the YWCA's which she wrote about, is my style of ministry. It has been received with varying degrees of acceptance, but no overwhelming success. Yet, the goal of a Church in the round is a worthy endeavor. Another important issue addressed was the doctrine of election. Russell recognized that many Christians see their religion as a grantor of privilege where the believers are blessed and the rest damned. The saved are the insiders and the others are the outsiders. Russell reminds us that Christians are called to serve, not to be served. We are not given privilege but a mission. She writes that Karl Barth reminds us, "that God's election is focused not on a particular people but on the one who represents the chosen people, Jesus Christ. Jesus himself is both the elected one and the one who in suffering, death and resurrection elects us all to faith and service" (page 171).

An enchanting treasure of a book, that vividly brings to life, several of Wright's unbuilt aesthetic masterpieces, as well as the fascinating human stories behind many of his realized structures in the San Francisco Bay Area. The combination of stunning renderings, floor plans, and photographs, are counterpointed by Turner's skillful narrative, that often gives you the feeling of almost being there, witnessing the positive and negative exchanges between Wright, his associates, and clients. This book is a "must have" for anyone building a Wright library!While living in San Francisco until 2001, I had the good fortune to know Aaron Greene and many of the Norther California Taliesin Fellows. They re-kindled my love of Wright's work, that started when I was a student of architecture, at Cooper Union in New York City. After moving to Northwestern Washington, I contacted Jim Zervas, who studied with Wright, and his associate, Terry Brown, designed a Usonian style small home in the woods, for my wife and me. Living in a Wright-inspired home, and reading books that celebrate his works, like the Turner volume, generate a daily peak experience.

If you pick this up at a store and just flip through it, alot of the influence chapters seem like 'duh' moments and suggestions, (for example, sex sells) and if that's all you get out of it you'll be missing alot of value. For me, the value of the book was revealed when I was re-designing my company's website and coming up with advertisement banners - having all the main influences, examples, and a walk-through on how they work and why really helped me crystallize the value of my brand and bring to the surface (and to the eyes of my customers) some of the influences in the book I had basically otherwise overlooked. I also now more consciously incorporate these influences when talking to wholesale customers. Overall well worth the money for this book. Oh, it's also beautifully designed, hardy hardcover with thick pages, if you're into that sort of thing.

Very cool book. Clever writing that's clear to understand and not too wordy. It's already gotten me re-thinking the way I approach selling myself in a few ways. Nice.

I thought there might be a surprise hidden inside this basic romance novel. I'm not a fan of girl meets boy she wants to ignore but falls in love kinda stuff. Three stories all of which end up exactly where you figure they will after the first few chapters. I was disappointed in the mediocre story line, you see it coming, you just keep hoping there might be something you missed and that it will end up be more exciting than it actually ever is. Nice easy light reading but not exactly compelling or gripping.

Predictable and somewhat boring, this book does little to actually illuminate history and instead relies on well-worn tropes and romantic plot lines to attempt to move the story forward. So shallow is this novel that its plot could be plucked from its WWII setting and dropped into any other—WWI, Vietnam, Victorian, Edwardian, American Civil War, etc.—and very little would actually need to change. If you like soapy, one-dimensional, predictable romances, you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, it is not worth the money and an insult to the genre.

This was an awesome book......couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened with the characters.Well written and kept you wanting to find out the ending. WWII novels are so interesting to me.Thanks for an awesome book.

I liked the detail of what life must have been like around the 1940 time framein England and in the Cornwall region for young ladies. A great yarn in particularregarding the principle character Louise and her difficult journey though the Londonraids and survival of personal impacts delivered to her and overcoming these tolive her dream life in California.

I love the timeless theme of women breaking free for the lives of duty and obligation they were expected to live. I didn’t know about the Gunner Girls or about women serving in the line of fire. I thought the twist at the end of Louise’s story probably happened more then it’s used in WWII fiction stories.Explanation of Rating: 4/5: I was very wrapped up in finishing this book.Favorite Quotes: “It would be dangerous; but what they would do would matter.” “Do you ever worry that the more you dig into Iris’s past the more likely it is that you will find something you wish you didn’t know? I always enjoy historical fiction and this book was no exception. The book takes place in two time frames; current London and World War II. In both story lines, the women are trying hard to find themselves despite one being pressured to stay home and fulfill her mother’s wishes for her future and the other recovering from a disastrous first marriage.The role of women in the ATS has been, like the part played by women at Bletchley Park, a well kept secret. The story of their training, their assignment, their friendships, romances and heart breaks is fascinating.The romance in modern times was predictable but fun. The romance during the war was tragic and doomed but made a good vehicle for showing how women were regarded at that time.Not great literature but an easy, enjoyable and educational read.

About a young innocent girl from a small town who leaves her home during WWII to join up and meets this charming handsome pilot....they fall in love..there is a twist to the story.....A woman who finds her diary is also living her own story. Fun easy read, interesting story. I learned information about WWII which was new to me: women serving in the military fighting for England; Aiming Antiaircraft Guns. My wife liked the book, but warned me it was “chick lit”. I enjoyed it greatly even if it was written from the female point of view. I am looking forward to Ms. Kelly’s next book which I understand will be about another WWII woman’s story. (Full disclosure: I know Julia Kelly personally and can report that she is a lovely person.)

This Kindle edition English translation version of 'The Papyrus of Ani' by E.A. Wallis Budge does not include the mythological account in Egyptian hieroglyphs as the printed version of the same author does, which I also own. I would like to see in the future a Kindle edition fo the 'Papyrus of Ani' (Book of the Dead) that includes the Egyptian hieroglyphs and their English translation, transcription and transliteration as related by E.A. Wallis Budge. It is however a good travel companion for reading on my Kindle application of my laptop because I previously had expensive books that were too bulky or suffered damage and loss.

Loaded with historical facts. Fine print. If you are a history buff you would like it.

Well, it's not a hard read, but the fascination comes from the glimps it gives into the heart of this ancient and intriguing culture. It takes a bit of intentional reading but it's worth it. You will not regret adding this book to your thoughts.
