I have three invaluable reference books covering Rudolf Laban’s theories and techniques, Laban for All (Newlove & Dalby), Actor Training the Laban Way (Adrian), and Laban for Actors and Dancers (Newlove). Over time I have found that I tend to use them in that order. Unless you’re a lover of books, as is I, I suggest only purchasing the first two books.I believe that adding John Dalby as co-author of Laban for All takes Newlove’s earlier work, Laban for Actors and Dancers, to a higher level of readability and usefulness. It describes Laban’s work in more understandable but equally detailed language.While Laban for All teaches us about Laban theories and techniques, Actor Training the Laban Way puts those theories and techniques into practice. What it adds to this triad of books are exercises for the application of Laban.When working with actors, I’ve found that I first go to Laban for All to explain particular concepts. I then go to Actor Training the Laban Way for exercises that apply those concepts.One might argue that the two books should be combined into one but I feel that would only cause clutter. For me, having one book to describe Laban and a second for its application is much more useful.I feel that dancers must be able to act, go beyond mere perfection of body movement to the emotional expressiveness of the character they are portraying. Likewise, an actor must be able to “dance.” That is, go beyond mere vocalization of lines and movement through space and time. Actors, as with dancers, must be able to use their body to express the essence of the character they portray. Laban for All and Actor Training the Laban Way offer ways to enhance those abilities. They would be worthwhile additions to your reference collection whether you are an actor or a dancer.

Excellent text for those studying dance and choreography, or, like me, teaching movement classes to children and adults.

I have studied Laban for my professional career as a dance/movement therapist - this book has been extremely informative and helpful. I also have many friends who are actors and dancers. I have shared this book and information I have acquired from it with them and they have also found it to be most helpful in their careers.

I was thoroughly impressed with this book. The authors did a thorough job of explaining the system of Laban and its relevance to dance, but also bringing it down to the level of an utter novice, such as myself. They also provided detailed descriptions of exercises that are easy to follow and do and quite rewarding. Where this book really shines however, is in the theory of movement that Laban created around space and time and other elements he deemed significant to truly understanding the body. I feel, as a result of doing the exercises, that I have a much closer relationship to my body and a much keener appreciation of movement.

I got the book to get some entertaining examples of logical fallacies. It was modestly useful.The book is a running commentary on Alice's Adventure in Wonderland. For some parts of the book there is an analysis of the kind of logic or argumentation used. In some cases, the text of the book has to be stretched or twisted to fit the logic, but there are also a number of nice examples. With respect to the logic, I found its description somewhat disorganized.The discussion of the logic is not very deep, and if you are expecting a systematic logical analysis of Alice I think you will be disappointed. Much of what is included is a running commentary and very simple. In the latter chapters I found the author to be belaboring the obvious. Also I thought several of the examples could have been analyzed more concisely. For example, in one place he uses a distribution fallacy argument where a simpler affirming the consequent could have been used.The author seems very opinionated and this was at first quite annoying. I was also disappointed in his use of juvenile sexual innuendo, and his shallow remarks on ethics and monotheism. If he is looking for the sources of murder and war in human history, he might consider the 20th century, the worst in history by far, and its great anti-religious champions, the communists and the Nazis.The author refers to his ability to use deduction to deny the existence of (a type of) God without giving it. This seemed like a kind of unforgivable "anti-God McCarthyism".The bottom line: this is supposed to be a book about clear thinking, as illustrated in Alice. Much of the analysis of Alice is somewhat contrived or obvious, and the book has a personal bias that detracts from its goal.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in terms of understanding the building blocks of how to value a business. Although I have worked in the financial services industry for many years, my job only recently shifted into a role that required a stronger understanding about valuation. There are a number of valuation texts out there, but what really grabbed me was the Q&A format of this one – it was very easy to understand and built up to the concepts gradually. Also, the authors did a terrific job of not just throwing a bunch of tables and charts at you; they want you to understand the logic behind each stage of the process. So, this book is a little more text heavy than most – but I actually found that to be a positive. It's like having a tutor spend extra time with you to explain the subject matter, rather than just drilling it into your memory without understanding the rationale behind the issues. Even still, this book is a lot more than just a teach-in on how discounted cash flow analysis works. There’s an entire chapter on how to bridge the valuation gap between buyers and sellers using things like earnouts and seller takeback financing. Those are topics that I haven’t seen in any other valuation texts. Although I’m not quite at that level yet, what I think is great is that I know I will be using this book as a reference for the next couple of years as understanding of valuation increases and I’m ready to go into the advanced topics. I do wish that the publisher had printed the entire valuation models at the back of the book so I could thumb through them. However, all the models are available online for free – not just as PDFs, but in Excel format so they’re interactive. This was incredibly helpful and, again, yet another feature that I had not seen in any other books. The authors also have a Twitter feed that I’ve signed up for, where they periodically post helpful M&A articles. Overall, I’m really very pleased with the purchase.

I'll start disclosing that I am not a financial professional. This is rather my hobby and I've read this book with the goal of personal development as well as to optimize my individual investment decisions. Many concepts introduced in this book were new to me. Although I've read about valuation multiples and DCF before, I didn't actually understand that this is pretty all the modern company valuation is about. The very good Appendix with the legal precedents concerning company valuation convinced me in that completely. I liked the author's language and humor. The chapter on tax implication of M&A deal structures is also a valuable reading.However, the book also has its weaknesses. Among them is that the text bears no signs of proofing (as if nobody read the manuscript after the author before publication). I mean, it contains a huge number of typos, including numbers (including in the tables). In the Kindle version, some tables are missing and under their titles, you find the tables you've already seen above. The author perfectly described in the relevant chapter that although U.S. GAAP requires that acquired assets be stepped up in financial statements and be depreciated/amortized over a period of useful life whether the deal involves purchase of stock or assets, this doesn't apply to tax basis in stock purchase deals unless the buyer makes a 338 selection; however, in the last M&A model, the author seems to forget about this and starts talking about some tax benefits from stepped-up tax basis after stock acquisition without 338 selection.

This book provides a good overview on basic M&A concepts and rationale, provides a very good foundation on deal structures and tax implications, but then falls far short on valuation and modeling. If you are looking for a book with meat and bones instructing on building comprehensive, fully integrated models, this is not the one.
