My cousin bought this book for me as a young adult when it first came out, and when my daughter started coming out of her room looking like an Oompa Loompa, I knew I had to get her a copy. Youtube tutorials are fun and all, but those girls have their faces far too overdone for everyday make-up, and of course being a teenage girl, mom knows nothing. Cindy Crawford's Basic Face is just that -- the basics. My daughter re-learned how to do her makeup so that she looks like a normal human being, and she's done now in 5 minutes rather than an hour.

I saw this book suggested somewhere on youtube. As the other review listed this book is completely useless for anyone over 12. Very basic introduction. I recommend Bobbi Brown's guide if you're looking to learn technique and useful tips.

I love this book! I think because Cindy Crawford has so much experience with the world of beauty that she cuts through all the bull, and gets to basic stuff if you want to wear make-up but do not want to look like a floozy. Plus, she gives great tips on buying makeup, using makeup, etc. She gives unvarnished but very helpful advice. It is the best book I have seen on beauty tips. Plus the pictures and silver cover are cool too. I am surprised it is not on shelves anymore. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to makeup.

Awesome book. I really learned a lot from this book.

I received this book when I was younger and used to go through the pictures everyday when I was tryign to apply make up before school. I was nostalgic for it, so i ordered it. Its a great book for beginners in make up

Read this book when I was 8 or 9 and loved it. Just read it again and it's still amazing! Literally the best beauty book out there!

I purchased this particular book twenty years ago. I bought this spiral hardcover book which is titled: Cindy Crawford's Basic Face over at a prestigious book store called: Barnes and Noble. I purchased this book in the year 1996. I love this book because it offers a lot of advice on how to apply makeup. As a matter of fact, I have been a super huge fan of Cindy Crawford ever since I was a young teenage girl during the early 1990s. I have enjoyed her work. I especially enjoy Cindy's great sense of fashion. Cindy Crawford not only knows how to apply makeup, but Cindy also knows how to pose in front of the camera. Cindy Crawford is extremely professional and she is very smart, educated, and very level--headed. I love Cindy Crawford. I have a lot of respect for her, and most of all I really love her book titled: Cindy Crawford's Basic Face. Now if you are a fan of the very lovely and talented Cindy Crawford, I recommend that you purchase her spiral hardcover book titled: Basic Face and do not forget to also purchase Cindy's newly released book which is titled: " Cindy Crawford Becoming" This particular hardcover book was recently released on September 29, 2015. You can purchase all of Cindy Crawford's books and accessories here in Amazon. Sincerely, Angelica Vazquez. This Customer Feedback was written on: Sunday, August 7, 2016.

I think people like to bag this book simply because Cindy Crawford wrote it. It's like "oh, she's a model, professionals do her makeup and she has to be too dumb to write anything worthwhile anyway". Actually this is the best book I've ever seen on makeup and the one I'd pick above any other to recommend and I'm a qualified makeup artist myself.A lot of the things you'll find in this book make up the foundation of the course where I studied (the section in beauty as opposed to screen and theatrical). Why? - because it's the essentials of what beauty and everyday makeup is all about. It gives you all the basics and then pointers to enable you to develop your own style. It's also easy to follow, well written and yet very comprehensive.I've personally found that most books by professional makeup artists only appear to help you, but in reality just give a lot of pretty pictures with little workable substance. And if you know what you're looking at, most of their 'tips' and methods arn't that great either. These books have struck me overall as being more for self-promotion then anything else. A makeup artist with a book full of glossy model and celebrity photo's, if it sells well, will instantly become a 'star' makeup artist.Totally recommend this book for actually delivering what it promises to.

Review

"One of my favourite YA books ever. The action! The world-building! The voice! This book kicks so much ass." -- Cale Dietrich, author of The Love Interest "Levenseller presents a fully rounded portrait of a girl whose strength in battle is tempered by her very human anxieties. Rasmira's quest is thrilling, her emotional journey compelling; this adventure sings." --Booklist "Levenseller... presents a female warrior who refuses to believe that crying makes one weak and that strength is not feminine. Through Rasmira’s inner monologue, teens will learn that teamwork and friendship are important and that failure makes one strong. This high-octane novel is filled with mythical creatures and showcases a heroine who wants to be a warrior, a woman, and a leader." --School Library Journal"Witty banter brings levity, and of course Rasmira finds romance with one of the boys, but the real gratification lies in Rasmira’s transformation from broken, betrayed, girl to resourceful, confident victor. Her final clash with the god is heart pounding, and her triumph in front of her village and father is satisfyingly righteous." -- The Bulletin for the Center for Children's BooksPraise for Tricia Levenseller: "Levenseller has created a formidable female character who can take care of herself as she makes some hard decisions.” ―School Library Journal on Daughter of a Pirate King“[Levenseller’s] words will pull you in, and there's no escaping them." ―Charlie N. Holmberg, author of The Paper Magician Series, on Daughter of the Siren Queen“With a cunning plot, robust writing, and complicated characters, any reader will enjoy being manipulated in Levenseller's capable hands.” ―Anna Banks, author of the New York Times Bestseller Of Triton, on Daughter of the Pirate King

Rasmira is sabotaged during her warrior trial and the only way to return to her village and regain her honor is to accomplish an impossible task: kill a god. What I loved: 🖤🖤🖤1. Rasmira’s character development. She is undoubtedly the victim, but she is self-aware enough to realize her own mistakes and move forward.2. The “wild” is an immersive fantasy world (Viking influenced) with original beasts, mythology, and magical topography.3. Iric and Soren (from another village) are also banished to the wild and must complete their own impossible tasks based on their individual fears. Overcoming your fears through hard work and friendship is a great theme in this book.4. Plenty of ax-wielding action!5. A slow burn romance that is oh so satisfying. You’ll want to run into the wild and devour this unforgettable read that’s full of action, redemption, and romance!

If you love Tricia Levenseller's Daughter of the Pirate King, you're going to love Tricia's next heroine as she's a tough as nails warrior woman! Warrior of the Wild is Tricia's standalone novel that follows Rasmira, the only female warrior in her village and when she's betrayed by people she thought she knew, she finds herself outcast from her village with an impossible task set before, she should want to seek redemption. This was a fast paced story filled with adventure, surprises galore, and MONSTERS!Rasmira is the only female warrior in her village and she's been trained to follower in her father's, the leader of the village, footsteps. But when she and the other warrior trainees take their final test to prove themselves, Rasmira finds out she has been betrayed by the people she thought she knew. It's not long into the story when we find Rasmira being outcast into the wilds. She's give an impossible task known as a mattugr that basically sets her up for failure in its impossibility. The task? To kill the god that has been terrorizing their villages for years.I was quite surprised that once Rasmira is on her way to her seclusion in the wilds that she encounters two other outcast teens. At the same time, I was actually hoping for something like this to happen because I couldn't imagine reading a 300+ page book about a heroine who didn't get to interact with anyone other than monsters and the god she is tasked with killing. She meets Soren and Irik, two boys who failed their final tests and have their own impossible mattugrs ahead of them. While Rasmira is loathed to let herself trust again, she finds herself doing just that with these boys. They discover that if they have any hope of returning to their homes, they will have to learn to work together.I quite enjoyed Rasmira's interactions with Soren and Irik! And never fear, there is no love triangle here as Irik is already spoken for! But that leaves Soren up for grabs! Soren is the first to "fall," yet Rasmira isn't about to let her heart get broken again and constantly shuts down Soren's attempts. It was rather realistic to see Rasmira being unwilling to trust Soren whatsoever. The way that she was betrayed would definitely leave its scars on you and trusting again wouldn't be easy. But as you can imagine, that begins to change, ever so slowly, over the course of the novel.I really enjoyed Rasmira's character. She wasn't perfect, she had her flaws, but I really liked that she began to learn that about herself and slowly change (in the right ways) to become a better person. She wasn't horrible mind you, but there were little things that get pointed out to her eventually and though it's never stated, you can clearly see her trying to be better. The ending was quite amazing! I loved everything that led up to it and then the grand finale itself! The story leaves us in the perfect place too! It's the way I prefer my series (and standalones) to end! Warrior of the Wild has a lot going for it! It's action packed, there's MONSTERS, seriously scary and deadly monsters, romance, humor, shocking surprises, and growth from lessons learned. It was thought provoking in a roundabout way. There were only a few minor things that bugged me about this. Nothing too extreme, but I feel like I can't say with confidence that it was a flawless read. Sure there were times when I didn't agree with Rasmira's choices, but I feel like that's typical of any book because if she made the choices I wanted her to go for, there wouldn't be a story! Lol. Perhaps I just needed more to the story as well. Just the simple MORE. I think if there was just a little something more to it I would be all over giving this one five stars. It's still a tremendously worthy story that I still highly recommend! It's definitely different from my usual fantasy reads and I really loved the warrior woman vibe it had going! This is a story not to be missed!Overall Rating 4/5 stars

I love Norse Mythology. Well, I love mythology period. I`m a complete sucker for mythology. I enjoy learning what civilizations past, and even people now, turned to when they needed something, anything to believe in. I hopped onto this story after discovering Levenseller through Owlcrate with her Daughter of the Pirate King duology. I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting. I was up until about 3 am I believe.*First off, I have so many little flags of quotes that got me and will be added to my quote book soon. This book, like her others, was full of a self determined and self believing female MC who proves she can break the mold and challenge the way of things. I also enjoyed the difference of the 2 gods. Primarily, one that lives and terrifies the people and one who watches over and embraces her people in warmth.***Also, beware of Torrin...***Also, I want that metal/those rocks***READ IT!!!! AND HER OTHER BOOKS!!!

This book is one full of adventure and "romance" and redemption.Rasmira is banished to the wild after betrayal on multiple fronts. Through her harrowing journey, she makes friends, learns what it means to be a leader, and learns about forgiveness. The romance is definitely YA, well, YA as I wish it would be (making out but no sex). The relationship builds slowly and realistically.Rasmira learns how to be a leader by helping others on their quests. She realizes what true leadership looks like and earns the respect of her fellows. She also learns about forgiveness, as her fellow banished struggle with resentment toward one another. In the end, not everything is perfect (because that's not how real life works), but there is hope for the future.Quick and engaging read. I really enjoyed it.

THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE.Oh my goodness. The book is beautiful to begin with. The story was easy to fall into and the characters are my new besties. I want to be a warrior like Raz. She is awesome and her arc was exactly what I wanted it to be. And Soren. Oh I love him. The setting was easy to follow and the monsters were fantastic. Just everything was wonderful.

This was such an amazing story. One I just could not put down. I am left wanting more wanting the story to continue on! It is so rewarding to have these kick ass women standing up for themselves and kicking butt. I don't think I can read stories any more if the women is portrayed helpless.

I loved this book so much! I love her writing style and strongly recommend if you love this to check out her other books! I loved those as well. I couldn't get enough of this book I didn't want it to end! Just wanted to continue the story as much as I can! Look forward to reading anything by this amazing author!

This book helped me pass the NY bar exam on my 3rd attempt. After using this book, my MBE increased by 19 points. I highly recommend it.

Very helpful for studying MCQs for your exams. The questions do get tricky, purposefully so, and the answers provide sufficient detail as to why the correct answer was the better answer. By quizzing myself using this book, and using AdaptiBar.com*, you should ace your multiple choice exams.*I am not affiliated in any way with AdaptiBar.com. I subscribed to their service, at full cost, and am simply blown away by the "smart" approach they take for quizzing.

A must have whether legal profession or not

This a great tool for gaining a detailed understanding of how to process MBE questions.

I love the questions and I bought this book to prepare for the NC bar. So far, it is very helpful.

The standard you expect from Finz and Emanuel. There needs to be more Civ Pro questions.

Book was in awesome shape!!!

Great practice questions with detailed explanations!

From the Back Cover

Why is justice fair? Why are so many people pursuing spirituality? Why do we crave relationship? And why is beauty so beautiful? N. T. Wright argues that each of these questions takes us into the mystery of who God is and what he wants from us. For two thousand years Christianity has claimed to answer these mysteries, and this renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop shows that it still does today. Like C. S. Lewis did in his classic Mere Christianity, Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader is starting from ground zero with no predisposition to and perhaps even some negativity toward religion in general and Christianity in particular. His goal is to describe Christianity in as simple and accessible, yet hopefully attractive and exciting, a way as possible, both to say to outsides ôYou might want to look at this further,ö and to say to insiders ôYou may not have quite understood this bit clearly yet.ö

I will be 82 years old in two and a half months. Been in and out of church many times. At this point in my life I need a better understanding of Christianity. This was a good place to start.

In other reviews, this book is compared unfavorably to C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." I beg to differ. I'll give you an example. I was visiting with a patient at the hospital where I serve as chaplain. She was unconscious for about a week at the beginning of her stay, so I talked with her husband almost every day. He considers himself "spiritual," but has some problems with Trinitarian theology. I had a hardbound copy of this book in my library. I gave it to him to read and review with me. He loved it! His problem with most churches is in their inability to appreciate what we would call the First and Third Articles of the Creed (God as Father and the Holy Spirit as our "comforter"). He likes both of these Articles! He just can't figure out where Jesus fits in. I believe this book has helped him to rethink his understanding of God. He may not be where I would like him to be, but he respects me for having the convictions of this book. Because of it's emphasis on the First and Third Articles, I think this is a great resource for teaching "spiritual" people in the 21st century why Christianity makes sense.

O.T. Wright is the modern day version of the highly acclaimed Oxford and Cambridge professor, C.S. Lewis, a twentieth century theologian who wrote "Mere Christiananity" and the highly acclaimed "The Screwtape Letters." Wright spends a number of chapters cleverly setting up the true messages he wants to convey. At times, his thinking sounds anything but "simply" Christian but ultimately his book will challenge your process through your endeavor of being the person God wants you to become and helps you to "aha" moments.

Just finished NT Wright's "Simply Christian" and I can't help but gush a little. Its a modern "Mere Christianity" and he is a living C.S. Lewis. I've sensed a fraying in our culture and church when it comes to theme and purpose. Perhaps we have overly diced our Bible and hinged our theologies on favorite fragments...somehow the themes and the hope is lost. Wright weaves the story back together. He's refreshingly fuzzy where life and the Bible get fuzzy and clear and vivid where our souls hunger and break. If you are content with your faith or lack there of don't read this book...otherwise buckle up and enjoy.(P.S. highly recommend getting the kindle book and the audible book and listening and reading together as the Kindle app now flips the pages for you as you listen to the book. Very well read.)

N.T. Wright has an amazing way of teaching challenging subjects in easy to understand ways. He weaves analogy throughout the book, not just as examples to help a single illustration, but often to weave together the whole concept he's addressing. As an amateur theologian, I'm quite impressed with this work, what he teaches, and especially where he challenges the reader and the Church to follow Christ more deeply and authentically.

Wow, another great book from N. T. Wright. This has to be the book of the year for 2006. This is a great book for anyone looking to defend or learn more about Christianity. He deals with two world views that are false throughout the book. One is pantheism or the idea that God is everywhere and in everything or is everything and the other view is deism. Deism is the idea that God created the world but stays distant to it and does not even dream of getting involved in it affairs. He sees the latter as being the idea of God behind left behind type of theology that sees to goal of Christianity as being getting people saved to get them out of this world. Wright's view makes better sense of God and the world. In Wright's view heaven overlaps and interlocks with Earth and is not distant from it and neither is God in everything. The world was created good and became distorted by Adam and Eve's or humanities disobedience. God went to work to restore his good creation by calling Abraham. His seed was to be the means by which the world was put back to rights. The story of the nation of Israel includes slavery, Exodus; judges and kings, tabernacles and Temples being built; disobedience through injustice and idoloatry and all kinds of uncleaness brought about exile. The prophets then came an promised return from Exile. Jesus brings the story of Israel to it climax and brings about New Creation through resurrection. Wright works through this story like nobody else can and then in he end acts as a pastor when it comes to coaching on such things as prayer, Bible reading, fellowship, and sacraments. This is a book that should be read by everyone. It is destined to be a classic.

The author creates a structured approach to providing evidence for Christianity and offers practical advice based upon his evidence. Stated early in the book, the structure includes the longing for justice, the quest for spirituality, the hunger for relationships, and the delight in beauty. After reading this book, I realized how intuitive the points seemed in retrospect. They just made sense, and the structured approach lined everything up in favor of the Christian faith. This differs from my experience with Mere Christianity, where I needed to stop and think after each major point to understand CS Lewis' arguments. Although both books are often recommended for people interested in growing their faith, Simply Christian provides a simpler (no pun intended) starting point than Mere Christianity for the beginner seeking to learn.

I am 3/4 of the way through this book and I love it. Having grown up with a pretty rigid belief in the way a Christian is supposed to view God, church, and worshiping God, this was a fresh, new way of looking at Christianity and belief in Jesus. NT is great at opening ones eyes to how 1st century Christians viewed the idea of God, heaven and Jesus as the messiah and why it makes sense to at least give belief in God a chance.....great book! Highly recommend it.

Review

Provides an accessible yet detailed story of how telescopes are made, the science behind their function, and their promise for future astronomical discoveries. (Science News)Zirker has succeeded in bringing together the past, present and future in this compact and readable book. Through the telescopes, he tells of the people, the science, the technology, the problems, and the future. If you have only one book on the history of astronomy, this should be it. (Charles J. Vukotich, Jr. Astrophile)An excellent guide to how modern astronomy has been pushed by telescope advancement. (James A. Cox Midwest Book Review)Fascinating technical details about how a telescope is made and what the next generation can hope to see. (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin)The book provides an excellent, easy-to-read overview of this and other 20th century telescopes and explains how the major observatories have developed around the world. (Mark Williamson International Space Review)The first paragraph describing a sunset on Mauna Kea is written more in the style of an introduction to a novel than the start of a textbook on astronomical telescopes... I enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it to anyone with an interest in how telescopes are built. (Journal of the British Astronomical Association)A handsome and well-presented book... There is no doubt that An Acre of Glass deserves a place on the shelves of all astronomical libraries. (Fred Watson Observatory Magazine)A wonderfully accessible introduction to the field. (Deborah Jean Warner Technology and Culture)Zirker's An Acre of Glass provides a good overview of post-Palomar era observational astronomy, the ins and outs of its technologies, and a useful entry point into the personalities that drove these impressive developments. After a brief history of the telescope, this is an excellent overview of modern developments in the design and building of telescopes, both ground-based and space telescopes, as well as a discussion of those under construction or planned. Observations that were unthinkable 40 years ago are now routine with new techniques such as interferometry and adaptive optics. Jack Zirker has a facility of explaining complicated ideas and making them accessible to those interested in science or engineering at all levels, but without any "dumbing down.". He also takes time to explain the science that is or will be done with the instruments he describes, thus putting them in proper context. The narrative is greatly enlivened by giving details about the people responsible for the designs and building of these gigantic telescopes, and giving credit where credit is due.I loaned the book to an engineering friend who is equally enthralled, and marvels as I do at what has and is being accomplished.Anyone who wants to know what has made possible many of the extraordinary discoveries in astronomy in the past 30 years can't do better than reading this book.

Everything anyone might want to know about the mind boggling Renaissance were undergoing in astronomical technology. Well written inthat it discusses people as well as tech.

good book on modern and future telescope designs

Excellent history of optical telescopes. also excellent survey of modern monolithic mirrors with description of the segmented telescope.

As the title "An Acre of Glass" suggests, this book is primarily about the building of ever-larger optical telescopes around the world. The author does a credible job with the story, with accurate discussions and generally good writing. If anything detracts from the reader's experience it is the author's diversions into other stories. He breaks the central story between Palomar and the next generation of observatories with a chapter on radio astronomy and an assortment of other astronomy achievements. All important stuff, but just a distraction in this book. It would have been better to have spread the material through the book, or have placed it in an appendix. The chapter on the Hubble space telescope seems similarly perfunctory. I think the book would have been stronger if the author had remained focused on his real story and resisted the urge to pretend to cover a larger subject. But people interested in the development of ever larger optical telescopes will still enjoy this book.

The good things about this book include the sheer range and volume of descriptive material, the copious collection of photographs, diagrams, and illustrations, and the connections the author makes between telescope technology and scientific discovery. My concerns about this book include a certain lack of organization of the material that other reviewers have noted and a lack of tight editing in places. For example on p114 the books says Richard Feynman "identified" the cause of the Challenger disaster. In point of fact the causal link was pointed out to Feynman by those on the inside who understood what had happened and Feynman did a great service by pointing out this out publically in a vivid and unforgettable way. What this digression had to do with telescope technology is unclear at best. On page 85 in discussing the Blanco 4m telescope at Cerro Tololo the text says " a large team from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory announced in 1998 that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. They based their findings on observations made with the Blanco telescope of over seventy five supernovas at huge distances." On page 148 the book then correctly states there were two teams, the Super Nova Cosmology Projects and the High Z Supernova Search and then says "Both groups have used lots of time on 4 meter telescopes, such as Blanco at Cerro Tololo..." and then names others. So how hard would it have been on page 85, as the installation at Cerro Tololo is being described, to have said something like "The two teams using supernova observations to quantify the expansion of the universe at very high red shifts are both using data from the Blanco telescope." This would have avoided the impression made on p 85 that the SNCP was the sole discoverer, an impression certainly dispelled by the award of the Nobel Prize to members of both groups. These may seem like nitpicking observations but one would think that Trevor Lipscombe, having edited three previous books by this author, would be familiar enough with the subject matter to pick up things a knowledgeable layman would know. One interesting point to recognize is that the somewhat journalistic style of this book and its publication date of 2005 render it inevitably dated. This is particularly the case with respect to the timelines of future big telescope projects, all of which have slipped considerably since then. That is not entirely surprising considering the history of most all big engineering projects these days and one might have thought the author could have noted that a time or two.One final point I would like raise is more one of wishing the author had written a different book, given his overall knowledge. That is, I think that in the technical notes at the end of the book, he could have gone ahead and used some of the simple formulae of geometric optics to give a more complete view of why things are done the way they are. I know the author and editor were proceeding on the assumption that one formula reduces the readership by a factor of ten, surely tucked away in an appendix they do less harm and provide a more complete experience for some of the readers. Please understand my three star rating to mean that this is an interesting book I would encourage anyone with an interest in the subject to buy, particularly given the low prices at which it is available. However it is not the last word nor the only book you would want to read on the subject.

In this relatively detailed work, the author discusses the history of the telescope. This history is heavily slanted towards the past century, with much detail provided on developments in recent decades; forecasts for the foreseeable future are also presented. Although optical telescopes, and related apparatus, take center stage, radio telescopes are also discussed. A set of short notes in the back of the book provides clear and concise explanations of some of the items presented in the main text. The author writes very clearly and in an engaging style; he succeeds admirably in conveying the excitement of both furthering the technology as well as using it to deepen our knowledge in the fascinating field of astronomy. Plenty of photos and diagrams complement this excellent work. I believe that this book can be of great interest to a wide range of readers, but it will be most easily accessible to science buffs, especially those already acquainted with the basic physical principles that are central to astronomy and astronomical observation.

I came into this thinking I was going to be told some truths on how to be still and listen as God ministers. Boy, was I wrong! This was a cleverly told short story about an angry, bitter, jealous, Christian man who lost his way and was given a second chance to do things differently and in God's right way.Through his dreamlike status, God whispered to him and showed him what really matters in this life. He needed to be Grateful for the opportunity to do better. This very short story can be an eye opener. This spoke to me in so many ways and I'm in awe with the message and thankful for second, third, fourth, etc. chances given to get it right. Wake up...follow the daily instructions and listen as God whispers loudly.Yes, I recommend this very, very short story!!! [It was free from Amazon, it caught my attention, therefore I purchased it]

I read the short story in one day. I bought this book 2 years ago, I have been feeling a small tug in my heart to read this one for a day or two. It pulled me in and I just wanted to find out more. Near the end before the revelation I gasped aloud. The book definitely makes you realize the Lord could be speaking to us in ways we are unaware. This one was pretty awesome!I will definitely be recommending to friends and family.

I was born and raised in a Christian home with parents very involved in our local church, my father was the bus minister and youth minister and my mother taught a Sunday school class and Awana class. Growing up in a Christian home you always hear about God and Jesus on a daily basis. Many continue on their path with the Lord and many walk away or wander off the path God has for each of us.This book is a quick dose of reality. From the very start you are drawn into this family's life. And through the father's eyes you see how God had worked in his wifes life and his childrens lives. And then you learn how God worked in his life without him realising it.How in one quick moment, one horrible accident, how very much this families life could have changed and how God used this incident to show the father what a great life he really had and how he had always been there. How the father just wasn't listening. God was truly whispering loudly. This book moved me to tears, touched my heart and my soul and I to realize maybe I haven't been listening as closely as I should be. Great book...

Sometimes in this hurried up world we sometimes take for granted or worse yet lose sight of what is really important. Take pause and read this powerful short story and I promise your life will never be the same. The man in the story could easily be you or I. One minute driving down the road complaining about rushing to another one of the kid’s activities, your spouse’s demands, a lost promotion and the next crashing into a tree…Truly powerful but no doubt God inspired as Hibbard has an amazing way with words that capture the heart. He creates a tale that brings forth a very moving, timely message for anyone caught up in the trappings of life. Yes God whispers and He will cause us to listen even if it is loudly. Hear what God has to say to you as you read “When God Whispers Loudly” as this is one I and I guarantee you won’t soon forget.

A very inspiring story... One part I will always remember is this: “I will tell them the same message as I have been telling you for so long, I told you every day, and showed you in a thousand ways, but you were too busy to listen. How loudly must I whisper before you hear Me?” The story is about a father who was obsessed with earning money to pay for food, and shelter for his family. So obsessed, that he missed the messages that God send him. A promotion was taken away from him and he was furious with God. He was so distracted by this promotion being taken away that he ended up in an accident resulting in him being comatose for 15 years. He and his family suffered through the darkness to come into the light. Chris M. Hibbard is a very talented writer and I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

So I highlighted the following quote because it had the most meaning to me:I told you every day, and showed you in a thousand ways… How loudly must I whisper before you hear Me?Since it repeated that phrase at the end of this story I am pretty sure that quote sums up this whole book. While if only took me about 13 mins to read this book I have to say it was still a good read. How loudly? How loudly will God have to whisper until I finally hear Him? How loud until you hear Him? It's something I'm still working on.....I'm holding out for the still small whispers of my Father and praying for a heart that will heed them!

Review

2015 Newbery Medal Winner 2015 Coretta Scott King Honor Award Winner * "This novel in verse is rich in character and relationships. . . . Poet Alexander deftly reveals the power of the format to pack an emotional punch." —Kirkus, starred review * "Alexander fully captures Josh's athletic finesse and coming-of-age angst in a mix of free verse and hip-hop poetry that will have broad appeal. . . . This will inspire budding players and poets alike." —Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review * "The poems dodge and weave with the speed of a point guard driving for the basket, mixing basketball action with vocabulary-themed poems, newspaper clippings, and Josh's sincere first-person accounts that swing from moments of swagger-worth triumph to profound pain." —Publishers Weekly, starred review * "Alexander has crafted a story that vibrates with energy and heat and begs to be read aloud. A slam dunk." —School Library Journal, starred review "Concrete poems that simulate on-court action, the novel's organization into "four quarters" (plus "warm-up" and "overtime") and a smattering of their father's 10 rules of basketball--as applicable to life as they are to the game--will draw in less avid readers, and the fully-fleshed characters and Josh's spellbinding wordplay will keep all readers riveted to find out if the brothers can mend the breach in their once iron-clad bond" —Shelf Awareness "An accomplished author and poet, Alexander eloquently mashes up concrete poetry, hip-hop, a love of jazz, and a thriving family bond. The effect is poetry in motion." —Booklist "The Crossover is destined to reach—and touch—readers who never gave basketball or poetry a second thought until now. It’s tough, muscular writing about a tender, unguarded heart." —BookPage "[Alexander]'s at the top of his poetic game in this taut, complex tale of the crossover from brash, vulnerable boy to young adult." —Washington Post "Since poet Alexander has the swagger and cool confidence of a star player and the finesse of a perfectly in-control ball-handler, wordplay and alliteration roll out like hip-hop lyrics, and the use of the concrete forms and playful font changes keep things dynamic."—Horn Book Magazine "Kwame Alexander’s sizzling, heartfelt story-in-verse gives readers that rich sense of SWISH! we feel when a basketball drops perfectly through a net. Quick timing, snazzy cadence, a wealth of energy and deep affection for sports, family and life in general – it’s all here, in these gripping scenes."—Naomi Shihab Nye, National Book Award Finalist “The characters of Kwame Alexander's verse-novel entered my heart, as it showed the many ways in which the basketball, the truth, love, and life cross over and between us.” —Marilyn Nelson, Newbery Honor winning author  "The Crossover is a masterful mix of rhythm and heart that tells the story of two brothers navigating the deep waters of love, loyalty, and championship play. Alexander’s verse is fluid and electric, poignant and wise, skillfully chronicling main character Josh’s tough lessons as he comes to realize that “true champions / learn / to dance / through / the storm.” —Joyce Sidman, Newbery Honor winning author   "Bold! Explosive! Yet still gently poetic. I love The Crossover. Everyone will." —Nikki Giovanni "Kwame Alexander's cadenced basketball novel is a gem of poise and grace. His players come alive with the precision and control of an orchestrated musical composition. The poetry of the telling rings through to the heart. The Crossover  crosses over as a gift to all ages." —Ashley Bryan, Two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner

I showed this book to my gifted 4th graders and the boys who previously showed very little interest in reading immediately loved this book. They loved the dust jacket, then they took that off and loved the texture of the book cover (which is like the skin of a basketball). Thank you, Kwame Alexander, for these hooks before they even opened the book. Then they loved that it was poetry (fewer words per page..."I'm on page 32!"), and they loved the first page - maybe the best first page ever written for a boy reader. These kids were immediately sucked into the story. They loved the dynamics between the twin brothers, and the confidence of the narrator. They loved the father's pride in his son and that the father's language and taste was cheesy and dated.I can't thank the author enough for writing something that sounds so real, so relevant, so current, for boys who want to recognize themselves and their families on the page. It's not easy for an adult to write authentically for children using current language and icons that appeal to children. The boys in my group didn't know all of the basketball stars in the book - I needed to tell them who Magic Johnson was, for example - but they are a bit younger than the intended audience.

The Crossover, a Newbery Medal winner, is unusual; it’s children’s lit in the form of poetry, yet with a definite story line. It’s about a junior high school kid, Josh (a/k/a Filthy) and his parents and twin brother, Jordan (J.B.). The book centers around basketball; the twins are basketball stars, and their father was an NBA-caliber player who played briefly in Italy. Their mother is a vice principal.I'm not the intended audience for this book -- I don't particularly like basketball, I'm well past school age (by a lot), and I'm not really all that fond of poetry -- so I had reason to suspect that I might not like this book. However, I'm an omnivorous reader, and appreciate good writing of all sorts, and by the end I found that I enjoyed it a lot. I do think it’s a rather strange choice for the Newbery, although it is very creative. So it’s a very different book, but the story itself is universal. I’m glad I read it.

I read another book, IA: B.O.S.S., by a talented author, John Darryl Winston, that had some basketball content and middle-grade boy friendships that I really enjoyed. Therefore, when I came across The Crossover, it intrigued me. The talented author Kwame Alexander did not disappoint. The book contains a tight plot that encompasses family, friendship, love, health, and more. Kwame accomplishes a difficult and ambitious masterpiece by telling a story in short rhythmic verses. Kwame also does a great job capturing the essence of brotherhood between twins, Josh and Jordan Bell, mingled with the complicated dynamics of being in junior high (Jordan falls in love with Sweet Tea, and Josh wants a sip.). This is a great book for junior high kids and older. It's an easy read with a touching story. I also love the difficult vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book.

Kwame Alexander's THE CROSSOVER (2014) is not a stereotypical basketball story. Rather, it is a universal story with educated, black characters of growing up, of family, and of love told in narrative verse (poetry). Having said that, Alexander does tackle some contemporary issues of black life: of driving while black, of the consequences for black men who do not regulate their temper, of poor diet and not seeking medical treatment. At its core, though, the story is about the love between twin brothers who think they are drifting apart as they go through puberty and the role that basketball plays in healing them through their obstacles. THE CROSSOVER is an engaging, emotional read that is ideal for those who love poetry, basketball, or may be reluctant readers.

I admit that I initially got this book because of two factors: one is that the author is a Virginia resident and the second is that the Kindle price was incredibly cheap, something that was likely done because the book won a Newbery Award. It's not a particularly long novel, but it's short length works in its favor because this is an exceedingly powerful book. The entire work is told in verse and it's beautifully done, as Alexander takes full advantage of the format to craft visually lovely free verse that truly leaps off the page. It's a book that's very much meant to be viewed, although part of me is curious to listen to the audiobook so I can experience how the narrator interpreted various portions of the book. What ultimately works best here is that the characters are all believable and best of all, there are no "bad guys" here. Even though we're really only given the perspective of one of the two brothers, it will be very easy for readers of all ages to interpret how either brother is feeling at almost any given point of the book- an element that I'm sure is going to be the focus of many, many school lectures.I can easily see this book becoming a staple of multiple classrooms and for good reason. It's amazingly well crafted and even better- it's fiction that will appeal to any age and any gender. This book deals with a lot of difficult topics, from growing up to family issues to various different things that just about every child will deal with when they're young and I whole heartedly recommend that parents read this book as well and discuss it with their children and heck, maybe even make up a few verses for themselves.

As a former librarian, I wonder what books children and young adults will read and enjoy. As the mother of a 13-year-old, I wonder what books will pull him away from his computer games. I believe that The Crossover by Keane Alexander is such a book. It is full of action and contemporary references, as well as realistic family dynamics. The poetry filled the book with movement and song; it is almost as if it gave flesh to the book. I wish there were more books with male protagonists like this in this age group. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to share it with my son.
