Although both offer general information about gear, basic moves, safety, competitions, and competitors, Brown's book, part of the X-treme Outdoors series, is strongest in its coverage of the sport's history and in its list of resources. Herran and Thomas' book, in the Action Sports series, is more attractive, with a picture-book format and appealing photos and diagrams. It gives a fuller explanation of the gear--how boards are made and maintained, for example--and includes several pages of biographical information on champion snowboarders. Both books could have covered safety issues more thoroughly; few riders are pictured in helmets, and in Herran and Thomas' title, a photo pictures a snowboarder wearing a Hawaiian shirt instead of the warm, waterproof gear recommended in the text. But each title offers curious middle-graders a somewhat different glimpse of the sport. Cindy Kleh's excellent Snowboarding Skills [BKL De 15 02] is a more comprehensive guide.
